Buckley basically invented a new genre with this album. Both musically and vocally it was unique at the time. It was also a massive influence on a lot of bands. I know Thom Yorke from Radiohead and Matt Bellamy from Muse both saw him play at a tiny venue in London. If you cant hear his influence on both their vocal styles then youre deaf. They changed their musical paths immediately after seeing him. Coldplay too. Their first album is very like Buckley. Just listen to Shiver and youll hear it immediately. His sound was slowly filtered into the mainstream. You dont even notice it now. Like i said, a massive game changer when he first appeared. His dad was no slacker either. Incredible vocal range just like Jeff. Shame they're both gone.

I was born in Memphis and have lived here most of my life. His drowning was an absolute tragedy. I was so excited he was coming to town to record. The story at the time said that he was not happy with the demos made in New York for his second album so he came and checked out Memphis and fell in love. He called his band and told them to get on a plane and get to Memphis. He died while they were in mid-flight. This is a great musical town. I have been honored to be a miniscule part of the music community here. The fact that this amazing musician saw the same thing in my hometown that I did and still do, moves me with a sort of pride I still feel whenever I think about him.

Definitely one of the best albums of the 90's. No skips!

imagine being that ungodly talented and dying at 30 - such a loss. And he was only 2 years older than his father Tim was when he ODd on heroin at 28, whom Jeff never had any relationship with, thereby inextricably linking them even more than they already were just by both being rock musicians.

dude. the best vocal performance on this album is Lilac Wine. Despite what may be the most popular. It's tender and gentle and the final chorus at the end is unbelievable. It never gets old. Second best song is Corpus Christi Carol. Third is Lover You Should Have Come Over.

Jeff Buckley should have been more popular in the U.S. but for some reason he was much bigger in Australia. He became more known after his death when his rendition of Hallelujah (written by and originally recorded by Leonard Cohen) was used after 9/11 as a backdrop for reporting on the tragedy. I saw him live in 1996 and read his biography, Dream Brother: The Lives and Music of Jeff and Tim Buckley. He was a disturbed and insecure young man. Mostly, because of his father, Tim Buckley, who was a famous folksinger and also a heroin addict. Tim abandoned his son and ended up dying of an overdose at 28 years old. Jeff was a handsome and extremely talented guy gone way too soon at the age of 30. It was a bizarre accident.

2 bands immediately come to mind when I listen to this - Yes and Cocteau Twins. At least, musicwise. Jeff Buckley's voice is something else.

Jeff Buckley uses complex layers in Grace of his incredible vocals that are "eclectic, passionate and pure". Been listening to Jeff Buckley since 90s. 'My fading voice sings of love.. But she cries to the clicking of time'. It's said that Jeff was swimming on his back and singing 'Whole Lotta Love' when he disappeared in the river. So many premonitions in this song, although unintended. God, I miss Jeff so much.

Jeff’s death is one of the great tragedies in music history. It’s still painful to think of all the music we were deprived of. For me it was like losing John Lennon, but even worse in a way: Lennon at least got to have a full career, both in the band and on his own. Jeff only got to make a single album. As for the song Grace though, we need to praise the co-writer, Gary Lucas - the man behind the hypnotic guitar riffs and the odd chord sequences. And as for further recommendations, the whole album is required listening, but So Real, Dream Brother and Lover You Should've Come Over are good starting points. But of course Jeff's version of Hallelujah is also a must-listen.

I had this album on heavy rotation in the day. He definitely didn’t write the usual formulaic pop song so his music does sound different. Even so ‘Last Goodbye’ was played a lot on radio here in Australia

I'm somewhat familiar with Jeff Buckley and was actually aware of how he died. I've never heard this song before. I liked the vocals but I liked the music a lot. The vocals and the music compliment each other very nicely but the music really did it for me. If I was hearing the lyrics correctly, they were eerily prophetic.

When this was first released I saw the video before sunrise getting ready for work. The excitement woke me right up. I grabbed a sticky note and wrote "Jeff Buckley - Grace". Went to the cd store after work. Been a fan since.

I was absolutely obsessed with this whole album when it came out. And it is definitely in my top 3 of all time! It is wonderful from beginning to the end. Jeff Buckley was one of the most unique voices out there, and I was crushed when he passed away. Please give the whole album a listen sometime it is a roller coaster of emotions. The Jeff Buckley story is: incredible, tragic, mind-blowing and incomparable. ...I was fortunate enough to be creating. playing and writing 'around,' when Buckley appeared in (moved to) N.Y.C. [w/Gary Lucas and then: into his solo career...] and was fortunate enough to witness him (and his incredible !!!! band!) play, a few times; as well as bumping into him (literally!!), and hearing him speak at the New Music Seminar (among other things.). ...In fact, it is quite possible that: a close, guitarist, friend of mine is on Buckley's cover of: "Yard Of Blonde Girls" (but, also: possibly not.-because he spent some time jamming with Jeff, in N.Y.C. on a session where Jeff and Inger Lorre were working on that song [my bud knew Inger Lorre and was hanging with her, that night] -and some of those sessions ended-up on the released version of that, incomplete, album-). The thing that Nick doesn't seem to know (and MANY people never knew/were aware of/understood/realized, either!), or, at least, doesn't, mention (but IS IMPORTANT!) is that: Jeff Buckley was, himself, the son on another musical innovator, who died at a young age, as well! Although Jeff was estranged from his father [Jeff's Mother: Mary Guibert, separated from Jeff's father, Tim, when Jeff was extremely young (a baby) and he grew-up with his mom; not his dad. They didn't have any contact until, once, briefly, just prior to Tim's death (from overdose) in 1975). All information expresses that they only met that once (as far as anyone knows or has ever said...). TIM BUCKLEY was a break-out star in the 1960s&1970s, himself. ...Jeff, later, investigated his father's music (as, by that point, Tim was gone) and, in fact musically, there are plenty of parallels -which, in some fashion: do not make any sense! (because the men barely met or knew one-another and developed their writing/compositional styles and skills and playing at different times, in different places, YET!!: ...it is as if there COULD be some such thing as "genetic creative inheritance" (which I don't think is, scientifically, possible and certainly not "provable"...but 🤷🤷)🤷‍♀!). Tin Buckley's most well-known contribution to '"he rock music canon" is the song: "Song To The Siren" [now utterly legendary]. Buckley composed the song to a set of lyrics/poetry written by a song-writing partner of his: Larry Beckett (Beckett was a song-writer and arranger, himself). It was the centerpiece of one of his more celebrated albums: Starsailor [which the early 2000s, English, band named itself after. ...Although they never covered any of Buckley's music and wrote in an entirely different vein. 🤷🤷]. "Song To The Siren" is, complete, majestic melancholy and other-worldliness. It has become even more famed, due to an '80s cover by a loose collective of musicians from the bands on the label: 4AD. This Mortal Coil. Their "Song To The Siren" cover didn't "hit," really, until about a decade after-the-fact; when: bands who sounded like the people on 4A.D. had become "the going thing." "Goth" and underground, so-called: "alternative" were (of course) the "going elements" and one of the most popular styles of that moment and the fans of these styles had, to a large degree, "taken over"-or, at least: had a fair influence on- the radio and popular sounds of that time. The cover of "Song To The Siren" by the "non-band": This Mortal Coil, became a lauded, beloved track, in the 1990s. ...Also: largely because: the vocalist on This Mortal Coil's version was: the brilliant, otherworldly, Elizabeth Fraser [commonly known as the primary vocalist for the band: Cocteau Twins]. This Mortal Coil's version is the "ne plus ultra" version and it is the only one that MOST people, have ever heard (IF they have, ever, heard the song, at all!). It has an elegiac, romantic, softly-'intolerable' (in its melancholy and pain) overwhelming quality. ...Only enhanced/iterated by Elizabeth Fraser's gorgeous, breathy, otherworldly, melodically, quietly, solemnly and beautifully: emotionally overwrought and 'teetering at the emotional edge;' yet: utterly MAJESTIC! voice. ...However: Tim Buckley's original is in NO way to be ignored or neglected! I love him so much, the only thing I've felt is i wish this album was a little less produced. When you hear his live performances, he still sounds impeccable, but just a little more raw which works for me better

No one builds a song like Jeff could. It's no wonder he worked so hard to write the second album, Grace is one of the most incredible debut albums anyone could ever create and following that up must have been such a burden. I still get chills when I hear that build up.

One of my favorite Jeff Buckley songs is not from this album. It's from the demos for Sketches For My Sweetheart the Drunk. It's called "Everybody Here Wants You". Slow, seductive white boy soul.

Strong recommendation for future consideration: "Hypnotica" by Afro Celt Sound System. I listen to this on loop whenever I'm making pottery or painting pictures.......or, teaching art. It's mind-blowing. Also Matt Corby........."Monday"

How about POCO, specifically “Crazy Love” and “In the Heart of the Night”?

While I, of course, think everyone can enjoy his music, I low-key think it depends on what you're bringing to the table emotionally and historically as to how much you might immediately connect with Jeff. And maybe that's biased because I carry a ton of baggage. But in my experience, that can inform one's ability to speak an artist's language when it's as complex and nuanced as Jeff's was.

Nick totally gets it, but what is the deal with Ty and Ryan? I just don’t understand. It’s like seeing the Mona Lisa and not liking it because you don’t like the way she smiles. C ‘mon guys, get a clue or something please. I could go on and try to explain why most musicians from disparate genres were obsessed with his album, but if Ty won’t even put this on his playlist, why bother? Epic fail because if there one time it was important to get it right, it was this one. You’ve given it up for a lot less I’m here to tell you, but as I’ve said , Nick is the only one who got it.
