I'm always up for a Kenny Vaughan interview. I appreciate not just his stories which are always entertaining, but also his view and opinions on music. I'm going to try and hunt up that Yardbirds on the Shindig video to see what Kenny was talking about. Edit: I just watched the video. Kenny was right. Beck was incredible, a real gunslinger. At the end he holds the guitar upright in his left hand, all the while playing it just doing hammer-ons with the fingers of his left hand while he grabs the slide. And this was in 1965.

I had the same reaction to those Yardbirds things when I was a junior and senior in HS. He was like nobody else at all. Even Hendrix wasn't that much of a shock after having heard Beck for two years.

Thank Otis and Kenny for bringing up his earlier 60s stuff. Lots of talk about the later music, which I love, but the Yardbirds period is so special to me. Love those songs so much

Kenny Vaughan, one of my favorite musicians on the planet, talking about Jeff Beck, the man who inspired me to never stop reaching for new heights in my musicianship? Yes, please! These stories are great, and hearing them told by Kenny is just plain dreamy (dreamy? Yeah, I know, but danged if it doesn't apply perfectly 😄).

McCartney's Taxman riff as a nod to Jeff. Makes perfect sense. Beck taught us it's ok to get harmonics on frets that don't normally have one.

True story. A childhood friend of mine was hanging with another well known musician who he'd hooked up with somehow in an LA studio. He and another friend left and hailed a cab, he here's a dude with a British accent asking where they were going, and could he share a ride as he was heading in the same direction. The dude jumps in with a cigarette in his mouth and my buddy without missing a beat snatches the cigarette out of his mouth and flings it out the window, saying no smoking in the cab. The dude looks at him and says "But it was just a clove cig, mate". Yep, none other than Jeff Beck.

I was 14 when I watched The Yardbirds tear ABC's "Shindig" a new one, which Kenny describes so well here. A year later The Yardbirds actually played Lima, Ohio's Springbrook Gardens Teen Club on Dec. 4, 1966 (you can Google the show poster), a venue just 20 miles east of our family farm. I thought I was gonna see both Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page that night, but found out Beck had returned to London after becoming upset with the conditions on their U.S. tour. What I didn't know until 50 years later watching KZfaq interviews was that 19 year-old NYC native Elliott Randall (then a guitar teacher at Lima's Custom Percussion Music Store) also attended that show and introduced himself to Jimmy Page. Less than 6 years later in the the summer of 1972, Randall would compose and play the lead guitar solos on Steely Dan's "Reelin' In the Years" -- solos which Page in 1973 famously rated "12 on a scale of 10" and said made him rethink his whole approach to guitar solos.

Otis you rock as does Kenny . Beck kept making new records - never got stale for me. Like Bowie did even McCartney - Otis you do as well - keep writing and creating is the key

The Yardbirds are just the ultimate 60s guitar rock band featuring three of the best guitarist out of the English scene personally the Jeff beck era is my fave while I do like Jimmy Page and what led up to led Zeppelin and the early days with Eric Clapton but something about the beck era

Who's Jeff Beck?! Exactly! Barely noticed outside of players for most of his career, then he dies, and everyone finds out where the stuff they've been listening to came from.

I'd go so far as to say that Jeff Beck created the modern rock guitar solo. I could be wrong- but that's my take.
