Siphonophores are colonial jelly-like creatures made up of specialized segments that work together as one. They may not be familiar to most, but they’re abundant animals in the ocean. In fact, siphonophores are some of the most important predators in ocean ecosystems. Scientists have described some 175 siphonophore species. Most follow a similar body plan-a gas-filled float provides buoyancy, swimming bells propel the colony, and a central stem bears specialized parts for feeding, defense, and reproduction. From the surface to the seafloor, the ocean is home to many extraordinary siphonophores. These are some of the most stunning species we’ve encountered.
Featured in this video (name in order of appearance, plus depth and location information):

I sometimes fail to remember that I share a planet with these creatures, these alien-like life forms that go beyond anything I could've portrayed as extraordinary. I'm at a loss of words to describe how surreal it feels that these creatures exist, today, right here.

Siphonophores are one of my favourite creatures. They represent different societies (colony of smaller things serving their purpose) in one single being. One is good for propulsion, one is good for eating, defence, reproduction, sensing, and so on. They are basically personalities in living form.

I’ve just watched this video six times, and it wowed me each time through! To think that this sampling of Siphonophores-of which there are 175-doesn’t even scratch the surface, is very exciting! So many more to look forward to discovering… As for the beautiful blue one at the end of this video, it was a mere tease : We saw it only from above, and from too far away! I’ve subscribed, in order to make sure that I never miss one of your videos, Monterey Bay Aquarium ; especially of my favorite deep sea beauties! Late at night, when everything is still, they float through your home, ghostly and ethereal. Remember waking up with those strange burning scars last summer? Like a million burning strings wrapped around any skin exposed? The doctors said they couldn't identify the marks, but really they just couldn't understand how a jellyfish could have stung you in your home at night. They long to be held. They miss their home.
