This is a short video excerpt of Vaquero Horseman Jeff Sanders discussing the difference between true and false collection of the horse.
Jeff Sanders was born in Merced California and raised on the Central Coast, right in the heart of Vaquero country. Jeff is a 6th generation Californian. He is one of very few teaching the California Vaquero style of horsemanship who was raised in the traditions and is truly a Californio himself. Jeff teaches clinics around the world.
We love learning from Jeff because of his wealth of information and utmost concern for the welfare of the horse.
Visit Jeff's website at: www.californiabridlehorse.com/
for more information about Jeff and his upcoming clinic schedule.

As a long time classical dressage horseman, I can say with absolute certainty that Jeff is 100% right. Collection works precisely as he describes it.

Absolutely correct ! What a shame that the American show ring has become dominated by this abberation of false collection !

Jeff. I could not quite see what you did to hind quarters to lift his back. Great video. I never thought of it this way.

So how did he do that from the ground? He pressed somewhere near the horses pelvis (I think). So, next question: how would you do that from the saddle?

Collection comes about organically from proper gymnastic exercises like Haunches In and Shoulder In, turns on the haunches, etc.

Tru collection comes from the bending or folding of the joints of the hind quarters

Ok so when we move forward how is this happening? I'm confused ☺🤔

That is part of it...but you have to build strength and suppleness for that "folding" to occur. The pelvis, btw, also plays a role in this process, as Jeff was explaining, you need the pelvis to be able to tilt under.

So how do I get my horses pelvis lifted whilst in the saddle?

Nic Evans - Exercises/ movements that create weight transfer to the back end. A good backup is a good place to start! 😊👍🏻

Nic Evans - shoulder-in is also a great exercise.

You don’t lift the pelvis, you raise the thorax and lower the pelvis. In classical dressage it’s called relative elevation. Bending the joints of the hind quarters is what collection is all about. Refer to Gymnazium of the Horse by Gustav Steinbrecht. The definitive work on this topic
@pamelapeterson2987

This was actually what Jeff was saying...the pelvis tips down and forward, the hind legs come up closer under the center of gravity, the thorax and withers lift.
