As many of you know, this is the true story of our son Ben Schultz who was an Anchorage, Alaska firefighter/paramedic when, on June 5, 2017, (at age 28) he fell 95 feet down the aerial ladder truck during a training exercise. He suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI) and was not expected to live through the night. By the grace of God (and an amazing medical and therapy team) he did survive the night but was in a coma for some 2+ months and in recovery for nearly a year as he learned how to once again, talk, eat, walk, drive and more. This is the story of a TBI survivor. Through this video you will see Ben's one-year miraculous recovery journey condensed into 30 minutes of still and videos as he went through physical, occupational and speech therapies at Craig Hospital in Denver and Quality Living Inc. (QLI) in Omaha. At the end you'll hear from Ben as he talks about his life, recovery and next life challenges.
We post this video with grateful hearts to God for Ben's survival. To honor all those in the medical profession and the firefighter community who fought for Ben. And for the hundreds and hundreds of people who supported us through prayer, comments, gifts, food, advice, encouragement, a shoulder to cry on, listening and just being there for us.
Please write your comments below the video to show your support. If you can use assistance or encouragment with a TBI patient, feel free to contact us through: www.SchultzPhoto.com
Each member of our family of 4 has gone through a life altering tragedy. We wrote a book: SHATTERED DREAMS...Finding Hope in Tragedy. Read the intro and first chapter FREE here: www.schultzpho...

My husband had a fall from our house roof also hitting a long ladder on the way down. His right frontal lobe was smashed as he hit the cement below. He also had other injuries. He has two brain surgeries & was not expected to live. A month later he miraculously woke from his coma & went on to return to his teaching career!! Praise God for miracles in Ben’s recovery as well as my husbands🙏🙏

My husband is currently suffering from a severe TBI and is currently in comatose. It’s been a month and 6 days and on Monday he started following commands such as hand squeezing and nodding but not consistently. Still a huge step! They mentioned a shunt is needed and will probably get it done within the next few days. I was terrified to hear the news but your story is bringing me so much hope. He is 29 years old. Thank you so much for sharing. It gives me peace. God bless.

He looks completely normal from a passer by but his specific injury caused cognitive issues. He has no short term memory, though it is improving. His long term is jumbled as well as his timelines. He needs 24/7 care and having to stay with his father as I can’t care for him and out two kids but we see him very often. He will continue to get better. We were told the worst and he is miles away from where we imagined. This situation has been a nightmare but we are blessed.

Hello, Lily. So sorry to hear about your son's motorcycle accident and subsequent TBI. Day 34: Yes, I know that Ben was still in his coma on day 34. The drain you talk about, is it a v-shunt? It seemed to us that Ben's recovery really started after the v-shunt in his head was put in. I'm praying for you son, Lily! And the whole family. My 19 year old niece had this TBI with multiple organ and bone/soft tissue injuries. This was during a really bad time of covid. She contracted covid multiple times. She was taken to the Sheppard's Center in GA. She did okay for awhile but her body just couldn't handle it. After days of high fevers then a high of 106, she went home with Jesus. Just amazing! My daughter has asked me if I believe in God or science. My answer is both. I believe in us, an intelligent and ever learning and evolving species, who through education and desire to heal, uplift and change the world, can work to bring great recovery and change but I also believe in a higher power. One who looks over us and has a plan for us all. One who works through others to effect near miracles. I believe in the human spirit and it’s incredible will to beat the odds and of course our amazing bodies which we learn more and more about each day (science! Plasticity of the brain in the role of such an amazing recovery for Ben). Last but not least I believe in the power of love. It’s ability to lift us up and comfort us in our time of need. Family, friends and even a strangers offering of love can move metaphorical mountains. God bless you Ben, your family and the wonderful staff who know to never give up because there is always hope and possibility. Much love from Ireland 💚

Oh sure, @@bridgettedelgiacco450 no problem(if this was directed towards me as it was questioned off my comment🙂 For my many years recovering, I first at to recover at Craig Hospital before I was discharged. That consisted of occupational therapy, physical therapy, & speech therapy. I did puzzles there, which I am now not a fan of doing🙁💔, helped in kitchen there, did stuff in the gym, etc. Once I got home after being discharged I still need therapy so I was set up with having ILST come to my house to work with me. I was able to set the tone for things that I wanted to do and there were times that we went out shopping, baked cookies, did crafts, once went to a professional baseball game(the Colorado Rockies as I am Colorado), went out to eat, and likely many other things. At this time that is all I remember but if end up remembering some other things during my recovery I can try and remember to put them in😊

I am amazed at Ben's story, and the long difficult INCREDIBLE recovery. He has defied all odds, and being around him and his positive happy/demeanor does not add up given the circumstances. He worked his tail off to get to where he is now. However, he could not have done any of this without the support groups that started with the firemen/paramedics on the scene immediately after the accident, and the top medical staff(s) that guided him throughout the recovery process! All of that being said, the parents, Joan and Jeff, who were taken through a marathon meat grinder, are also true heroes here. They were challenged by 30 hours of work in every 24 hour day for months/years on end! Juggling Ben and his myriad of doctor's appointments and special needs, their daughter, Hanna, with her special needs, their careers (and heavy financial obligations that were increasing), sleep deprivation, relationship with each other, etc... They have truly climbed the mountain, seen the light, and I still can't believe how they got through all of it! I think that they incorporated some help from above, because that is the only thing that makes sense!

WOW!!! I just LOVE watching this young man's recovery. LOVE THE BELIEF, COMPASSION, PERSISTENT and POSITIVE CAREGIVERS around BEN's RECOVERY. Goes to show us NOT TO JUST GIVE UP ON THOSE that have had "BRAIN INJURIES" From his father's answered prayers. GOD ANSWERED HIS PRAYERS, by putting the right people around BEN'S RECOVERY MISSION. LOVE, GOOD CARE, and the proper THERAPY people can RECOVER from this. ALL those things only help in the healing of the HUMAN BODY. Unfortunately, most brain-injured patients don't get past 2 or 3 weeks. Over 95% of DOCTORS give up on those that come into the hospital with "BRAIN INJURIES." Happy for this young man : ) Good job, Ben, keep going kid, you got this.

What an amazing miracle. People don't realize how good they have it until they see things like this. We take so much for granted and complain about the stupidest things knowing we should be grateful we have a voice legs to walk can eat on our own Ben truly has gods loving hand on him and Angels around him seen and unseen. Blessing and Ben I hope you married had kids and are doing all the things you love. Prayers

My husband fall on the cement ground last Sunday September 11,and i remember that day was a day that happened on a twin tower bomb. And Tuesday evening we decided to let go for a brain operation,as they are going to take out of the blood clot.i was so happy when i saw him the first day after operation, because he can open his eyes and can move his body and saw him talking while on his life support. So i started to tell the brethren that the operation is successful.but the second day till today Saturday,he can't open his eyes.and seems that the doctor told me before that after the operation,he will be look like a rotten vegetable..i was so helpless, that's why trying to look a video like this, that there is who survive from that surgery..i thank God for the story of your parents Ben i am hoping that my husband would one day will be awake, and that God would intervene in our prayers..thank and God bless. Please pray for us that God will also touches the hearts of people to help us financially for the ICU hospital bill,it's really a big money, for people like us .

So inspiring to see ❤ ohne of my workmate was hitten with a Baseball bat right onto his head. He saw a few guys bothering a girl in a train station, and came over to help this girl. Then these guys hit him and ran away. In hospital, it was not sure if he can survive his severe brain injuries. A part of his scull is missing and the parts of his brain underneath was completely damaged. He survived the first days, but doctors told he would stay in a coma and maybe never wake up. But he did. Then doctors claimed, that he will never be able to walk or talk….but he recovered and is able to work fulltime again. Not in his old Job, because He has sometimes problems with his speech and with one hand and leg and some other things, but over all he lives a happy life, he married, he got his driving license back, and regained all memories. I wrote this down for anyone who prays for a loved one with brain injury. There is lots of hope, even if some doctors won‘t believe this ❤

He worked as a high school teacher we are from India living in a remote village far from easily accessible things not loosing hope, fighting to get him back just like Ben back , prayers to god to bless him to get back to his life JAI MAA TARA JAI MAA 🙏🌺 Looking forward to the same kind of miracles to be happened in my husband's life too ❤🙏 Thank you GOD Thank you UNIVERSE To the people please keep praying for my husband to recover and get back a healthy life 🙏❤️

About 6 months ago, I fell from a tall ladder in my backyard, while painting my house, alone. A neighbor dog heard my moans and/or smelled my blood, from behind my privacy fence, alerting her owner something was up. Rushed to a hospital that had better trauma care than my local one, my injuries were discovered and my treatment started. I had a severe TBI, brain bleeding, broken ribs, collapsed lung, multiple skull fractures (but they were closed and my pressure never required any brain surgery) and more injury to a "frozen shoulder" injury I had prior to my accident. (My family rushed to my side, from multiple states, for the next 7 weeks.) After about a week in ICU, I began slowly recovering, but did have fevers, pneumonia, and was unconscious - kept in a coma for a few days, and didn't respond to pain, or have any sight initially. Upon waking, I knew who I was, but didn't remember the accident, and my thinking wasn't always right, sometimes getting the year wrong, and never realizing how serious the accident had been, or was! But improving and stable, and not requiring any surgery, after 2 weeks in Hospital #1, I was transferred to a Rehab. Hospital, at which point I began forming memories and always felt recovered and ready to go home! But I had a slight double vision, and was kept there, where I was taught how to use a wheelchair (for the short period it was needed), move myself in the bed, balance and walk again. Once I regained my balance, I quickly became independent, and took and passed many puzzles, tests, and therapies, - like Occupational Therapy - proving I could cook, clean, do laundry and not be a danger when left alone, and Sight Therapy and tests, I was allowed to go home (still w/ my family), on my Bday! So I was (Inpatient) hospitalized 7 weeks total, then began months long Outpatient treatment, am riding my bicycle to the store, or use Uber Rides, and now live alone, wear glasses to correct my slight double vision, and am approaching 6 months since accident and a seizure, so the Neurologist appointment this week is expected to OK driving privileges. I feel, look, and sound normal, so I'm lucky to be alive and not in a vegetative coma. It's time to make a Will and Trust, and put my house in it, so my family can avoid the expensive Probate process when my time eventually comes, as it does for all of us.

Most of the patients I’ve taken care of live the rest of their days completely bed bound or wheelchair bound in a nursing home and barely progressing past the stage of broken sentences like Ben’s “Hi mom I love you” and swallowing food. The therapy he had access to was incredible, this recovery wouldn’t have happened without it - and without God designing the brain to be able to rebuild new neural pathways. I was absolutely dumbfounded as I watched Ben’s conversation at a regular consistent pace, pausing and continuing his thoughts without prompts, and he had complex facial expressions and brow wrinkling and smiles congruent with the emotion that he was expressing at each part of the sentence! I couldn’t believe it! I’d expected at the beginning of the video when it was said “living on his own” that he would be able to do basic ADLs but need to live in a home with staff to monitor and assist and drive him to appointments etc. Even if you as a family might feel discouraged at the testing results of things like multitasking and memory that were or still may be less than previous, please be encouraged from a stunned healthcare professional that the Lord has given you so many blessings through this world-class therapy that many people never ever regain in their entire lifetime!! Please Lord, bless and keep using this testimony of persevering with a suffering Savior.

Wow! your comment is very encouraging to us. We are thankful for Ben's recovery and thankful to God for bringing about such a joyful outcome. Your comment galvanizes for us the fact that Ben is blessed. So glad for God's intervention and all of the hard work put in by Ben and the hospital staff.

Amazing! My son is in the same situation right now...he was in a car accident in July this past summer. Unfortunately covid has taken its toll on hospitals and so its way different now...getting the proper care is almost impossible, I feel like the Dr.'s gave up on my son, that is, I don't believe they tried hard enough. He is at home with us, in a minimally conscious state...we are seeing progress, but it's all on my wife and I to help him in his care. We do have some care givers helping and an occupational therapist helping, but its really hard...
