@@jenmurrayxo It came out when I was seven, but I don't think I saw it until I was maybe eleven. I was pretty excited back then, when I tinkered around and figured out how easy it was to hack into HBO on the cable box, although I could only get the picture in black and white on my TV. I saw LOTS of movies of which my parents would NOT have approved... although, to be bluntly honest, many of my friends had parents who let them watch worse and seemingly thought nothing of it. We didn't have internet, but kids weren't as sheltered as people these days might think.

"This movie is awesome because it contains the Muppets!" And Frank Oz, voice of Miss Piggy (among so many others) American Werewolf In London walks a razors edge of brilliant horror comedy, blending gruesome effects with some very subtle humor. The soundtrack is the biggest comedic element for me, all moon songs usually in stark contrast to the scene, as well as some of the dialogue - "a naked American man stole my 🎈..." 🤣🤣🤣 There is a mediocre sequel - An American Werewolf In Paris For some more great werewolf movies - Bad Moon, Silver Bullet, and Dog Soldiers

Fun Facts time!! So the village used as the location of East Proctor, isn’t actually in Yorkshire….but is in Wales. The attack on David & Jack was shot in the grounds of Windsor Castle. American Werewolf director, John Landis has a cameo….he’s the man who falls through the glass window / shop front during the chaos in Piccadilly Circus. Did you spot the cameo from Frank Oz….the voice of Yoda/Fozzy Bear/Cookie Monster etc etc? Two icons of British stage & Screen, who are greatly missed appear in the East Proctor pub / village scenes; Brian Glover (man who tells the joke about the Alamo) & Rik Mayall (Chess player who sprays beer everywhere). As someone who lives in the Yorkshire Dales, I can confirm that all our village pubs are like this…..only minus the Pentagrams. 😂😂😂

Great reaction, Jen. To me this is the best werewolf movie ever made. I love that you picked the make-up team as your MVP. Not just for Jack's rotting undead corpse, but also for the greatest transformation scene ever made in the movies. Rick Baker is the man responsible for the make-up effects, and I believe he won an Oscar for this movie. I understand that the ending is abrupt, but I think it's appropriate. This was David's story, no one else's, when he's killed, there's nothing more to tell. I also really love the scene where David's doctor goes to the village to do his own investigating. It shows that while the doctor may not believe in the werewolf theory, he is also not dismissive of the idea either. Most movies would have had all characters to not believe in anything like this, so it's refreshing to see someone actually looking into it.

"Can't they just shoot him?" Police in the UK (with the exception of Northern Ireland, where London isn't) famously do not carry guns in their normal duties. They instead have specially trained firearms officers, who are called to the scene if needed (similar to SWAT teams in the US). The common foot patrolmen we see first responding in Piccadilly Circus would be armed only with their batons and their radios (and their notepads, as Nicholas Angel would tell you).

I believe that the sex scenes are deliberate. That act and the violent attack are when people are most animal in their nature. A timeless classic and the definitive Werewolf movie in my opinion. Jenny Agutter is Stunning in this and Logans Run, she even had a cameo in Captain America Winter Soldier. What I really like about the story is how fast the action is after David transforms, only turns once more and the film is over which in a modern world and urban setting a true Monster would not be able to run loose and keep up it's reign of terror before being caught. This adds realism to the story.

The crucial thing is the speed of the attacks, and how fast the carnage escalates in Piccadilly Circus at the end. The sense of suddenness creates so much more shock value. And who does like seeing one of the lovely old Routemaster buses sliding sideways into cars and pedestrians? The Tube system did used to be much scarier and less safe at night. The system shuts around 11pm, so if it's that empty, you're on the last train of the night and the next station you get out will immediately be locked behind you. That's why there are Night Buses to take nightclubbers home instead of trains, which is another kind of scary.

When this film was made the level if animatronic complexity had never been attempted before. David Naughton (Character David Kessler) in the movie had to endure several days of shooting the transformation scene as he had to lay under a false floor with only his head and upper torso and arms protruding from the hole with the tops of his feet protruding further down as thick baker had to apply the prosthetics for the face in situ and the feet the same and piece by piece remove them and replace them with the next phase of transformation requiring Mr Nsughton to spend upto 14 hours a day in the specially constructed support sling under the false floor

Hi there Jen, there are two names in Hollywood that must be remembered when it comes to make-up and special effects design: Stan Winston and for this film, Rick Baker, who did a masterful job in make-up design. The gore detai on Jack is so realistic and the werewolf transformation is one of the top 10 best transformation moments in cinema history. Baker's career spans from 1971 to 2014, an unforgettable 43 years. I loved the moon-themed songs throughout the movie. The scene in the movie theater and the carnage at Piccadilly Circus are my favorite parts of the film. I also think that everyone can agree that the ending was the most abrupt and weirdest ending in any film out there. I'd like to toss in some suggestions for "Spooktober" season reactions. Feel free to toss them in a poll: "The Addams Family" (1991); "The Haunting" (1963); "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" (1956 or 1988 versions); "The Blob" (1988); "Creepshow" (1982); "A Nightmare on Elm Street" (1984); "Candyman" (1992); "Fright Night" (1985); "The Faculty" (1998), "Elvira, Mistress of the Dark" (1988); "The Howling" (1981); "Let the Right One In" (2008); "The Kiss" (1988); "The Conjuring" (2013) and "The Birds" (1963). I'm looking forward to what you have in store for us next month! I'm so glad that you got to see this classic masterpiece! 📽❤️

The reason for the Muppet Show bit on the TV screen was to connect the voice that may have sounded familiar from the earlier scene since the US embassy guy was played by Frank Oz the voice of Miss Piggy! That's always been the thing with John Landis' films. Even in a horror film. It's got alot of dark comedy.

Did you happen to notice at the end when Alex told werewolf David that she loved him, there was a faint glimmer of recognition and a mournful softening of his eyes for a moment? It makes the scene all the more sad and tragic. Thank Rick Baker's team for adding such small but important effects details to their creature animatronics. I love it when there is subtle humor and pathos included in even a horror film. You care about the characters all the more and it makes for a superior movie.

Perfect film. So, this film is an experiment. John Landis (who's work is mostly comedies), believed (rightfully so) that comedy and horror are two sides to the same coin. They have setups and punch-lines. This kind of tragic comedy-horror hadn't been explored like this before (and later became very popular with films like Evil Dead and such). It's also the story of Beauty and the Beast essentially, but in the "real world", Beast would be killed by men, and love alone wouldn't save such a creature (the end). It's a one of a kind film tbh. Some of the greatest in-camera FX ever filmed.

The opening of the movie is supposed to be somewhere in North Yorkshire but was filmed in Wales. Which shows that the film was written by an American with no sense of British geography as the doctor is able to get there and back from London in about a day - now this is possible to do, but you're talking a 5-hour drive without stopping one way and then back the same. That being said, this is one of the first horror films I saw when I was about 10 as it was shown on late-night TV and I'd snuck downstairs to watch it.

Another great reaction, Jen, thank you. It's a classic film with great practical effects, other great Werewolf films are: 'Wolf' with Jack Nicholson, 'Dog Soldiers' with Sean Pertwee, 'The Wolfman' 2010 film, and 'Silver Bullet', 'The Howling' and 'Ginger Snaps' are good also. Jenny Agutter the Nurse and love interest in this is an excellent British actress who started in the business as a child and who is still acting to this day, a great film of hers to react to is, 'Logan's Run' which also stars Michael York, it's a classic Sci-Fi film which I'm sure that you'll enjoy.

@@Adam_Le-Roi_Davis. If you're up and about, I would like to send 1 more remark. American Werewolf in London, spawned many Werewolf films. Due to the effects (Rick Baker) 'The Howling ' and have you ever heard of the film 'Wolfen ' both also had fantastic effects as well. Like 'Jaws ' that also had many different films that tried to repeat the success of that summer blockbuster. Did you see the reply to you, I made earlier this evening? Hi Jen, First time I've seen any of your videos - SO entertaining! I'm an actor and it stuck me while watching this how close knit the acting profession is. Brian (the chap who tells the joke with the bald head!) was a close family friend. He was a lovely man, Funny, entertaining, with so many stories about his time both as an actor and a wrestler. I think he would have been delighted that you enjoyed this film so much. The guy he was playing chess with (Rik Mayall) was in the first TV job I did in the profession and I was at drama school with Alan Ford (the taxi driver towards the end!) Such a small world! Good luck here and I look forward to watching more of your reactions. Si

This movie was a game changer in movie makeup and SFX. Remember this was 1981, so all if the effects are practical. No CGI. There is another scary movie I think you'd like: The Forbidden Planet. From 1956. It has what looks like CGI but as it's 1956 of course it's not CGI. Instead artists painted the "CGY directly to the film, by hand. Also, it stars Leslie Neilson in a dramatic role. He always wanted to play in a comedy but he was type cased for drama and could not get a comedic role until Airplane! in 1980. The Forbidden planet is an adaptation of The Tempest so in a way it's Shakespearian.
