This presentation includes a room by room talk-through-tour to explain details and features that make this an attractive trawler to own.
Selene yachts has been building and designing ocean going passage makers for over 20 years. Today over 400 Selene trawlers are cruising the oceans. I am more of a Nordhaven fan,however this is a nice vessel.I really enjoyed your notes that you edited on to the screen as you were going through each section of the boat. Excellent job on the video.

Stephen: Thank you very much. I know Nordhavns very well having worked with PAE for fourteen years. Selene has done a very good job of building an excellent trawler challenger. There are a lot of great boats to choose from and a serious buyer is advised to check out as many as they can before making a final decision.

This is a very pretty boat that no doubt would be comfortable on board for many weeks at a time. Love the easy to get around side decks and multiple boarding options. I took a peek at your website and (1) I always thought that you were west coast focused - I was wrong and (2) you list some very fine boats in all price ranges. Hopefully things settle down in the next few months so we can all get back to cruising and seriously considering moving up a couple feet in length and beam.

I do live in CA and JMYS was started out west, but the trawler market is all over, I fly all over the US and internationally (it was a lot easier to do that pre-Covid). I've yet to see a Selene that I didn't love. There's many great boat builders, but Selene can hang with any of them, and, in my opinion, is better than many (most?). I'll be buying a boat, hopefully within the next year, and I'll be looking for a Selene!

Julian: Thank you very much for your comment. As you get larger (the Selene 57 is not a small boat) you have more room to play with and the High Spirit pilothouse is ideal. Great helm seat, room for others to be in the room, the access to the cabins or up to the flybridge and the watch berth - a lot of space and yes, comparable to a Nordhavn.

Rusty: We have the original write up on our listings sold section - it sold for close to the asking price. Over the last two years trawlers have appreciated in value. To buy this boat today, depending on location, equipment, condition, etc. between $800,000 - $1,000,000 for a ball park. Thank you for your nice note. Any idea what the air draft is with the radar arch lowered as it looks hinged at the base. It states 21'6" with antennas down and if the arch does lower it would appear to gain you an extra 5 - 7 feet in clearance, a bit like an Ocean Alexander can. Thank you in advance.

Gopher: I don't know if they have ever lowered the arch on High Spirit, let me see if I can find out what that would reduce the "air draft" by, might take me a couple of days. Thanks for your question!

I like Selenes, just wish there were 2 changes to the default setup. 1) a second gate to the fore deck so you have one port and starboard. 2) the grill was placed behind the arch rather than in front. The placement just screams smoke in your face when you use it and if you live in an area where FB enclosures are the norm, trapped smoke from the enclosure. It just seems to be a poor choice to locate the grill there when you look at the smoke issue, convenient for use being right at the top of the access and beside the seating.

Jacqui: Good points. I think they only have one access to the foredeck (most boats in this size only have one) due to the reasonable beam and it bolsters the Portuguese bridge and in big seas is one less potential opening for water to crash in to. The grill is convenient from a -hey-this-is-a-cool-place-to-install-one, but any fixed grill is subject to the wind coming from another direction. I guess a fan could help blow out the smoke, but your point is well made. I think a portable grill a few feet further aft (with an adjustable wind block) would be more practical. @@JeffMerrillYachts I'm currently looking, trying to decide between a 1983 Defever 68 and a 1979 Hatteras LRC ( 58 loa ) Other than the length, there isn't a lot to differentiate these 2 as far as facilities, fuel, range etc go. I'm leaning more toward the Hatteras though, she has stabilisers while the DeFever doesn't and the Hatteras also has 2 stroke detroits 71 series which I'm kind of partial to.

Scott: Yes, you could, but it is a lot more efficient if it is ordered from the start. Finding a suitable space after the build is tricky. The active fins do a great job

Your presentation is very good. It it is like you are selling a model home and not a boat For those of us interested in purchase we need to know the hours on both engines and generator and also how the boat has been maintained. Also given this 15 year old boat what improvement to or updates are recommended for electronics and other elements.

This is a very capable trawler, but I've never been asked what it would withstand in a storm. Difficult question to answer, with all of the weather forecasting these days it's much easier to avoid strong winds and large seas.

Beautiful boat, but once you start talking about brokers teamed up with a co-broker I'm fairly sure I can't afford this boat. What would you give me for a Crownline 250cr for trade?

Derek: As the broker of record I'm spending a lot of my time running JMYS and can't be the active listing broker for all of the boats we are marketing. Rob is great, as a Selene 55 owner he understands what is involved and is a natural to be the lead on this boat. The seller would have to agree to the trade, brokers don't normally take them in. We live in the trawler world and, as such, if you had a trawler that we could market that might be more appealing, but it's best to sell your boat, have money to spend and then go shopping. Ben: It's a requirement for me, even as a back up you can't go wrong and if you have an electrical Etch-a-sketch, you will be happy you have been cross plotting on paper.

Max: They certainly were popular through the 90's and a lot of boat cabinetry was built to accommodate them. They are ideal for boats as you well know. You can probably find an old tube style at an antique store or TV repair shop.

TPS - a very capable person could single hand her for short runs, the current captain does it all the time. For a long trip I prefer a minimum of 3. The operations are straight forward the care and maintenance is what takes the most time. No, you don't need a professional crew, a well trained owner operator couple can do this relatively easily. Scott: So many variables - primarily what speed rpm/fuel burn is most efficient. I'm sure the builder has specific calculations. 3,000 miles is possible at a slower speed. How far do you want to go non-stop?

Theory: Nav/com is always a place where you can spend more money on upgrades. Monitor sizes have some limits by the console dash furniture built in. Some people maximize the displays, others do not.

I've read reviews that Selenes are junk. I'd like to know more because we are interested in a 38. But after reading bad reviews on quality we are not looking at a Helmsmen.

Kirk: I'm not sure where you get your reviews, but I have had great success with my clients and Selene trawlers over the years. I'm sure every builder has had an issue or two, but I've never heard someone condemn an entire brand - that isn't realistic at all. Helmsman is a good build. Roger Harrison: Roger Wilco beat me to it, the full specifications are located on JMYS.com. I am relying on what I was told, not sure who did that measurement. Typically the arch will lower and the top point of the profile is the venturi windscreen on the flybridge, but I think this model is too tall for the Loop.

Thanks for the information. I was a little concerned about the draft also. It’s a little deeper than what was recommended to me. I think I’ll look at a Fleming 58 for my needs.

@@rogerharrison7609 The AGLCA has details on "ideal" draft (I recall it is about 5') and the air draft clearance (about 19') and I believe they also have a "Looper" list of brands and models that have completed the trip. You can not go wrong with a Fleming, provided it meets the dimensional requirements, they build a beautiful boat.
