Jellyfin is a program to organize your media. It's similar to Emby and Plex, but it's totally free... even the premium features are completely free. It has a great community and tons of plugins. So, it's what I use to organize movies, anime, shows, etc. It can do music and audiobooks as well.
The best part about this is that you can add several different metadata sources. For anime, I use Anidb, Anilist, and sometimes Kitsu. You can also add fanart.tv. imdb, VGMdb (for video game soundtracks) and a ton more.
Lastly, you can install an opensubtitles plugin that automagically downloads subs for your shows. Here's the links:

Jellyfin is such an impressive project. especially because the emby dude was kind of a dick and taunted the free software community with "oh you have no idea how much work it is" and then fucking blew his project away. Because turns out 10 people doing something together in the open is better than one guy doing something alone in secret

As a hardcore user of Plex, Jellyfin will more than likely be the longterm media server that I use if and when plex ever goes down the drain and goes all in on free tv/movie streaming and abandons their roots. But until then I'll keep riding the plex train until the wheels fall off.

Yeah, What kills it for me is the offline viewing, loose internet, it'll work for a day or 2 then its nope can't view your own content! The whole point of me setting up a media server is to have something to watch when the net goes down, and it happens often, country life ya know, So I do have Jellyfin running in a VM on my TrueNAS server just for that reason alone, If Jellyfin gets better or even if they introduce a pay model, I'd have no issues ditching Plex, the way Plex sets things up is a reason I wont support them, its like paying for a giant ad, since ya know it wont default to displaying what you have hosted, just further confuses some people.

I love Jellyfin. I've been using it for a couple years now in a Proxmox container. There are plenty of tutorials for setting up GPU passthrough to the Jellyfin container which honestly is the hardest part of the entire setup. Of course if you're not using virtualization, hardware acceleration practically works out of the box. Same for Intel's iGPU stuff. My only gripe with JF is that I wish their IPTV stuff worked a little better. There is no way to dedupe or manage iptv lists, you have to use something like xTeVe or TVHeadend to get that to work (or use a third party IPTV list editor). There also doesn't appear to be a buffer, so the streams are susceptible to jitter, drops, and freezes. xTeVe, which hasn't been updated in a couple years, helps a lot in this arena, but it also has its problems. But all-in-all, JF is the best media server out there, imo.

Thanks for pointing this out to me. Been using plex for a while and was unhappy about how inflexible it is. With Jellyfish is much easier to build my library how I want it rather than how the software wants it. Most importantly, I can keep my original folder structure and names and still have the software treat the data properly and correctly without having to do everything by hand.

Yea, I was looking through some old files, and found things like "plex theme" from the days when plex belonged to the user (buyer), and you could modify it's appearance amongst other customizations. All in all, Plex was there when nothing else was, so I'm happy to be using it for these past 10 years. It's inevitable for things to come along and take a fresh approach to a solution, so onward the journey continues.

@praetorxyn
@praetorxyn Жыл бұрын
@@PeterKocic It's very much worth it. You can stand up a Jellyfin instance alongside Plex and point it at the same media folders Plex is using, it maintains its own metadata database just like Plex does, so it won't mess up any of Plex's stuff. But IMO, Plex basically doesn't care about the "home media server" aspect anymore, they're solely focused on Plex TV, as they just aren't improving the home streaming aspect that got Plex to be the juggernaut it became. Jellyfin loads media faster, has better playback options, etc. Plex's only real advantage is ubiquity, and certain clients being better. Like... any Smart TV will have Plex on it but not necessarily Jellyfin, but if you use a dedicated streaming device like Shield Pro, AppleTV+, FireStick, Rokku, etc, that doesn't matter as Jellyfin is on all of them. But the Plex apps for iOS and Android seem to have better codec support than the Jellyfin ones, although for Jellyfin Infuse on iOS is great (even if it costs like $100 for a lifetime license... I don't have an AppleTV or I might buy it, as I don't like watching stuff from my phone or tablet anyway). But on a device that has full codec support like the Nvidia Shield Pro and with proper settings (e.g., the Jellyfin app on Android TV defaults to using an inferior player, so change it to libvlc which will Direct Play basically anything), Jellyfin runs circles around Plex IMO.

@@praetorxyn Plex's UI is customisable. But i guess it depends what you mean by customisable. For example with plex, you can change what appears on the home screen, i,e which library's appear and in which order you prefer. You can also add various suggestions of varying types and categories. So i would disagree with the statement that Plex isn't customisable at all. Also I dont know how often you last used Plex, but it is far from archaic. I have been just playing media files through vlc over a local network but windows default transfer protocols are getting worse with each update to the point where even increasing the buffer within vlc still led to stutter (jumbo frames enabled on the hardware side and all that jazz) and a fairly fat (bandwith) & fast local network. Gave this a try after your lastest video on it and its been great, no noticable loss of quality video wise. It will take a while to get it running how i like it, and it does wierd things like episodes of Father Ted (british/irish commedy) is named and displayed as an anime with a completely different name, something to problem solve anyway which is good for getting to know the software... Anyway rambling aside just wanted to say thanks for putting me onto this as i hate using paid for and closed software like plex, cheers dude!

Wrongly identified movies/shows can be avoided by naming movie/show files correctly. For example the Wicked City file should have been named "Wicked City (1987).mp4". This will then properly identify the movie. This is an issue with Doctor Who shows. anything pre-2005 can be in a folder named Doctor Who, then Series 01, Series 02, etc. But for 2005 and beyond, you need to put those in a folder named "Doctor Who (2005), then each season in it's own season folder named Season 01, Season 02, etc. I use Jellyfin with this naming structure and have no issues. I also use Emby, and use the same naming structure for that as well. Both servers softwares have extensive articles on their forums that explain how folder/file naming works.

With files becoming so much larger over the years, Im finally building a NAS. Im sick of my stuff being across different external drives and having to buy another drive to shove into my tower. Im just waiting until the rest of the parts to come in. Im guessing 44TB is going to cover me with Unraid. I have been looking at media server applications too since the tech has grown quite a bit since I was playing around with kodi 10 yrs ago. I am probably going to do the Jellyfin route since Im not interested in paying a subscription to watch MY own media. I have zero issues with donating or buying a reasonably priced lifetime license (did it with Launchbox and I was happy to do it). Plex has a lifetime option which feels a little to high for me, but the thing that turns me off now is how they treating the paid customers. Jellyfin it is.
@praetorxyn
@praetorxyn Жыл бұрын
If I didn't have a Plex license already I wouldn't buy one now. The only real advantage Plex has over Jellyfin is ubiquity. Basically every smart TV or smart TV device (e.g. Fire Stick, Roku, etc) is going to have a Plex app, but for example my LG C8 from 2019 does not have a Jellyfin app (but apparently the newer ones running webOS 6 do, and the older webOS 5 TVs like mine will have a Jellyfin app eventually, according to a July update). But if you have a client with proper Jellyfin support like the Nvidia Shield Pro, AppleTV+, etc. and you set it up properly, Jellyfin runs circles around Plex IMO. On the storage, it's probably a little late after 5 months, but it depends on how much of it gets cut into for redundancy. I run RAID 10 in my NAS for both redundancy and speed, and thus my 48 TB is cut down to about 22 TB usable, but I'm glad I did it as I had my first ever drive failure a month or two ago and was able to replace the drive and rebuild the storage pool with no data loss because of it.

You can bypass the online account issue in Windows 11 Home. During boot up, and at the connect to a network screen, 1. don't connect to any network, 2. use shift+F10 to bring up a command prompt and type the following: OOBE\BYPASSNRO (must be in caps). This will restart your system and allow you to install using a local account. Once the reboot is complete, you can skip connecting to a network and choose the sign in without a microsoft account option.

I'm not convinced. I'm a long-time Plex user. My setup is my media is on a NAS and Plex is on a small dedicated used Linux box. Media is served un-transcoded to everything in the house as they are all able to digest it natively. For the few times I serve outside the home my server hardware does include the appropriate CPU to do light transcoding. Some of the actions you were doing in the Jellyfin are trivial in Plex like changing the artwork or fixing a match. A couple of clicks and you're done. My biggest gripe is I have to manually upgrade the version of Plex. It's not easy or automated. But it's only 5 minutes or so. I'm already invested in a lifetime membership in Plex, but I'm sure a free version of a solid media platform is good for a lot of people. Thanks for the video.

Metadata gathering is autmoatic and easy. It has faults though. ISOs will not play. When I started my movie collection year ago, I used ISOs so that I got the menus and all of the extras. You have to load a different player that plays ISOs and set it as a player just for specific files. Another major annoyance is that they update the software a couple of times a year and then nothing works correctly for about a week. I will give this a try and see if I like it better.

I did a first time fresh install today, plus added the animedb, fanart, and open subtitles plugins but for some reason most of my tv shows have been renamed to anime titles, it looks like it tried to match the closest anime titles to the name of the show. Any ideas of what might have happened?

jellyfish android tv version lack the option to select sound/sub source b4 playing the video, which plex has, this ensure direct play instead of transcoding sound/sub for no reason but overall a good alternative to plex or emby q: is there anything like tautulli for jellyfin to monitor stats?

I've been researching and trying to understand Jellyfin for the past few months and I just can't seem to figure it out. I have about 300,000 music files on a Seagate terabyte external hard drive that's connected to my dell laptop, I would like to be able to access and play these files on my android phone when I'm away from home. will Jellyfin be able to do this?

Looks intuiging, but I purchased a PLEX lifetime pass years back, so no other fees - monthly or otherwise. I use it in/outside the home, via mobile, on my NAS, family has access, etc. - is there any reason to even look at Jellyfin in my case, as it doesn't seem likely...?

Does this "stream" media or does it play at the original quality? I use FTP + Kodi for years and it works great but this is much more pretty looking.

2:52 I use Jellyfin myself and I think it's amazing, but I would actually suggest the opposite given this scenario. Jellyfin is best used on a local network, and Plex is better for multiple users. Obviously, if you already have a Plex setup for personal use, there's little reason to change unless you absolutely despise the fact you need to use their auth servers or hate their ads (both of which I can't stand). You did mention that downloading files remotely is locked behind a paywall, so maybe that's another reason to switch, but Plex also has a massive advantage with their centralized auth and multitude of clients. An advantage which I hope will disappear as Jellyfin matures and gains wider adoption.

It works great remotely and I even have it mapped to a domain using ddns. Plus you get all the features so I much prefer it for remote connections.
@lyingriotman2220
@lyingriotman2220 2 жыл бұрын
@Tek Syndicate Yeah, admittedly I don't access it outside my LAN or have any remote users so I can't exactly comment on performance, though I assume it's fine (when your upload isn't 1.5mbps, lol). My comments on the best usecase (local vs. remote) mostly stem from the fact that Jellyfin's native clients vary wildly in development. Anecdotally, I haven't had many issues with Android TV, but the Roku and Firestick apps are missing many features and crash semi-frequently. The plugin for Kodi is more available and reliable, but the responsiveness and feel of the UI varies per device. As I said in my original comment, I hope that the state of Jellyfin's clients continue to improve because it seems to be the biggest obstacle to potential adopters. In the near future I doubt it'll be much of a contest, but for now it's very much decided on a case-by-case basis.
@teksyndicate
@teksyndicate 2 жыл бұрын
@@lyingriotman2220 I also prefer it for multiple users because they are easily managed from the admin panel... I can have tons of users... and they can access it from wherever... and they can have different perms and different folder access... and their recently played/resume list is unique. It's really handy for that.

I despise what Plex has become, because of money from the studios, and what it's eventually going to become. I didn't even know that they put personal media libraries behind a paywall now. I was recently setting up Plex clients for a few people, and it's just disgusting. A huge list of streaming services that can be integrated into it. Stupidity. It's already on a black box or smart TV that has those apps, so why add Plex as a layer in between? I found with one client that it was impossible to remove the free Plex content from the side menu. What's the point of me giving people access then if they can just watch it there? I despise their attitude, that people who paid for it aren't customers. If I need support for something I've paid for, I'm at the mercy of their attitude. I loathe their attitude towards file naming. It's geared towards the naming conventions of pirated content, but shhh about any of that. Mockingjay parts 1 and 2, gotta put a year behind those file names, or they WILL be joined into 1 entry. There is a timer, so if I want to fall asleep to a show, and have the sound keep me asleep, it's impossible. People have been asking for an option to disable it for years now, and nothing. Their attitude about transcoding and the formats they choose to use is insanity. No, don't stream AC3, when every device out there can actually play it. Randomly bounce around between AAC, MP3, and OPUS. Don't let me choose the audio format to transcode to. If you have interlaced content and can't directly play it, it turns into 30 progressive frames per second (or 25 for PAL). They don't bob de-interlace it to the full field rate. It's only a matter of time before they pull the plug on personal media altogether.

Depends how old your talking about. H.264 has been supported since the old HD 7000 series that came out a decade ago. and You'll need at least 300 card for H.265 transcoding. Expect for the current RX 6500XT, it does not have encoding enabled.

So jellyfin is a fork from emby so its essentially all features from emby at a certain point. When they decided to go close source the team split up. I get why you would want to go for jellyfin because of the privacy part. It’s just that maintaining and developing mobile apps that are good and on so many platforms is alot of work and prob not something a team can work on full time for free. These things cost money and take up time and resources. I know the mobile apps for emby sucked compared to plex for a very long time and only got good relativley recently. They might have been at a good point when they broke off and made jellyfin but eventually over time, i have a hard time beliving jellyfin will be better than emby feature wise and especially the mobile experience. If you dont care about good apps on other platforms but only using it in the web browser and the privacy part than jellyfin is good, + it’s free. If you want the best experience and most features choose emby.

I've ran into a problem with seasons. All the seasons going above 10 would have repeats of season 1 through 9. I figured out what the problem is. It's the numbering. Season folders being named season 1. That would cause duplicate. But if you name it season 01 The season then would not duplicate. I took the server offline to try it out. I have a way to rename folders in mass if you want to speed up folder renaming.

I like Plex and have used it for so long that I don't even consider it software so much as just a part of my life. I'm glad this project exists though because recently Plex has been adding a lot of.. "new features" let's call it, a lot of which have to do with ads, that I'm a little concerned about what the future holds. For now I am still a die hard Plex user, but if Plex treads a little too far down the ad rabbit hole, I'm thankful there is a good alternative to turn to.
