I think the hardest part on this removal was getting to the bees, and to do it, it was necessary to split a log in half, long ways, in order to expose them. However, with a bit of help from Julio, we got the log split, removed the bees, and then relocated them. All in all, a great adventure. God's peace to all.

I've got 5 natural log hives set up on my farm, with honeybees in them. I enjoy watching and providing them a natural cavity to live in. I get honey occasionally but really just enjoy their presence for pollination. I enjoy catching the swarms and giving them away or put them in another log. Thanks for posting another Friday video!

Mr Ed, I think that the original colony may have absconded and a swarm moved in after the tree was taken down and that’s why there’s no stores. I operated heavy equipment in my younger years and had to take several bee trees down for roads or buildings. Once the tree is on the ground within a day or two the bees would abscond and then I would take a chainsaw to it and harvest the honey. I didn’t know back then that I should have been saving the bees!

Having a variable-speed motor in a bee-vac machine is ideal. It is gentle to the bees, it is much quieter in operation. In addition to this, I believe that with a slower motor speed and gentle suction, that the battery will not discharge so quickly - you do not need to worry that the battery will be discharged before the bees have all been collected.

Mr. Ed, you surprised on that one! I couldn't believe you started using that rather handy I must add tool, without at least having a veil on. I think even the Dirt Rooster would have at least a mosquito net on knowing that would stir them up. Did you scope the hole to know where the comb was or are you just a blessed man? It couldn't have been cut open any better!

Chúa bình an. Ông Ed

the bees who have been here for millions of years know what they want are doing fine, now man has stepped in to do what is "best for them", their good life is over as they knew it.

There are many philosophies on keeping bees, and "ownership" is one of them. However, I prefer the term "steward," and regard my role as one of assisting the bees to prosper on their terms and not force my idea of how bees should behave upon them, which is why I do not treat our bees. Given that, why then did I remove the bees from their natural habitat and install them in a conventional bee hive? Had these bees not bee relocated, they would have starved and died over the winter because there were not sufficient stores of pollen or honey in the hive for them to make it. Now, they are in a bee box being fed, and their likelihood of survival is greatly increased. Thanks for watching. God's peace brother. Mr. Ed

Doing clean up around my hometown. (Ft Myers). Hurricane made a big mess. I have seen so many hives that drowned in the storm and surge😢😢😢😢😢😢. So many hives in water meters on the ground and it is horrible to see them all dead. I am super stoked that my bees at home survived all that wind.(they were ANGRY the day after, but now are back to normal.) I have a downed tree I have to go get bees out of when I get the time, but I am working over 80 hours a week on disaster relief.

I wonder if the hive lasted that long because they rested the tree on cinder blocks? A log on the ground would get damp and rot, and more crawling insects would get directly in. Maybe keeping it dry and elevated prevented that?

What happens to the hive bees that get left behind? And do the robber bees join the colony or is their inherent job to remain a robber?
@JeffHorchoff
@JeffHorchoff Жыл бұрын
The bees that are left behind will eventually find another hive to call home, all they have to do is bring in some honey and they will be welcomed. As long as not to many robber bees are vacuumed, they will join the new hive. Bees are VERY social. God's peace Melanie. Mr. Ed

Question. Since that colony had been there long enough to reorient their comb, why not cut the log and take the whole thing at night to your bee yard? Seems like they would do just as well there over winter as moving them to a normal hive but with less stress. Then in the spring as the flow kicks off you could hive them and give them the best chance to survive the move. I do removals and the end of September is the latest I’ll attempt a relocation.
@JeffHorchoff
@JeffHorchoff Жыл бұрын
I could have taken the log, and I have done so many times in the past. However, on this particular hive, due to the nearness of winter and my fear of them starving out, I chose to remove the bees from the tree and place them in a hive. As it turned out, because the bees had insufficient stores of food due to the condition of the comb, no doubt they would have perished over the winter due to starvation. One more thing concerning you stopping removals after September. I love doing removals in the winter, as long as temperatures reach 50 degrees, for several reasons, lowest number of bees in the hive, little if any brood at all in the hive, and less honey to deal with. Also, as long as all the stores are given back to the bees, winter removals have the highest percentage of surviving the removal as opposed to dong a removal in warmer weather. Thanks for watching, and I hope you will check out more of my over 500 bee wrangling/ bee rescue adventure videos and let me know what you think of them.
