Jeep TJ gets an 8" console Subwoofer

I remove the stock 6.5" subwoofer, Amp and box form the console of my LJ and replace it with something a little....Bigger! 8" Kicker sub with shallow mount box and Kicker aftermarket Amp!!!
NOTE: The original parts have been discontinued..I have UPDATED the parts list below:

Came back to this video to see what Amp I bought 2 years ago (evidently, time flies)... I did this exact setup, and it sounds great. EVEN with the top and doors off! Sound REALLY good with the whole Jeep closed up.

This is a great install - thanks for sharing. My 06 didn't come with the factory sub (I had an 05 before that did). I'm going to take the console out and see if I can make something similar work. Thanks for the inspiration!

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! I didn't know what to do about a subwoofer in my TJ, until I saw your video. I did this set up very similar to yours and it sounds amazing! I had an added challenge because I have Corbeau XRS Baja seats, and the are huge & take up way more room than the stock seats, which takes it to the next level of difficulty, but I got it done anyway. thanks again bud!

Okay... 2 years later... but this awesome. Think I'm going to try this with my '97 because I'm looking for a console sub ... which the '97-'02 didn't have since it wasn't an option. Thanks for the idea of the Pioneer box, and the kicker amp.

Im in the same process!! Got my 06 TJ running like a champ. Now it’s time for lights and sound system upgrade. Then lift and wheels and tires, I will try to make a video soon? It’s silver also! Going with SKAR AUDIO all the way! I’ll keep in touch!! Nice informative video. Thanks for sharing!

Nice ... I was thinking of either fiberglassing the inside of the console or do a box like that ... I think I'll try the box ... seems a lot easier!

Great idea but a little to late for me just installed a kenwood double din with 1000 watt amp behind the seat with the kicker 10" sub in the back I took my back seat out so plenty of room..5.25's in front and in the sound bar..kickers...nice mach 1 by the way I have the 03 cobra black love it!

I put all new kicker entry level 5.25” with pods in the dash and 6.5” in the sound bar and was hoping it would sound good. Needs more mid bass terribly. My console doesn’t have a provision for a sub but am thinking about just building a box and making one side tight to the console so I can cut a hole in it and have the sub with a grille sandwich the console if that makes since.

Sound matt all on the inside on my center console. Cut a hole for the sub and one for air vent. Look and works fine. 20$ something for everything.

How did you get rid of the oem amplifier and adapt the new amp to the wiring from the radio. My 2004 rubicon sub stopped working and looking to do something similar

It’s wired in series which is raising the impedance from .5 to 2 ohms. It’s a dual one ohm so either parallel it to .5 or series makes it 2 ohms. I like how he said “doubling the power” which is totally the opposite, he’s doubling the impedance which makes the amp/sub use and take less power. Idk if his amp could handle .5 ohms without going into protect. Most amps won’t unless they’re top of the line. 2 ohms on a kicker 8 is fine, hopefully he’ll be getting 200 or so watts to the sub.

Hello. Thanks for the vid. I just bought a 2001 Jeep Wrangler Sport and know nothing about them. It has a factory radio w/cd. It also has the sub in the console that does not work. I am going to purchase all new speakers and a sub that I will put in the center console like you did in this vid. I am also gonna purchase a new head unit and 5 channel or 4 channel w/sub amp to power everything. If anyone has any suggestions, I am open to hear them all.

I would definitely put some dynomat inside that console and on the floor underneath the carpet so it doesn't sound as bad less rattling

Maybe I missed something (which is likely lol) but that was a dual 1 ohm? I thought you wired it in parallel down to .5 instead of series to 2 ohms. Does the amp get hot under there? I also have a Jeep and going with 3 8inch ct sounds tropos. Two in rear one in console and I used kenwood mods and highs with alpine and kicker amps. But thanks for the vid!!! Much appreciated

Hey, is that new slim box link to the Alphasonik for just the box? I haven't heard of that brand before so am not sure if I want to replace the sub that comes with the enclosure and follow your vid with the kicker wiring as you did. If you do just use that subwoofer from them, do you use the same amp and leave the wiring as it comes?

UPDATE 2/2023 I have UPDATED the parts list. It's all pretty similar but I haven't tried to ensure it fits. If anyone confirms new parts list is good to go please let me know.

I just found your channel today. I have a silver 05 LJ that I have done a lot of interior work to as well. I mounted a powered sub onto the tailgate but I’m afraid it’s going to get in the way since I want to add some drawers and a fridge for camping. I might do something similar to your setup. My LJ did not not come with the factory sub so this setup should be a good alternative. Are you going to do this to the rubicon? Thanks!

Ryan Thurm what is it you’re looking for!? Battery cable to amp. Ground to amp. Remote wire from radio to amp. Speaker wire to amp if you’re gonna bridge you use the power wire from one channel on the amp and the negative from the other channel. Then connect those wires to the positive/negative on the box.

Big STEW For less than 300w 10gauge is ok but I went 8 gauge just to be safe

Awesome man. Is that a TJ or an LJ? I so want to do this to my TJ as no sub = no bass. Problem is, mine didn't come with that center console, so am looking for one online. Do you run 4x6 or 4 or 5.25 for the front speakers?

I was getting ready to do a copy your install here, but going back through the comments you stated what looks like shortly after doing this mod you moved the 8in to your car and went back to the OEM enclosure with a Kicker 6.75. Why? And did you leave it that way or switch back later? Just wondering of the 8in is worth it for the extra cost/work after you hear the real life comparison of the two?

I never knew the TJ's had a subwoofer in the console, the previous owner must have taken it out which explains why my center console is extremely deep, my only question is, Does it vibrate really bad? that wouldn't be very comfortable to rest my arm on something that shakes too much and causes a bunch more noise that the tj already has

The stock box Won't let you put a large subwoofer like this due to the magnet being so large on speaker

A 800 w kicker amp isn’t even 1 ohm stable so he’s doin the right thing. Shoulda fit two 8’s somehow lol then run em at 1 ohm and hope the amp handles it. They’d suck the power up

Nocturnal Performance oh wow thanks for the quick reply. I’m debating between this and a Rockville SS8P 400w 8" Slim Under-Seat Active Powered Car/Truck Subwoofer Sub. It’s got 400W and 100 rms, not sure if it’ll even make a difference with the top down. What are your thoughts? It’s like 120 for the sub wires and everything. One thing I’m worried about with getting a sub and amp is if it rains and I forget to close the top.. appreciate your quick response btw!

Too much work to do what you did and ruining your console's interior space. I just swapped in the Kicker 6.5 sub and powered it with an amp it's more than enough.

603dirtbikerr What do you mean? Have you seen any of my other videos....”Dude has TWO LJs” and yes I know it. But technically thier called TJ Unlimited. But on my videos that pertain to Both a TJ and am LJ I just label them TJ.
