Jeep Wrangler YJ - 135 amp alternator upgrade. Using an alternator from a 1998 Dodge Durango, I up the amps in my Wrangler to prepare for future light and sound upgrades. Hmmm .. possible a wench in the future also.

I ordered a rebuilt 136amp alt for a 1998 Durango off eBay and it was exactly as you described. It goes on my 1993 YJ. My original alt had a frozen bearing so the replacement was a go. The rebuilt was less expensive then braving the cold at the junk yard for a 20 year old used one. Was delivered in 3 days at a cost of $83.20 with free shipping. Great Video- Thanks ! I was about to replace my ‘95 YJ Alternator, but I will re-examine the cables & regulator first. Great camera images too man ! That really helped to illustrate exact locations of bolts (AND you indicated each of the bolts’ sizes !) Very helpful info !!

Using your videos all the time, finally time to say your freaking awesome! Thanks!!!!! Love the 93 yj can't wait to start driving mine. After the motor swap, and all P and M, and gaskets done to the Motor. Lift kit, light bars, carpets, welded in leather seats from a grand Cherokee limited edition. New door handles and installation of all needed parts for them to work. Hope driving her will be as much fun as getting her ready for a night on the town....

solid idea!!! I was having issues with my standard 90 app stock alternator with my L.e.d bar on and the heater running it would all but kill my battery!!! I took a 135 app out of a 03 ram 1500 fit like a charm and killed my voltage drop....you my friend are the man and I am grateful for all your info!!

Then you do wanna upgrade the charging wire. If the alternator has to push lots of juice to the battery due to lighting, wench or a boomin system. The factory charge wire cant handle the amperage the upgraded alternator can throw out. Therefor hot wire equals melted insulation .. melted insulation equals at best an electrical short shutting things down .. or .. at worst your Jeep harness catches on fire. Upgraded from 61amp to 100 amp and it was a huge upgrade but im installing many electronic upgrades from a amazing sound system to an led light bar so im upgrading to 200 amp one i get money saved

Great info! I've wanted to do this swap and I know how to do it, just haven't gotten around to it yet. Nice to see a video at least. As for the motor mount bolt, upgrade to Brown Dog, reverse the bolt, and never look back ;)

Hey man, love your videos. I was curious, did you run that red wire to the negative or positive side of the battery? I’m assuming positive because it’s a red wire but my Jeep has the positive on the left side of the battery as opposed to the right

Wonderful information BUT, how can you know what higher amperage output alternator cross references with the one you're replacing? In other words, If I want to get a higher amperage alternator, how do I know what alternator to look for and what it comes off of?

Just got done installing a reconditioned 136 amp alt. Everything went fine except the power steering adj. was really stiff. Question: What did you do with the wire that ran into the PDC from the stock alt.? Did you just pull the two 50amp fuses or did you pull the wire out or left it as is.

Hey Chuck, I’m thinking of doing the swap to my yj(hopefully those Durango alternators fit on the 4.2 engines). Have you have had to swap the alternator? Or is it still running strong? Also have you had issues running with the 7 rib pulley?

That same alternator is still going strong. No issues at all. The 7 rib pulley works fine with my 6 rib belt. Just gotta make sure its put on the back 6 ribs to properly align with the rest of the pulleys. Have a great day!

Thanks for the great video, I like the re route of the new heavier charge cable! That will take most of the voltage draw off the 50 amp fuse in the Power distribution box [which was probably one of your Original problems, I know this from chasing voltage probs on my 91yj !] Note: DO NOT put a higher rated fuse in the box! you will fry and burn the spade connectors in there! I made this mistake to get home one night running my KCs! Good job with the new fuse protection on the charge cable !!!

The original charge wire should be replaced completely. No part of the original circuit can handle the power that alternator can put out if it went into full amp push from internally shorting out. Thanks for dropping in suggestions to help everyone out! Have a great day!!

How is everything with the alternator upgrade? Any issues like electrical problems overheating since the install? Did you have to put any other grounds, and also something i might have missed did you have to cut and put any other connectors from the existing factory wires to put on the battery?

Sorry about the slow responce, KZfaq comments didnt alert me you left this. I just happen to notice it while answering another comment. I've had no issues at all. There is no reason for it to overheat. Alternators don't put out their full rated amps until its needed. I didn't install any extra grounds, but it doesn't hurt to add extra grounds whether you are upgrading alternators or not. Bad grounds are the most common cause for weird electrical issues. The most important things about this upgrade is to be sure you install a larger charging wire going from the charging post of the alternator to the positive post of the battery with an inline fuse rated one step above the rated output of the alternator. Curious about the charging cable. Is it advisable to make the same modifications or should I be ok with running the alternator the way it is

Being that you didnt say that you did or didn't upgrade alternators. If you upgraded the alternator to the 135. You really should upgrade the charging cable also. The 135 is capable of lots more power then the factory charge wire can handle. If you are still running the stock alternator, the charge wire will probably be fine. But, upgrading the wire may be a bit of a bonus even with a stock alternator. This is because it will help eliminate any voltage drop that may be occurring in the factory harness. Hope this helps. Did this cause any engine lights to appear on the dash? And did the voltage gauge on the dash work afterwards?considering they have internal regulators

Awesome vid again ! Have a question for ya. I have a 95 YJ as well, and recently the the Rpms have been dropping while the clutch is held in an in gear while at stop lights. Would love an idea of what it may be so I could at least save accordingly before I take it in to a shop.

Starts at 900 too 1000. When it happens it will drop it too about 300-400, some times, just stall out.

Here is my sensor play list. kzfaq.info/sun/PL8Fz_3RM9QXaZNgPN5efC7MD5puBqrfaW . Test the Throttle position sensor first. Then the MAP sensor. Then .. unfortunately I haven't made a video for it yet, check the Idle Air Control Valve which is connected to the the throttle body. Possible low fuel pressure at idle. So see my testing fuel pressure video. There are a few things that could cause what you are experiencing.

I do like your videos! it helps me so much, actually i have YJ 1994 4L , and i changed radiator fan to electrical one to gain extra horsepower + to make AC working better in summer, now it consuming around 70 amp(monster GMC fan)! , and my total consumption is about 80 amp, the alternator work fine with no battery dropp, but i am thinking to replace it with bigger one just like you did!

Glad my video help you, lets me know I'm on the right track with my channel. If you are pulling that many amps, no doubt time for an upgrade! Its an easy swap with huge payback. Most importantly .. be sure to upgrade the charge wire. Install a larger gauge with a fuse rated just next step above the rated output of the alternator. Run the charge wire from the charging post of the alternator straight to the positive battery post. Good luck on the swap. Thanks for all your videos, they've been very informative and I've done a couple of these mods myself after viewing! I always love to see what other YJ owners are doing to their rigs.. In regards to the alternator, have you had any issues with the 7 spline pulley even though the belt is 6 spline? I imaging the tension keeps it in the grooves well enough, just thought I'd check now that you've had it in for a while. I'm adding lights and eventually want to add an audio amp, and the refurbished alternators fitted for the YJ seem to max out at 117 amps, I'd like to try the Dodge for the extra 20ish amps. Thanks again!

You're welcome and glad the videos are helping you! I agree the YJs is such an easy platform to mod. As for the 7 groove pully. I've had no issues all. The trick is to just make sure the grooves line up with the rest of the system keeping the belt running straight. I've got some audio equipment I just haven't gotten around to installing yet. Mostly because I want to first swap my roll bar for the family style, then make a custom sound bar. I've got some ideas for fiberglass videos coming about early summer. do you know if the original alternator is the same as an XJ with Renix engine? it looks the same to me. i would like an upgrade for mine tho. i think mine has the 90 amp unit

ok I have did all that have done on my 95 wrangler and still only putting out between 12 and a little under 13 volts. now is there a governor on ecu that prevents nothing more than that? another thing the two little screws read differently are they suppose to? one is exactly what the alternator says, the other is 2to 4 volts less. please help.

The ECU just makes sure the voltage doesnt get too high. Too low could be a weak alternator. Check the voltage while running at the big post, good voltage will be ~14volts. Then, turn on headlights and radio then check the voltage at the big post. There may be a bit of voltage drop but shouldn't be much. With lights and radio off, If you are getting ~14 volts at the post and less at the battery terminal. You have a bad connection from the alternator to the battery for the charge wire. If you upgraded alternators like in this video, upgrade that charge wire like I demo'ed. It will cook the stock wire. The 2 small posts just indicate the ECM is doing its job at sending voltage to turn the alternator on. If you arent getting voltage there, ECU or wiring is bad, otherwise dont sweat that.

Electrically will it work, yes it should. I haven't tried bolting one to a 4cyl so that I cant confirm. Call the autoparts store and check the part number for a 6 cyl and a 4 cyl. If they are the same part number, bolting one in shouldn't be an issue. Robert Gerace - sorry I didnt reply sooner. KZfaq comment alerts isnt always very dependable.

I would get one out of a Cherokee XJ from a scrap yard. The yards around here have no Wranglers but plenty of Cherokees. The YJs and XJs share a lot of parts. That would be the easiest to find. Good luck! Have a great day!

I answered in one of your other comments, the only thing that provides tension is the power steering pump. There is a bolt under the power steering pump that loosens and tightens the belt.
