Jeep Wrangler Catches Fire & Burns - Overland Car Camping Trip Goes Wrong - Ends in Disaster
My most recentJeep Overland Car Camping trip ended in disaster when my Jeep Wrangler JKU Rubicon caught fire and burned to the ground. I was 30 miles from pavement in some of the most remote desert in Oregon. I still have no idea what caused the Jeep to catch on fire but it burned to the ground.
This video covers the whole trip. It began like any other car camping overland trip I set out on in the Jeep. The first part of the video covers the trails I was following and some of the cool historic sites I explored. The second part of the video covers pretty much the whole series of events when my Jeep caught on fire right through to then end when it was burned to a crisp.
Hope you all enjoy!
Best Always
Casey

Cody King Fine, you have a point. It is most definitely possible that his car DID catch fire on its own, and he just kept calm the entire time. I was on a paved Montana road heading home when dark smoke started pouring from the louvers of my 1973 Toyota Landcruiser. I came to a stop and the smoke developed into fire. I remembered my aircraft engine training regarding ground fire. One technique is to keep the engine running and blow the fire out with the prop wash. I was able to do this using my cooling fan. The fire was caused by a leaking oil hose that spurted on to the hot exhaust manifold. The cruiser had external oil lines.

@@billyjeanvogul7770 On propeller driven aircraft experiencing an engine fire while starting, it is recommended to keep the engine turning. This using the high speed air to force out the fire. Like blowing out the candles on a birthday cake. So if your engine is equipped with a belt driven fan you can throttle up to blow out the fire. My current V8 has electric fans so now I carry a fire extinguisher.

Yeah but that shouldn't have kept burning unless he had a fuel leak somewhere. That's the only thing I can think of that would keep the fire going after an extinguisher and 2 bottles of water, fuel was leaking against the hot exhaust and re-igniting itself. Most of the fuel lines under the car are metal, there might have been a part of it up by the engine that was rubber that wore out, or even chewed through by a small animal. Really good to have solid splash and skid shields with a little custom under-body work on off-road vehicles to keep water and critters out, even if you're not planning on putting a snorkel on it, it should be damn near air tight.

Personal recommendation: This was a once in a lifetime event, but I always carry a GoPro, just in case things get interesting. Those things last like, 2-4 hours a battery, and a trio of batteries are easy to store with the small camera. Also, I carry a head-mount attached tot he GoPro at all times, so I can slap it on my head, record, and return to the event/emergency, yet still get the footage. This is also useful for various legal reasons, like entering a strangers burning home to rescue someone, ect.
