Berlin is absolutely right. The bottom line is that if you don't know what you're playing, you'll advance to a certain point and that's it. I started by learning parts by ear for a long time, but once I started learning how the different musical keys are built, chord tones, major and minor scales, etc. my playing became much better and more varied. It really expands the possibilities of what you can do. I still learn things many by ear, but the formal musical knowledge is key. It's just learning the language of music and learning its "words", like you would learn any language.

I like that old wisdom of " i went to a music school, and they told me, this is how it really is". Wait a minute, how do we learn our own language, to say our first words, " mama" or " dada"? We learn it by ear. Only when we go to kindergarten and later primary school, do we learn the mechanics of the language. But we do not need the school to know how the speak. How the hell did humanity learn languages before academia? Academic world is good for those who want to be a part of it. But the problem is that it becomes " the right way" to do things. In science that works fine, but even then, there are people who discover scientific facts with attending any academies. "Scientific facts" are just part of reality, and science is just humanity's effort to try to understand that reality. Music academy is just an effort to try to grasp something, putting a name on something ,that the humanity has known for as long as we can understand. Yes you feel like the theory made you a " better" player. You just play differently now, and you can better imitate the other academically trained players that came before you, because they literally play by the same old rules you have now learned. What is that but an advanced photocopy machine, with jukebox capabilities. Personally, i do not like zealots like Jeff Berlin. If he had his way, there would be a law, forcing other people also to go thru the academic funnel. Academic world is usually where the worst zealots come from. I like the free market, people can learn in a school or not. We do not need people like Jeff Berlin to think for us.

The people who don't like Jeff's ideas on teaching/learning music don't like them because they are lazy/lack discipline & don't really want to put in the work to learn how to READ music & really put in the time to learn about harmony/theory etc. They want to learn how to slap/play fast noodle around & mimic other bass players they idolize. And if that's all they wanna do, fine! But don't knock an absolute legend/master of his craft like Jeff cuz that's what those people do. This man got banned from talk bass for crying out loud. How ridiculous. That's like babe Ruth being banned from fenway park. People are so friggin sensitive especially wooten "disciples". Just my opinion. Jeff is the man!!

I admire Jeff for his ideas on teaching. Trying to help all of us. I'm sad that he assumes all other teachers are incompetent beside himself. 😢 That said I'm still one of his fans and have nothing but respect for him. On my all time greats list.

He does acknowledge some bass teachers who aren’t incompetent, but I get your point. And yes, he definitely deserves to be on the all-time bass greats list. Thanks for weighing in, NJ Bass Academy!

Jeff has ALWAYS been one of my bass heroes! His perspective on learning is spot on and can be summed up in one word: motivation. Self-taught relies a WHOLE LOT on what your motivation is. I KNOW this because I've had to study language acquisition (degree in Linguistics) for multiple languages and music is the very same thing in that it is a language modality too that you have to learn. I could explain music in similar terms of phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics. Of course, there are also a couple things too that come from different areas with two active and two passive areas. Passives are: Listening & Reading. The actives are Writing and Speaking (or performing in music). You can get really COGNITIVELY good at three of them: Listening/Reading/Writing. However, the Neuromuscular performant is Speaking/Performing and that is where you will get better by doing. The underlying emphasis however is still motivation. If you're not motivated you won't progress. Thank you Jeff for pointing out the hard truths in learning.

I'm self taught over years & years & what drove mo to learn harmony was my constant mistakes!! Sometimes I wish I'd learnt 'properly' right from the beginning but I know I'd never be what ever it is I am now! So I agree with Jeffs approach. PS, it's Joe Hubbard who's put me straight re harmony, well to the level I've understood so far! Good interview 👍😊

Being 67 years old and like Jon said dabbling . I can’t turn back clock but if I could knowing what I know now, I’d be in the best music college there is , but coming out of the military in mid 70 I had to find a place to lay my head and eat and college was not even thinkable.anyway it’s all in the past with regrets. Education, education. Nice interview Jon.

Does not matter what Jeff Berlin, and school, any god , or the government says,.....people are free to either learn music academically, or not. If someone wants to study, go and study. If someone does not want to study, they don't have to. The problem is that Jeff Berlin wants to monopolize the studying, to the institutions and ways of studying that HE approves of. It's that BIG BROTHER mind-set of " I know what is best for you". If Jeff Berlin would get into politics, he would definitely try to make laws, trying to monopolize / homogenize musical education. That is exactly the vibe he has. He "knows what is right." This is the exact problem with academic people, just because they think one way, they assume they are correct. Why aren't these people happy, until everyone thinks like them, and does what they are doing ,and how they are doing it. Let the people choose, what and how they learn. Also, let the people choose whether they find out that they need to study. Honestly, i think Jeff Berlin is a bit upset, that other bass teachers crowd the market. That directly impacts Jeff's income. Free market gives opportunities to what works, and keeps the idiots away. I like that.
