We'll show you how to take apart the whole kitchen sink drain assembly with the drain strainer and repair the leak DIY once and for all.

How to fix a leaky sink
To fix a leak under the sink, you need to put a pan down under the p-trap plumbing to catch the water that will gush out when you open up the p-trap nuts. Then you remove the long drain pipe from the bottom of the kitchen sink drain by unscrewing the retaining nut.
Leak under kitchen sink
Is your kitchen sink leaking under rubber gasket? Then you can repair the leaky sink by using a universal drain basket wrench to remove the drain nut, then you pull the gasket and the cardboard friction washer, and push up the kitchen sink drain assembly from below, and it will pop up through the top side of the kitchen sink.
Now there will be no more leak under kitchen sink, and that is how to remove kitchen sink drain flanges.
Next you install the new kitchen sink drain flange, and go underneath to install the rubber gasket, then the cardboard washer, and finally the drain basket nut. Be sure to use one of the wrenches we link to below to tighten the kitchen sink drain basket nut.
Replacing drain pipes under the kitchen sink and check for leaks at the P-trap, and where the strainer drain meets the bottom of the sink, and make sure there is no water leak at the rubber gasket.
Then install all the kitchen sink drain plumbing, including the P-trap.
Now you know how to fix a leaky sink
And that folks is how you fix a leaky sink. So now you can be a hero to any of your friends with a leaky sink, after you see this plumbing tips video. That is how you fix a kitchen sink drain leaking water.

One trick I use to check for leaks is to use a piece of Scott blue paper shop towel. When the towel gets damp the wet area on the towel goes from light blue to dark blue. If you lay a piece of the blue towel underneath the sink, it's really easy to see where the leak is coming from. This is especially important under the sink since it's dark. It can be hard to see wet marks on a white paper towel. I also take a piece of the blue towel and wipe around all of the joints. If the towel changes color, I know there is a leak at that point.
@jeffostroff
@jeffostroff 2 жыл бұрын
Funny you mentioned that because I just did exactly that two days ago at my friends house. I've been using the blue shop towels because they show the water a little better than the white paper do

Great video. A very Key bit of information you did not mention is how tight to get the new drain “flange” nut. I am pretty sure I originally tightened mine too tight and it squeezed out most of the putty and a year later I had a leak. I also realized mine did not come with the cardboard piece. Your music? Drowned out that Very Crucial information. Thanks for the info. As a woman rebuilding a house from the inside out for the last two years… I am constantly learning the details that I overlooked.

I woke up this morning and found dirty water under my kitchen sink. Never having replaced a sink drain, I started searching for help and found your video. THANK YOU SO MUCH!! Not only do I now understand what I have to do, and it doesn’t seem too challenging, but I also know why it failed in the first place-the builder used the cheapest of everything here, including plumbing parts. @@jeffostroff Not yet. Everything went well, but when I went to check the paper towel on the floor underneath the sink, it was wet. ☹️ It’s leaking between the porcelain sink and the new drain (around the plumber’s putty, I assume). I tightened that huge nut under the connection to the sink a bit. The whole think moved a bit, and some more putty came out in the sink, so I’m thinking I didn’t get the new drain perfectly straight.... I’ll take it apart and do it if it’s still leaking. This is why I hate anything related to plumbing. Electricity? No problem. Plumbing? Yuck. Thanks again for your video. It was really helpful!

I needed a plumber's putty 101! Thanks. 👍 At 120 lbs, I can do it with no wrench & see vast improvement. A rusty pan was catching funk when I moved in. I tossed it & put sealant on it. 2 years on, my "fix" is failing, and I refuse to call my landlord. I'll just get pissed when he tells me tape & a rusty pan are perfect. It's insulting. I've seen his place. It's impeccable.

I just removed/replaced my 2 sink strainers yesterday. Even having the proper tools to loosen the large 'nut' on the bottom, it was so rusted, it wouldn't move. Less than 3 minutes with a Dremil tool/cutting wheel cut through the metal ring to spread with a screwdriver and peel off. Basin strainer lifted up and out of the sink. Just pay attention to the angle/depth so you don't cut into your sink.

Thanks so much for this video, including the helpful links to parts on Amazon. This made the job a breeze. I didn't buy the circular wrench, just the "half" wrench. I probably won't use it again for years, so having both would've been overkill.
@jeffostroff
@jeffostroff 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, that's fine, that circular wrench even though it is the best out there, is HUGE, I don't even keep in my tool bag, leave it home in the big plumbing tote bin of parts, because I rarely use it. In fact, 2 weeks ago I also used the half wrench to remove an old kitchen strainer before installing a garbage disposal!

Thank you this was clear and easy to follow, installation was quick !!!!! What took me so long was taking off the old leaky drain that was a different model, I got the nut off but the bottom part was still stuck and wouldn’t come off. After bending the bottom frame for 30 minutes I was able to get it off. I bought the new model drain you showed and it was so easy to install! Again thanks for the video you saved me some money!!!!!

Awesome Jayce yes you are right sometimes taking off the old hardware can be a real nightmare. There's been times rush spent a 1/2 hour or an even an hour I'll try to get way up behind the sink faucet and with years of water dripping down on it everything's all rusted and you can't get anything to budge

Thanks Jeff. Discovered a 'licensed contractor' hadn't installed the securing ring on straight! One question: why not silicon caulk rather than plumbers putty?
@jeffostroff
@jeffostroff 3 жыл бұрын
Some plumbers prefer silicone, but you have to wait 30 minutes or more before you can test, so they don't want to hang around.

My sink drain basket has a very slow leak. It looks to have the cardboard ring issue. Would you recommend to just try tighten it or spray flexseal on it or should I replace the sink drain basket?
@jeffostroff
@jeffostroff 4 жыл бұрын
If the cardboard got wet, it's end of life, so a new strainer is what I would do, they are so inexpensive anyway. Even if you decide not to replace the strainer, you still need to remove it first because you have water coming through the flange due to plumber's putty breaking down. So you have to remove the strainer basket first form the sink, scrape off all putty from strainer and the spot on the sink where it seals, then apply new plumbers putty and install new strainer basket.

I am about to "fix" this leak for the 3rd time this year...
@jeffostroff
@jeffostroff 4 жыл бұрын
Why does it keep leaking? Maybe the large nut is not tight enough so the drain flange is shifting? These can be tough ones to nail down.

You should also look at the amount of items you are storing under your sink. I've repaired mine several times over several years and after investigating why its keeps leaking I discovered that I have too much stuff under the sink. Evertime I move something around to get to something else I noticed that the drain pipe gets bumped. Over time this bumping causes enough of a shift that it breaks the water tight seal of the putty which allows water to seep through.

Thanks for this. Our kitchen sink went from acceptable "weeping" from the drain to outright leaking from the drain. In our area, plumbers are so busy that we couldn't reach anyone in person, and some of their voicemail messages indicated that they were booked out for weeks. So, I started looking into how to fix the leak myself. I found this video, and although I wouldn't characterize myself as being handy, once I bought all of the tools and parts, I was able to fix the leak myself easily with about a 10 minute effort.

just developed a leak. 80 year old house. Looks like the sink strainer was completely installed wrong and the metal nut is corroded. I have a good start to attempt this repair now. Thank you!
@jeffostroff

Yes we often see that not corroded. If the drain is installed incorrectly then overtime water will still leak down below the sink and start to corrode anything down there that is metal
