Jeep Wrangler TJ - Rough Idle/Vapor Lock (Heat Soak) CHEAP FIX

If your 2000-2001 Jeep 4.0 engine has problems in the heat and it idles rough or hesitates, it is most likely a heat soak related issue.
Supposedly there was a recall for the 4.0's from 2000-2001 because the exhaust manifold gave off so much heat that it was vaporizing injector 3 and causing a misfire, which leads to rough idle, hesitation, and poor performance. If you ever run your Jeep for a while, park it in a parking lot, come back out, start it up and it runs rough, that is heat soak. After cooling down for 20 or so minutes, it may go away. This method will prevent that rough idle from ever happening.
The fix for this is relatively simple, cheap, and effective. There are several ways to fix this problem, but for me I bought a $50 heat shield kit from Amazon which completely removed the issue for me. Another excellent option is having a hood louver as it allows heat to escape quicker, however for me, I needed the heat shield as well.

I applaud you for tackling this job on your own. a couple of tips that might prove helpful in the future... always stuff a rag down the intake when u remove the throttle body. second tip is to spray some penetrating oil on rusted looking bolts (ie. anything near the exhaust) the night before, pb blaster or liquid wrench works well. another trick I used on bolts I suspect are gonna be a bitch is to compression shock them lightly, after they have soaked all night or as long as u can leave it then try to loosen bolt working it back and forth little by little.... hope this helps next time

Nice video man, appreciate the heads up on this. Where I live in CA it gets well over 100 degrees in the summer so I might need this too. I didn't end up getting a TJ but I bought an LJ a few days ago and it has the same motor.

Nice! The heat shield that was on mine was Jeep's attempt at the recall (the gross one I removed in the video), but it wasn't enough. The hood louver really helps too. Good luck with the LJ. Those are sick!

Just wanted to say I love the videos and keep up the great work! Also wanted to say that I noticed where your bolt snapped that you can see where it was rusted together at the top of the post it bolted into. The best thing to avoid this in the future is a can of PB Blaster. Spay a little on any bolt that might be seized from rust and let sit for 5mins(longer it sits better it works) and you usually dont have that problem unless it's too far gone lol.

I added a hood louvre back in 2019. It helped a bit. Then I wrapped fuel lines and cut up another DEI product to wrap the rail and injectors. I don’t get codes anymore but it didn’t solve my issue. Mine still runs rough for a time if it’s above 90° and I stop for a while without raising the hood. I bought a similar kit. The manifold heat shield is flat without contours like yours. I’m about to install mine but I think I will pull the fuel rail so I can clean everything and replace the O-rings, I’m about to turn over 100K miles.

How is the update on the product besides the sheet that goes on the manifold, I was reading the amazon reviews that it makes it worse? I have this problem with my 1996 TJ. If i've been running it for a while it won't start up again for about half an hour. I'll probably get one of these kits but i'd love to know why this is happening because it never use to be an issue. Do you think changing the injectors would help?
@ArkansasOffroad
@ArkansasOffroad 5 жыл бұрын
I doubt that would do anything. Your exhaust manifold is vaporizing the fuel in your injectors. Most likely cylinder 3. Replacing it wouldn't do anything. The hood louver + the shield kit fixed it up for me. You maybe could just do the shield kit and get away with it.

This doesnt work that great and you will have this issue despite the protection because is not enough and heat still soaks the fuel rail and injectors. Bottom line it was pretty stupid to have both manifolds on the same side....I can only imagine how bad it is for a carburetor on the 4.2. This engines were very long in the tooth and they still pushed them for another 7 years. People argue this engines are reliable but why wouldn't they be if they are a detuned motor only producing 190 tops....pretty ridiculous. If you have pre 2000 models you got fucked twice because you will have a distributor to fuck with along with other goodies like a bad alternator (sub 100amps...laughable) also the exhaust manifolds on the older models were total trash and used to crack like a mother.... ...anyways happy wheeling 2003 jeep 4.0
