Looking forward to the review of this one, as well as the other releases. Previous reviews have done a great job of displaying the ball at different angles/releases, as well as comparisons. Might not chime in much, but this channel is on the list of those I look forward to seeing pop up in the feed.

All reactive resin balls have a base urethane resin. The NU Blue is a completely redesigned resin to imitate the urethane structure.

Just got a 15 lb. Hammer NU blue last week. I did not try it in league at first but did throw a couple of practice games of 219 and 225. Good but not great. My league average is about 195, so this was better than average for sure. This ball runs long for me and has some back end but this is adjustable depending on how one delivers it. I like to be under the ball and lift through the ball as it comes off my hand, so it looks like it is headed for a 3-6 pin hit and then it turns over about 5' from the pins, coming neatly into the 1-3 pocket. It delivers good pin action with fewer corner pins. As a senior bowler, this is good for me, even though I only roll the ball around 13-13.5 mph. I can drop this to 11-12 mph and still get good hits for strikes if I give the ball some room via moving left on the lane and keeping my same strike target. How much movement depends on speed and lift, so YMMV. I do not turn the ball but have experimented a bit with a small amount of turn and the ball seems to respond to this quite well by running a little longer before hooking into the pocket. Basically, it is a very good ball with multiple reactions available depending on your speed, loft, and delivery style. I like this ball a lot and am learning how to make the best used of it in multiple practice games. Will start using it in league shortly.

The one thing i want to know is how long will the ball last, I love the purple because it doesnt absorb oil so it stays the same as long as you keep up with the surface, the NU will most likely need to be soaked on top and over time lose its hook
@Swish710
@Swish710 10 ай бұрын
My understanding is that even though it does absorb oil, it's not anywhere near as quickly as reactive balls but still gets under the PBA 45-minute rule, so it likely won't need to be soaked or whatever as often as you would need to for a reactive ball. That means if you keep it clean with ball cleaner and wiping the oil after each shot, etc. and you'll likely be fine for some time.

JR Raymond has been killing it with swag urethane ball at 81 hardness. It seems that the harder shell allows him to use the ball for the whole block instead of just one or two games.

I'd say yes if the lanes you bowl on are on the drier/hooking side. This is not a very big hooking ball, so if the lanes aren't helping your ball hook (if there's not a lot of dry towards the gutter) then you might want to look at a more aggressive option. However, if the lanes hook a lot then this ball would be great.

I would be surprised if they recycled covers from that far in the past. Conditions have changed so much. It's easier to recycle a core and put a stronger cover on it than vice versa.

If you don't have a urethane-type smooth ball reaction in your arsenal and you bowl on conditions where you would need one, then it's definitely worth looking at.

I've been bowling for about a year and I've had a hyped hybrid and I'm currently using a Rubicon uc3, I was looking into getting a phase 2 but now I'm thinking about this one, my current issue with my throw, is that I feel like I have no miss room, and the ball can be a bit unpredictable at times, I currently average about 150-175, with an embarrassing high game of 217 with my previous highs being just slightly lower. I want something that is going to hook more but still be predictable enough to be able to line up my shot in a couple throws on the lanes I'm on since some of our tournaments are on wooden lanes that have been sanded recently enough to not hook at all. I also know nothing about drilling and I'm going to do some research on that but I would love some input.

@Swish710
@Swish710 10 ай бұрын
Hi Carter - I'm going to be completely honest - if you're averaging 150-175, the absolute best thing you can do for your game would be to take the money you were going to spend on a new ball and instead spend it on some lessons with a reputable coach in your area. The things you can learn from someone who knows how to teach and how to fix problems is going to serve you better in the long run and will make you a better bowler. No bowling ball has ever made someone a better bowler. Bowling balls are just tools, nothing more. You can have all the best and correct tools, but if you haven't trained yourself to best use them, it won't matter. A bowling ball isn't going to raise your average from 175 to 220, but a good coach absolutely can.

This is a pretty looking ball for sure, but the whole idea seems very dumb. I have a rare Brunswick Cobalt Rhino Urethane, pancake weight block with simple label layout. The ball measures over 80 hardness. It glues to the lane, rolls like a steam roller and hits like a tank on modern house shots. Higher hardness on urethane balls will not hurt their performance as JR demonstrated with the Buffalo which measures over 80 hardness. Resin balls or resin hybrids cannot duplicate the ball motion and performance of urethane. Urethane is good for very important reasons that cannot be taken away in modern designs: 1. Proper urethane doesn't flare allowing it to roll very early and retain incredible hitting power with a very strong cover. 2. The dynamics of a proper urethane core are very, very high RG and very low diff which increases hitting power by energy retention. 3. Urethane does not absorb oil, which is very good as it allows the pattern to sustain longer preventing the need to move off an ideal target line. 4. Urethane creates carrydown which is actually helpful for both resin bowlers and urethane bowlers in keeping the shot consistent and moves minimal. Once you take those four away with an oil absorbing coverstock with dynamic flaring core then you pretty much have lost all the benefits of urethane. At that point you are better off with a standard resin ball. You can always put an Axis Layout on a resin ball to calm it down and make it less jumpy in the back.

I agree with you that's why I'm going to keep both of my purple hammers
@Swish710
@Swish710 10 ай бұрын
Well it's a good thing this ball isn't urethane, isn't resin and isn't a resin hybrid then :D You're wrong about a couple of things though. You say proper urethane doesn't flare, but the material the cover is made from has zero impact on the ball flaring or not flaring. That's determined by the core inside the ball. For example, the Pink Widow urethane has the same cover the Purple Hammer does, but it flares a ton. Also, Urethane does not allow the pattern to sustain longer. It changes the pattern a lot, it just changes it differently than reactive resin. Reactive just sucks up the oil like a sponge. Urethane doesn't suck the oil up, but it moves it around a lot. It takes the oil from the fronts and deposits it on the backend as carrydown. That changes the pattern also - and in some ways more and worse. And whether carrydown is helpful is not something you can generalize for all bowlers. Some bowlers like it, but some don't. Some need the backends to hook and carrydown will make the pattern worse for those types of bowlers.

All balls carry down oil. The core and how a ball is drilled dictates flare potential. I have multiple high flaring urethanes with 1/4" to 1/2" ring separation 6" of wet flare and many rings the lower the rg.

@@travishanson166 Hot Cell, Black Widows and True Motion all flared a bunch with high flare layouts. But those urethane balls have high diff cores.
@nordattack
@nordattack 10 ай бұрын
@@Swish710 When I said proper urethane does not flare, I meant the design of the ball, core numbers. Low flare is a BIG benefit to uethane users. As to carrydown? On heavy volume sport shots, you bet carrydown occurs fast with no flare urethane, but on house shots, very, very little. Last two weeks in a row I used my Vintage 1993 Pancake Cobalt Rhino. Once I got lined up I never moved a millimeter for the whole series. No change in ball reaction at all. Just rolled it right in there smooth and easy.

My guess is that the NU Not Urethane is basically a "budget" reactive resin ball with a low hook rating. I think it's just a marketing gimmick to get you to buy a budget reactive ball for the price of a premium reactive resin ball. Very slick.
@Swish710
@Swish710 9 ай бұрын
Having thrown it now a couple of times, I would be shocked if it was. It doesn't have the same shape that budget reactive balls do, even when you add surface to them. It's definitely something a bit different.

Most do as a base, but I don't want to make any assumptions or generalizations without knowing for certain. I know a few balls that might not. And Hammer hasn't said what this actually is, so double reason to not assume anything (especially because of "Not Urethane" right on the ball).

@cozzi67 for "traditional urethane" I don't know, I'll need to re-read their rules. For "urethane-like" it doesn't matter. It can be zero. It only depends on how fast it absorbs oil, no matter what it is made from.
