When I installed the used Rustys Off Road 3" lift on my xj a couple years ago, I had some significant death wobble that was the result of worn control arm bushings and miss-adjusted tow in. Lately, the problem has resurfaced because of worn track bar bushings. Special thanks to Patrons- DizTraveler, Anonymous and bryan_2009. Thank you for your support!

I've had about 4 jeeps in my life and never experienced this but only once. on my 4x4 99 jeep grand cherokee. It was scary af when I first experiednced it but also because of all the videos on line talking about this illusive experience I knew exactly what was happening. Death wobble is also the perfect name for it lmao. I currently have a 96 and 97 Grand Cherokee and neither have had this issue even though they do have their own suspension issues no doubt due to worn out parts.

After installing a Zone Offroad 3" lift on my 95 XJ, I noticed I had more tire poke on one side than the other. I opted for a "sleeve" adjustable track bar that I purchased from my local off road shop for a screaming price (better than Amazon) came with a new bracket for the frame side. Can't remember the brand but I do mention it in one for my videos (Project Bumble Jeep channel)

A trick I've used when installing a bushing with a bench vice is to put as much pressure as possible with the vice, then hit the front jaw with a large hammer, then repeat as necessary.

My experience with death wobble over the years zj xj tj what ever first thing to check is the track bar almost always is the cause of death wobble there is other things but if your track bar is loose or bad ball joints sooner or later bad death wobble

Owned 4 jeeps, all wranglers, even at stock level I have had death wobble... In my 06 wrangler a mechanic at my Jeep dealership said everything looked good, then he asked if I had ever had my wheels balanced... after they balanced them it stopped the wobble, this has happened several times with the same results... Lucky it hasn't been anything more serious, but I have to do this about once a year

As handy as the BFH is, and they are handy AF, a ball joint press is a pretty good alternative to a hydraulic press. They take up little space, they are very portable and i find that mine does a lot of things my hydraulic press was bought to do. Got to have a good one though.

I see you have a shirt that says Colorado I sure wish you lived in Colorado I’ve been watching your videos for a while and I haven’t picked up on that but because of you I bought my first jeep because I figured it be a good thing to learn how to work on cars seeing how I build houses and a dad that was never there but a lifetime mechanic who taught me no mechanic skills so I’m a very late starter in the Mechanic world but I have changed my radiator a tirod end and a couple other little things but I am struggling with this death wobble I have a six-year-old little girl I’m a single father and it scares me so much I don’t even drive above 45 miles an hour anymore which means it takes me almost twice as long to do most trips but anyhow if you’d be interested in helping younger guy out maybe I can help you out on a home project! I went to get an alignment after I did the tire rod end and the big O tires people told me I had play in my wheel bearings so I changed both my front wheel hubs and bearing assembly is completely to brand new ones but I have less severe death wobble since the tire rod end was put in and the wheel hubs were changed do you think an alignment could be all I need left it’s still does the death wobble though

what kind of jeep? if your jeep is stock the only adjustment it the front end is a little bit in the lower control arm, which will change castor. Usually this doesn't need to be messed with. The toe in will induce death wobble. you should have 0 to 1/16" toe in, meaning the front of the tire is pointed inward. I did mine by taking a measurement off one of the treads, near the center of the tire, both at the front and the back of the tire, to the same locations on the other side of the vehicle. if that makes sense. Check all your suspension bushings and make sure everything is tight. make sure your shocks aren't dickered and your ball joints are good. Sorry I don't live in CO, never did. My wife got that shirt for me on one of her business trips.

Do you know what might cause the front right side to ride lower than the other sides? Im having some steering issues. The jeep is kind of all over the road when trying to go straight. I adjusted the steering box and that did help alot. I even got all new tires so that they are all matching. The only things I was going to try next is a coil spring and alignment.

So my xj with a 3.5 inch lift should not have a stock track bar? I’ve replaced the some of the front end, tie rod ends, tie rod, steering stabilizer, track bar, sway bar, sway bar linkage and all the bushings only a year ago and death wobble is back BAD.

if you're using the stock track bar, the axle likely isn't centered. check your toe-in

What would you suggest if the bolt on the passenger side keeps coming loose, it's happened 3 times now with me. The last bolt I put on has a locking mechanism to it. But still came loose. Just took longer this time. Lol. Appreciate the video! I'm having someone come over tomorrow to help me figure this out more.

We race these XJs and I can tell you, switching to a Heims Joint on both ends is the best way to solve any "Death Wobble". The rubber bushings you installed will wear out again and again, the Heims is not going to wear out under normal off roading.
@ZeSneakyNinja
@ZeSneakyNinja 2 жыл бұрын
Even out here in Florida with the sand and mud? I ask because I've been hesitant going heims on my XJ since I don't really want to be replacing joints every 10k miles like I've heard people complain about.

That's funny because heim joints are known for wearing out quicker, especially on a daily driver.

I can only cringe thinking what the steering would be like going down the road 70mph with the death wobble attacking the steering mechanism out of the blue. Immediate wreck possibly killing, or hurting very badly, the occupants due to not being able to hang onto the steering wheel I would imagine. I'm sure glad I don't own a 4wheel drive vehicle! Great video and a lot of good information, Rick! Kudos! Stay safe.

Its amazing how many shops dont have a press. I remember back in the day driving around my whole town lookin for just 1 shop with a freakin press. Took me days but I finally found 1. After that stuggle I just ended up buying my own for like 120 bucks from harbor freight. Yes they take up space and you never really use them. but when you do, you need it asap lol.

I just purchased a 2001 XJ driving it home I experienced the DW I couldn’t believe how dangerous it was, once it happened it did it over and over. I know now I can’t drive it until I take care of this damn DW. I’ve been a Martinbuilt subscriber for several yrs now. My concern is, now that I’ve had the DW how much of all the joints have I damaged due to it.
@dzlfreek
@dzlfreek 2 жыл бұрын
Likely cause is suspension bushings and worn out steering components. DW can cause catastrophic damage if the DW is sustained...it can literally shake the truck apart. my guess is the joints are already bad, thats why you have DW.
