EVERYTHING about this movie is hilarious. Trey and Matt said that making this was so difficult, that another will never be made. And that makes me sad because I love this film SO much. There are so many levels to comedy here. There's the low-brow comedy on the surface, and then there's the subtle humor that they don't always address, or shine the light on. It's a brilliant commentary on "American Patriotism" and "'Murica" as well.
@hellomark1

Oh man, the trivia for this movie is almost as hilarious as the movie itself! The very first fight, the puppeteers were making it look too good, Trey and Matt wanted it to look dumb, they were like "just bang them together." They ended up doing it themselves and broke the puppets :) Also Matt Damon's puppet baked wrong, and at first they were like "we can't use this, it looks brain damaged!" which is why they just have him saying his name over and over again.

Team America's general style (including puppetry style) was based on the early series by Gerry Anderson, who relied on a technique called "supermarionation." He's best known for Thunderbirds. I discovered him during the 2000's through my public library's videotape collection of Captain Scarlet. My kids and I loved watching it together for the irony value. I'm pretty sure, though, that Anderson took it seriously as an art form.

I grew up with the Supermarionettes shows like The Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet, etc(syndication of course)., and when I saw the South Park guys were making a movie using marionettes, I knew it would be comedy gold. As part of the fun of watching those shows was how the marionettes would move and interact with one another. The walking alone always brought a smile to my face, sadly due to cost, time and effort, this is a lost artform, but you can see here what is possible and how great the final product can be. F**K Yeah!

The puppeteers were able to make the walking realistic but they were told to make it looks like this so it would be more funny. I enjoyed this movie a lot. You are absolutely correct that the creators of South Park, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, also created this movie. I actually personally met one of the real-life individuals that the creators loosely based one member of Team America on, specifically Joe Smith (the blond jock), who was described by Trey and Matt as being "a former starting quarterback at the University of Nebraska". The only former (as of 2004) starting quarterback at the University of Nebraska who matched Joe's appearance was one Scott Frost, who started at the position in 1996-1997, and later returned for an unsuccessful stint as head coach at Nebraska. I happened to meet him at a youth event a few years before the movie was made. Other fun trivia related to the movie includes that the actors who were parodied in the film had a wide range of reactions to it. Sean Penn was extremely butthurt about the parody, and actually wrote a letter to Trey and Matt about how angry he was, ending with "F--- You!" At the other end of the spectrum, Alec Baldwin thought the idea was funny and even offered to voice the parody version of himself for the film (an offer Trey and Matt turned down). In a "making of" feature that was included with the original DVD release, Trey and Matt said that their dream for the movie was for the song "I'm So Ronery" to win an Academy Award for "Best Original Song" and for the real Kim Jong Il to perform the song at the awards ceremony, a dream that sadly never came true...

You should definitely watch South Park! The movie, South Park Bigger, Longer, and Uncut is a GREAT place to start. Trey Parker and Matt Stone have written all of their movies together they are hysterical as a writing pair. Trey Parker is arguably the true powerhouse of the two though as he has directed all of the movies they have written and he also does ALL of the music and lyrics for their movies including this one and South Park. He was big theatre nerd growing up, LOVES Broadway musicals with Les Miserables being his favorite. If you pay attention their are references to it in almost all of their work.

They said that with Matt Damon, they were not really planning on having him only say his name. But when they did it once they just thought it was really funny. The actor was asked recently in a Reddit AMA what he thought about his 'appearance' in the movie, and it seems he was a bit confused by it. "I was always kind of bewildered by Team America, I think because it’s hard for us to understand what our images are in public, I think we’re not good judges of that, and when I saw myself on screen just only able to say my own name and not really that well, I kind of wondered “Wow, is that how people perceive me?" "At that point I just kind of was like, I’m a screenwriter and an actor, and like really? I can barely say my own name? So I was always bewildered by that, and I never talked to Trey and Matt about that. And Incidentally, I believe those two are geniuses, and I don’t use that word lightly. I think they are absolute geniuses, and what they’ve done is awesome and I’m a big fan of theirs, but I never quite understood that one. But I will say this. Those of us who were parodied in that video were parodied because we were against the Iraq war, and we went on the record against that war, and so history is on my side not theirs." He was a lot more upbeat about the cameo a couple years ago however when he said the following. "I thought it was brilliant! I mean, I never understood it, and then I heard an interview with them and they said the puppet came in looking kind of mentally deficient and they didn’t have time to change it, so they just made me someone who could really only say his own name. All the comedy they’re doing is really next-level stuff. Also, I liked being included as a person who was against the Iraq war." Hmm..."

"MERICA f**k yeah!" Couldn't believe the South Parkers got this done. Yes, dear Jen, there are behind the scenes videos out there. Several on KZfaq, and I'm guessing on the DVD. I haven't watched a dang one. There are some puppetry wizardry things around. The ones I remember most were Rankin and Bass stop motion. RUDOLPH THE RED NOSE REINDEER, LITTLE DRUMMER BOY, SANTA CLAUSE IS COMING TO TOWN. Can you see a pattern here? There must be a bazillion Holliday related things. One of my favorites is MAD MONSTER PARTY? But I think either Rankin or Bass didn't participate. It's a mad scientist thing with Boris Karloff and Phyllis Diller in the cast. Puppet movies? Gremlins, Labyrinth, Dark Crystal, Small Soldiers, Child's Play, loads of Muppet things. Then there's the Marionettes. My favorites wre the Fireball xl5 and Thunderbirds. They, like most string related puppetry, were tv series. But it seems every few years someone or something tries to hook us with 'splosions 'n sh*t. Great watching. Hug the beasties.

If you're curious as to why Matt Damon only says his name is because the two creators originally had dialog for the character. But, when Matt Stone and Trey Parker saw the puppet, they said that the puppet looked mentally deficient, so they instead replaced all the dialog and for him to say "Matt Damon".

I saw this movie when it came out back in the day. My friend my brother and I were laughing so hard our stomachs were hurting. Tho this movie was advertised as not being for children and made by the guys who did South Park an older woman brought her grandchildren to see it. They lasted only 20 mins into the movie before they left in a huff. It was hilarious. This soundtrack is amazing and one of the few movie soundtracks that I went right out and bought after seeing the movie. Love your reactions Jen ❤❤❤

One of the best comedies ever. Not only funny as hell, there's a lot of truth (more or less) hidden underneath the jokes an silliness. Plus no matter what country, what political, social, religious (...) opinions, everybody get's roasted equally. Brilliant.

That's the glorious thing about Parker and Stone, something they share with other cinematic comic colossi like Mel Brooks, the Jim Abrahams/Zucker brothers team, and the old Warner Brothers cartoons. They're equal-opportunity offenders! 😄

I'm sure someone already mentioned it but the dvd has behind the scenes shirts. Buy the unrated version. Some actors laugh and are cool with being mocked while some get bent out of shape over it, just like with South Park.

You probably didn't notice that the paving stones in Paris were little croissants or that the buildings in North Korea were Chinese take away containers, or that the palm trees in Panama were marijuana leaves. It's the little details that add another level to the humour. And yes, the movie was made by Matt Stone and Trey Parker from South Park... F**K Yeah!! Dirka dirks jihad Mohammed,🤣🤣

Here in Britain film posters have certificates on them to say what age they are appropriate for. The certificate it shows will also say why it is such. This was a fifteen, which means absolutely nobody under fifteen allowed. And the explanation was 'contains *** nudity strong language violence and gore. All involving puppets.' I laughed my head off when I read that. I recall seeing a tv ad for it also, which went out before 9pm. We can only have adult stuff on tv after then. So the line 'Team America has once again ******d off the entire world' somehow became 'hacked off...'. Which reminds me of seeing an ad for a certain Tarantino movie in 2009, which just said the title was 'INglorious.'.

Matttt Damonnnn. Apparently, out of all the dolls they had made Damon's came in looking a little extra special. And the guys just rolled with it 🤣 PS. You should do the South Park movie. But have fun with the censors. They went ham with the vulgar speech.

You mentioned celebrity reaction, Matt Damon said he was confused but later thought it was great, Hans Blix (the UN guy eaten by sharks) thought it was hilarious, George Clooney said he would have been offended NOT to have been in there (he was actually a voice in the South Park movie, playing a surgeon, in reference to his part in ER), and even Alec Baldwin said he found it funny. On the other hand, Sean Penn was absolutely furious (to the point that he sent an angry letter to Matt and Trey).

Another funny aspect, was when they first made the puppets, you couldn't see the strings on the filming, so they insisted on thicker strings so that they could see them.

In the commentary to this movie, the South Park guys talk about one of the options for making this film was to get the script of the Day.After Tomorrow make it in puppet form. And then release it on the day after the day after tomorrow was released and call the movie "The Day After The Day After Tomorrow" They ultimately made this movie which is an excellent movie

Ben Affleck and Matt Damon were some of the first people to welcome Trey Parker and Matt Stone to Hollywood when they were coming up. They’ve been long-time supporters and boosters of the South Park creators, and they not only gave their blessing to be parodied and lampooned, they wouldn’t have had it any other way.

Jen, as others have mentioned, this is a homage/ parody of the '60's British series Thunderbirds. They also did two films, Thunderbirds Are Go, and Thunderbird 6, They both are a fun watch, On a completely different note. A great stop-motion that is a drama us called Anomalisa. Highly rated but underappreciated,

Hi Jen!🙂Trey Parker & Matt Stone from South Park said they would never make another puppet film again. There is an unrated version of this film, that contains like 30 seconds more of puppet sex.😄 That is not a joke. I don't think there are any behind the scenes stuff on the bluray. They make fun of Matt Damon on South Park too, where he just says his name. There is no particular reason, other than being funny. The 270 puppets for the film were made by the Chiodo Bros. They also made "Killer Klowns from Outer Space" (1988). While it is a silly 80s movie, the clown designs a very impressive. Great reactions to this well made puppet film, Jen!!!🎬👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

My favorite Matt Stone and Trey Parker moments (the South Park guys) is a toss up between them showing up to the Oscars for the South Park movie tripping on acid and dressed in drag, and their commentary track for their pre-South Park movie ‘Cannibal: The Musical’ where they just leave the recording booth to go buy beer and it’s totally silent for like twenty minutes and then they’re drunk for the rest of it. Classy guys.
