The song is about Alice in Wonderland and how the story is actually about Alice doing drugs. "One pill makes you larger and one makes you small". In the story Alice drinks potions, takes pills, smokes mushrooms causing her to hallucinate and go on this fantastic journey into Wonderland. There's a talking rabbit who's focused on time and how he "can't be late". There's a caterpillar sitting on a mushroom smoking a hookah pipe. The pieces on the chess board become men who want to attack her. She comes across an endless tea party hosted by the Mad Hatter. Then there's the Red Queen who wants to cut off her head. The song warns you not to waste your time on "the pills that mother gives you cause they don't do anything at all'. If you want to go on a trip, 'go ask Alice she knows" what pills will get you to Wonderland.

Grace Slick the singer turned 80 this year, I think it speaks to her talent that someone so young enjoys her/their music!

Looking for the Grace Slick isolated vocal of this song is a worthy pursuit. Without the music it is easier to really appreciate her voice.

Every time I hear this song, I keep remembering the scene in "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" with Dr. Gonzo telling Raoul (Hunter S. Thompson) to drop the tape machine in the bathtub when the song peaks.

Some people who are watching this video are probably laughing at the garb and sunglasses etc (it's the sixties ,man ,get over it) ...but you know what is no joke ...the music ...Peace and Love.

The building of the tension and sound in the music that matches her volume and energy tword the end of the song after the slow ride finally building to this uptempo crescendo at the end is just masterful. It's the slow tempo and tension here that really drives this work of art.

"Today" is a beautifully haunting love song from the same album, and "Volunteers" was a great rallying, protest song from 1969; both were sung by Marty Balin.

For Psychedelic Music other than White Rabbit by Jefferson Airplane....you might want to react to "You Keep Me Hanging On" by Vanilla Fudge which was a cover song of The Supremes of Motown and the song went to No.1 on the Billboard Chart in 1968. Very Psychedelic!!!

I've been listening to Vanilla Fudge recently and I think my favorite number is their cover of "Season of the Witch". It's everything about them that was great and a lot that wasn't great.

Look around online and find the story about an early Airplsne show in Germany where a VERY drunken Grace, snarling at the audience and taunting them about WWII, growling "who won the war, who won the war"? Paul told that story in an interview, he said it was "very ugly" and nearly prompted a riot.

A compare and contrast of Airplane's/CSN's versions of Wooden Ships, released pretty much the same year would be cool. The song was written by members of both bands, so they both did a version of it.

White Rabbit is a great song. I like that it's short. Some people felt it should've been longer, but I think it's exactly how they wanted it to be. There just wasn't any reason to add any more. It was just the right amount : )

Have you ever watched as Alice in wonderland. She goes down the rabbit hole and she takes tablets which makes her larger band small. Then runs across a smoking caterpillar. Ref .. smoking opium. Any knights talking backwards. And the queen of hearts saying off with their heads. Glace slick found so many stories that referenced drugs. Like Peter Pan. Sprinkling dust so they could fly.. cocaine. If you ever went back and watched Alice in wonderland. The song Will make more sense

To understand the lyrics you have to realize that the Alice she's talking about is Alice In Wonderland and all the other things mentioned are other characters in the book.

One of my top ten of all time, from anyone. For another Jefferson Airplane Grace Slick psychedelic masterpiece, listen to Rejoyce (this is the correct spelling). A bit too long for radio play at the time so not the hit White Rabbit was. Also, probably too psychedelic for mass radio play. I think you will definitely like it and get it. There is no video that I know of with Rejoyce. Don’t let that stop you! By the way , the studio version of White Rabbit is also better than this live version in that Grace’s vocals are even better!
