The fact that VAR upheld the decision is even more appalling. The guys in the booth are far too often more concerned with not hurting their mates’ feelings instead of making correct calls.

Great admirer of Geoff .....top man. More to the point is should VAR exist at all? It's slowed the rhythm of the game and while I admit it gets things right I think accepting the old ways of good and bad ref decisions as part and parcel of the game is preferable.

The only way the yellow card could have been overturned was to not give the penalty. Unfortunately, once VAR agreed with ref to award the penalty, the yellow card decision couldn’t be changed.

VAR is not the problem, it's the personnel there and they need to be investigated. Those guys could be smoking weeds before games.

Trent Alexander-Arnold put his arm over the shoulder of Anthony Gordon the same way but with less force earlier in the season and Gordon dived to the ground, was in Newcastle's half, ref gave a foul but talksport presenters and others were demanding he should've been off with a 2nd yellow. AndyTowsend wants to put the criminals in the judge's seat. Where is the wording in the laws which distinguishes between shirt pulling offences on the basis of the strength? Pulling an opponent's shirt is a foul, the offender does it because he/she does it to gain advantage, and even a light tug may be sufficient to break a stride pattern or balance at a critical. Part of the problem lies in the tolerance of officials to the epidemic of holding and shirt pulling that attends every corner, a tolerance that is now exploited in the practice of dead ball routines, which now resemble NFL methods,e mploying blockers who hold and/or obstruct opponents. A foul is a foul, is a foul! May be the solution at corners is to create zones for defenders and attackers, rather like the separation for penalty corners in hockey. As for the sending off, the present system of 'totting up' of niggling offences which equates a couple of tugs with a potentially leg-breaking challenge, ( until the length of suspension is decided at hearing), needs review. I am not a fan of sin-bins, but perhaps an enforced substitution for a second 'professional' foul would be appropriate, perhaps with a 10, or 15 minute delay, ( although personally I have doubts about this, as coaches will possibly set their sides up to kill time and space until they can field the sub). Finally, despite my opening remark about Andy Townsend, I do wonder quite often whether any of our present crop of officials have ever played the game. Some years ago I believe there was a scheme to bring former players onto the football league roster by fast-tracking them through the qualifying process. Of course, if you have been earning £50K,plus, a week, facing the inevitable abuse from the crowd for what the officials get may not be an attractive proposition, but for players from lower divisions, or even levels 5 and below it may offer 10-15 years of relatively well-paid employment.

Burnley player barely touches him whilst winning the ball. Contrast that with kudus through on goal and burn shoulder charges into him whikst making no attempt whatsoever to play the ball. One gets a pen and a 2nd yellow the other nothing. Home decisions!!

Virtually every other sport doesn't have the issues regarding refereeing and technology that seems to infect football. Why is that ? There must be a reason why football has issues regarding officials and technology every week

It was a soft penalty, but a penalty it was. And if it was penalty, it was a booking, get over it. Everyone was calling for goal line technology and the equivalent of TMO due to poor refereeing and linesman. Guess what, you've got it, but don't like it. If the ball was a centimetre over the goal line its a goal. But if a player is a toe nail offside you are moaning like hell. Same with fouls. VAR go to the letter of the rules, whether soft or not. The game is now so over analysed its getting tedious; even more tediuos by having to listen to hippocrits opinions.

Worked this out st rhe tim, the reason it didnt get overturned was because Darren England gave matey a second yellow card. Supposedly they cant get involved at that point, tying themselves up in knots with their rules and regulations. If he doesnt give the second yellow, 100% it would of been overturned

They will never put ex players in VAR because the pgmol are so protective of their own officials that they would rather give terrible decisions so just so their mates are covered than allowing the ex players to embarrass them by showing those errors straight away
