There's been some speculation about what constitutes "Killer" drumming. Every one has their own opinion. My personal opinion is that a full on Mikkey Dee metal drum solo that has all guns blazing is every bit as relevant as a Jason "JT" Thomas FORQ tune that has a super FAT pocket with interesting subtle twists and turns that never deviate too far from the song. Killer drumming, IMHO, does not always have to be blazing chops. But I understand that someone else's opinion on that may differ, and that's OK! No one is wrong. That's the beauty of music. It's all relative.
To that end, I would like to post a lesson from the man who played one of the most historically discussed beats in the history of drumming. Even if you have never heard of the late Jeff Porcaro, the song "Rosanna," or Jeff's band Toto that wrote and recorded it, it doesn't matter. This is super smooth drumming at its finest from one of drumming's most beloved icons.
