JKD has a heavy emphasis on footwork. This video will showcase lots of important types of footwork within JKD. The first thing to keep in mind is your stance - knees slightly bent and back heel up. This allows powerful push shuffles from the back foot, complemented by fencing-like footwork for precise movement which makes it easier to come in and out.
Mix it up with the step and slide basics: forward, back, left, right. Master the art of distance control to land more strikes and stay safer in the process. Whether driving straight in or curving out, adapt your footwork to create openings.
Another essential motion is the slide step back, safeguarding your lead leg from danger. Use the slide step forward to deliver kicks, close the distance, and seamlessly transition into combos.
The snap away adds the element of half beat. By executing a push shuffle back, you set up counterattacks like the cross hook.
As mentioned above, distance control is vital. Footwork, along with drills like the mirror drill, enables you to monitor and invade your opponent's space. Think of the mirror drill as focus mitts without the striking.
Snap away with various techniques: straight lead, curve step, cross roll under, or rear straight. Employ the corkscrew, stepping away with a jab. Remember, footwork intertwines with punches and kicks, forming a cohesive whole.
Flow and fluidity are essential. Avoid robotic, jerky motions by practicing your footwork every day. Attack while in motion, combining head movement with footwork for enhanced effectiveness.
The rocker shuffle helps you find balance and agility in your stance. Advanced motions like the Demado shift, a slide step to the side, are a great way to get an angle.
All forward motion relies on three base motions: step, push, and slide. Step forward, push forward, and slide forward. The same applies to stepping, pushing, and sliding back.
Footwork is the cornerstone of fighting skills, whether striking, wrestling, or armed combat. Watch the dirty fighting video to witness the importance of footwork, even in a self defense situation. Basic footwork lays the foundation for mastery.

Sifu, James. Major kudos on your videos and excellent, clear instruction. Your angling footwork (curve right and drop step) leave me with one small question as I try to reconcile (for example) initiating the curve right with a hook or uppercut. My understanding (in boxing) is that these punches derive their power from the weight shift from lead to rear leg. It seems that pushing forward would result in a weight shift to lead leg which seems to conflict with requirements of the hook and uppercut. Am I missing a subtle aspect of this technique? Thanks for any clarity you can provide.

Great question. We’ll make a video detailing more footwork while throwing punches (hooks and uppercuts mostly). Weight transfer will be a major topic of that video In a curve step with a hook yes the weight moves to lead leg but the hook still has a lot of power. By moving this way it’s a different body mechanic vs a stationary hook. The curve step combine with turning your hip last second creates the force. The angle keeps you safer than moving straight in. Hope this provides clarity but we’re also dropping a video soon that shows more details on moving with the hook. Thanks for watching!

Our head instructor is certified under Ted Wong who did the most one on one lessons with Bruce Lee. He’s also certified under Sifu Chris Kent. Sifu Chris is under Dan Inosanto. So we actually have two linages back to Bruce Lee. 👍💪

How do you push shuffle forward with the rear uppercut? Is it even possible?
@NYMartialArtsAcademy
@NYMartialArtsAcademy Жыл бұрын
Usually not a good idea. You can get countered very easily advancing with a rear uppercut. Typical counter is a hook vs a rear uppercut with the step or push shuffle. Even a looping wide uppercut can be countered with a tight hook in the pocket.
