This is how to disable the clutch safety switch on a 98 Jeep TJ Sahara. Mayy or may not work on other years of TJ and non Sahara models. This is how Jeep intended for you to disable the clutch safety switch and is covered in your owner's manual.

Dude, this saved me, I was stranded on the freeway and needed to get the Jeep out of harms way. I was looking for the clutch safety switch in the later models location to bypass it and of course it wasn’t there (I could only find videos of these later years). Anyway, I was able to scoot it off the freeway as an off ramp was near by. Your video is a savior.

I have owned 10 Jeeps; most of them TJ's. I currently have an LJ, which is the extended version of a TJ. I never knew about the clutch switch bypass with the fuse. Very good clear explanation. Thanks so much. Keep the Jeep vids coming.

Didn't work for me ...I have a 97 TJ Sport and I have to push the clutch to the floor and finesse it to get it to start so I was looking forward to this shortcut, bought new 20 amp fuses, replaced the 5 amp fuse that was in slot #20 and put the 20 amp in it.....nothing. tried a few more fuses In other places ... still nothing. I don't imagine our Jeeps are that dissimilar being one year apart in age.....so off to the Haynes manual I go.

You had me at "I suck". Nicely done. I learned how to do this on a buddy's YJ ages ago but needed to know how it worked on a TJ so thanks for the help and self deprecation. Cracked me up.

So what if you disable that feature and you go to start your Jeep and its in gear? Bye bye garage?

The purpose is specifically to start it while in gear. It can be used to crawl slower over obstacles while offroading using the starter. You just have to be mindful of your modification after the fact. I personally never park my jeep in in gear while in the garage and never start it with the door closed. But if I were too. It's as easy as just letting off the starter once I notice it start to lurch or stand on the clutch and brake before it gets any real momentum.

If it miraculously started the Jeep instantaneously after the first jump forward, I think you would be close enough to the emergency brake to give it a pull.
