Are the facts about his death as we where told? Did he drown trying to rescue someone from drowning?

He had a friend with him and a boom box type CD player; Jeff was just being playful and having fun and waded in fully clothed, even with his boots on, and was splashing around, according to his friend singing along to Led Zeppelin at the top of his lungs, just having a fun carefree moment that he didn’t realize was so dangerous. Even where he was, off the main channel of the Mississippi, I guess he thought that was safe, but you just don’t swim in that river, period. There was a boat going by and creating a little wake and his friend turned around just long enough to pick up and move the CD player back away from the water, when he turned back around, Jeff was just gone. He got caught in an undertow. And all of this happened as his band was getting on their flight out of New York to head to Memphis to start recording the album he’d been working on. Instead they get there to find a search underway. I admit I’m like everyone else; he was missing and presumed dead but I had this crazy idea that somehow he’d come up downstream and managed to somehow get himself to shore, but was possibly injured and just hadn’t been found yet. of course we all knew that wasn’t reality though, and after six days someone finally spotted his body from one of the paddleboats; he actually hadn’t gone that far and was floating right off the end of Beale Street. Nothing but nicotine in his system, no hard drugs or alcohol. This is the official answers from the people who were there, and there’s been no reason to doubt or dispute any of them. (not sure where you heard that he was trying to save someone else.) It was just a stupid, careless accident that took out one of the most gifted musicians of his time.
