Hopefully you've gotten better. Remember, with shredding, the faster you play the more economical your technique and movements must be. Its less about having fast fingers and more about timing and efficiency. Focus on only lifting your finger from and pressing on the string as little as it possible takes to get a clear note. Same with the pick. Don't move any further from the string then absolutely needed. Same goes for velocity. Less is more with shredding. Less movement equals faster notes. Don't quit though. I never thought I'd be able to play Jeff's material even after my first decade of playing and I thought I had reached my ceiling but I just kept playing and trying to do what he does here and there and eventually i got it. Master picking and study Paul Gilbert lessons on picking. And ifnyou haven't already, incorporate economy picking as well instead of strictly alternate picking

@molomono that is right and i know that. but when you augment the second in A phrygian you get a key change from F major/ D minor to C major/ A minor and play in the aeolian mode of those. when it should become harmonic minor as you said, you need a major third and not an augmented second. cause when you augment the second you have nowhere a major 7th.
@givemeajackson
@givemeajackson 12 жыл бұрын
@molomono just a little theory lesson: phrygian isnt a scale, it's a mode of the ionian system (also known as "church scales") there is no such thing as phrygian major. all 8 modes contain the same 8 notes, and it all depends on where you root it if it's major or minor. and jason becker did. sadly not anymore though.

@givemeajackson The Phrygian scale i'm talking about is the same scale as the Harmonic minor 5th position. Also no Aeolian is the 6th mode of the diatonic scale you shift the whole mode 3 full full tones from phrygian to get Aeolian, The way i see it is the Diatonic scale is all white key's on the piano. However the Phrygian Major is when you augment the distance between the second and third note of the scale, IE G becomes G# in the key of E.

@givemeajackson
@givemeajackson 12 жыл бұрын
@molomono yes, phrygian dominant is right, but it has a major third and not an augmented second. it is 100% the same as harmonic minor. it's called dominant cause when you have A minor, the dominant chord is E minor. when you have a major 3rd tough, the dominant chord is E major. you hear that change often in flamenco and classical music, it's a very distinct chord progression. augmented second just results in a key change and aeolian.
@givemeajackson
@givemeajackson 12 жыл бұрын
@molomono then you have a major 3rd and not an augmented second, and then it's just A harmonic minor. when you augment the second when playing A phrygian the result is A aeolian. i dont see how a mode can be major. btw, the piano thing is right as long as you're in A minor or C major. but if you play in like Db major you'll get a problem just using the white keys. you can shift the diatonic scale to whatever root you want, it remains the same shape (just some frets higher or lower on guitar).

@givemeajackson You might want to relearn the Diatonic scale. It's basicly just A B C D E F G Now depending on which note you start you get Iolian, dorian, phrygian, lydian, mixolydian, aeolian or locrian. When you augment anything in the diatonic scale you CAN"T have another mode, what you get is a new scale. By coincidence the Harmonic Minor's 5th shape is the same as Phrygian Major 1st. And yes i know the modes remain the same shape, full full half full full half full.

@givemeajackson From all i can see Phrygian Major is the same as the dominant because in the harmonic minor scales it is the 5th and that is the dominant. It supposably has "a distinctive augmented second interval" but whatever, when i play it it's not aeolian that's for sure.
@A7XfoREVer578

@A7XfoREVer578 No phrygian dominant is phrygian with a major 3rd, Harmonic minor is a minor scale with a major 7th. They are relative though, D phrygian dominant is G harmonic minor.

@givemeajackson And yes if you start on Db you get a bit more of a complicated scale note-wise but the principle stays the same. This however is irrelevant from the point that phrygian major is a scale. The Augmented Second Phrygian mode.

@givemeajackson 12 жыл бұрын
@molomono i dunno how you call it, i know it as the ionian system. and when you augment the second it becomes nothing but aeolian, nothing major phrygian! and theory reaches waaaaaaaay further than scales, you're right on that one. modes are just different positions of one and the same scale, exactly like in pentatonic.

Finally! Someone who agrees with me! Everytime I mention his goofy, over-the-top faces he makes and the fan blowing his hair back and all the other crap that we must endure, I always get crucified. The guys got talent, no doubt, but he needs to tone it down BIG time and let his fingers do the showboating, not his stupid antics. Thank you for bringing that up. I am right there with you~

@molomono phrygian dominant is phrygian dominant, i have no idea what phrygian major should be, and i doubt that it exists. the name is completely unlogical, cause a mode cant be major or minor. when you have phrygian like A Bb C D E F G A ( F major/ D minor) and augment the second, you get A B C D E F G A wich is either G ionian or A aeolian. see? when playing dominant, you go from A Bb C D E F G A to A Bb C# (

@givemeajackson What the fuck is the Ionian system, Last i checked it was called the Diatonic scale. With 7 modes, of which the phrygian is the 3rd mode. The Phrygian major scale is a Phrygian scale with an augmented second. Theory doesn't stop once you learned the modes. Modes are merely guidelines for sticking scales together. IMO
