I grew up in Southern California as a teenager in the’60’s. It was an incredible time for us to be around. It was a history making time but we didn’t think of it that way. It was just what we did. Saw quite a few bands in those years, saw the Airplane ✈️ twice. It’s a bygone era, along with many of the musicians from that time. Looking back, I would say I feel privileged to have seen any of those bands. Most of us are pushing 70 (or more). We were at the forefront of the changes in how rock music changed.

Then give the honest, hardworking TAX-payer the bill. Bravo!! Well here in TX we got two places like that.. Harris County and Dalls DFW. Whose in charge there? Liberals my man.

The thing that separates Grace's performance from all others is she has organically mastered the ability to sing legato. It's a smooth flowing from one note to the next rather than punching each note. Not many pop/rock singers know how to do this properly. Additionally, Grace has a nuanced sense of dynamics and timing. One of the things that separates a vocalist from the average pop singer is that Grace just stands there and sings. She does not strut about the stage, or engage in histrionics. Grace does it all with her voice.

Great analysis! Joy Williams can sing in this manner too although they sing two distinctly different styles. Joy's work with John Paul White in The Civil Wars is a study in vocal control and tonality. Agreed, they could learn a thing from her. In fact the fact she doesn't move and holds eye contact with the camera makes her extremely intense as a performer. Somebody else in the comments used the word intense and it's spot on, she's exudes intensity nobody else has and it only lends to her performance. Sometimes less is WAY more.

Grace Slick is one of the authors of the period known as the'60's. She invented this persona, and then she performed it. Her invention has been obscured but her manifest talent as a performer still shines on. I've listened to this countless times over the 50 plus years and I still marvel at it. Don't forget- Tune in. Tune in to the natural world, tune in to who you really are, tune in to what is going on in the human world around you, and then- Turn on. Turn yourself on. Don't just be a receiver, become a transmitter. Engage, contribute, participate. And then - Drop out. At some time, at some level you have an obligation to drop out from doing only what is expected from you, from just going along with the plan and contributing to the cancer that is devouring the planet. You have to drop out at some time in some way to prove your seriousness to yourself. Really. Tune in, turn on, drop out. Greatly misunderstood wisdom from the '60's.

I remember when this song came out and the movie that it was used for Go Ask Alice is one of the best movies that shows you the high's and low's of drug addiction, it also shows you what you can expect from your life. A real eye opener for anyone who wants to listen. The song still has a strong effect that was intended for the era that it was released. Jefferson Airplane was and still is an awesome group. 😉

No one can cover this song. Excellent singers try, but it's not just Grace Slick's vocal ability they have to live up to. The original is simultaneously controlled and wild. There is not a moment of fear or hesitation or compromise or normalcy. It could have turned out campy or overly theatrical, but she took the chance. I think this song will live forever.

If I remember correctly it took her 4 years to write and fine-tune. It was based off a Miles Davis performance which Grace would listen to for hours on end on LSD. I think she had most of it down before even joining Jefferson Airplane.

Those of us who did LSD in the late 60's were enchanted by this song, and the movie... the significance of spiritual creativity and the deeper psychic impact of experiences like music and art left an impression and perspective that most people never experienced. The drug wasn't needed anymore, because we had seen what was possible. This enhanced our lives throughout our later years as we were inspired to pursue the development of our souls thru artistry using music, illustration, writing, dancing, etc.
