Almost no one is reacting to a movie like this, so kudos that you will make this reaction your own. Reacting to very well known movies is easy, but reacting to an oddity like this is way more interesting. Congrats.

There's a story behind this movie. Casino Royale was the first Bond novel by Ian Fleming. He sold the rights to a movie studio that did nothing with them. He wrote the 2nd Bond novel called Dr No, and sold the rights to a different studio. This started the Bond franchise as we know it, setting the tone with Sean Connery etc. The success of the actual Bond movies made the OG Casino Royale rights holders want to cash in, but they only had the rights to that one novel. They didn't have the rights to any interpretation of the characters etc. Many years later, and the owners of the actual Bond franchise bought the rights to Casino Royale, which became the Daniel Craig version from 2008. This is an oddball. It's VERY 60's. It's one of those "it's so bad, it's good".....or a hot mess.

Seeing Jen react to this bizarre 60s absurdity now has me wondering what she would think if she ever watched Barbarella.

David Niven, who stars as the retired James Bond served in the British Army prior to WW2, resigned his commission and had a few starring roles in Hollywood before returning to England with the start of WW2 despite being warned to stay in Hollywood. In England he rejoined the army and was recommissioned as a lieutenant in the Rifle Brigade (Prince Consort's Own) before transferring to the British Commandos, the origin of all modern special forces. He served through out the war taking part in the Allied invasion of Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge. He finished the war a lieutenant-colonel before returned to Hollywood as an actor.

This was REALLY the first "Austin Powers." It's weird because it's a train wreck you can't miss. The individual performances and the music carry it well enough to survive the movie and one ends up just appreciating the comedic buffoonery.

My dad, an old Connery purist, LOVES this movie and had me watch it when I was probably too young to get it. While I definitely see how it doesn't coalesce very well, there are a lot of individual bits I still love and that soundtrack is immaculate. To this day, I still use the "Very low threshold of death" bit as my warm-up for doing Allen-esque voices.

The Peter Sellers portion of the movie - which was never finished - is very loosely based on the novel, so you may see points of similarity with the Craig movie.

I have to be honest, I love this movie. But, it's definitely an acquired taste. That said, love it or hate it, this film gave us the song "The Look of Love". That alone makes it worthwhile 😉

Jen, we all love you for enduring this part of the Bond detour. But I think you'll really enjoy the second Austin Powers film. Can't wait for that one.

Somewhere in the background, Number 6 is just facepalming at such ridiculous measures happening throughout the movie. However, regardless of the production chaos, all the actors bring their game to this whimsical movie! One of those rare movies you’ll never get these days!

David Niven might have been the Archetype for James Bond. His military service includes time as a Commando during WW2. Indeed, Bond author Ian Fleming had Niven as his first choice for the role.

This movie is proof that you can't solve every problem just by throwing more money at it. I definitely enjoy a few individual pieces of it, but as a whole, it is indeed the hottest and messiest of hot messes.

I think the important thing here, imo, is that you stuck it out like a soldier and positively handled it like a boss 🍻 Oh yeah, the "not a fan" warning in the opening is something I hope will become a trend for all reactors ☺️

The ending if this ironically reminds me of Kubrick's original idea for ending Dr Strangelove with a pie-fight. I feel like Kubrick ultimately made the right decision.

Daniel Craig's Casino Royale is a masterpiece next to this unofficial parody. Actually this book or script was supposed to be the first movie of the saga, but the 007 producers didn't have the rights and it took years to get it, that's why the official movie took so many years to be made and it was only possible in 2006. That's why Casino Royale is like the origin of 007, it shows how he becomes the agent he is and how he gets his license to kill.

Along with being a noted actor and director, Orson Welles was also known as a talented magician.

10/10 The film that inspired 'No Time To Die' Warning: Spoilers When Daniel Craig's final 007 movie was released last year, It struck me as being remarkably similar to this 1967 all-star spoof. Here's the evidence; both movies begin with Bond in retirement and another 007 in his place. In both movies, an American is responsible for getting Bond back into action. In both movies, Bond has a daughter ( even their names are similar ). And both movies end with Bond apparently being killed in an explosion. Future film historians will find it hard to believe that the 1967 film was made first as it looks like a spoof of the Craig movie. The only thing we don't get in the latter is the SMERSH flying saucer. 'Casino Royale' frequently gets bashed for not taking 007 seriously. Which was the intention. How can you have a spy who wears a tuxedo, drinks Martinis, and drives a sports car? So the film makers decided to have some fun with the character. Just as Eon later did with the Roger Moore Bonds. Quite right too. There's a lot to enjoy in this movie, from David Niven's dignified take on Bond, and Peter Sellers as the gambler hired to take Bond's place. Burt Bacharach's music, fun action scenes, and Michael Stringer's amazing sets. Humourless Fleming fans really need to put away their hated of this movie and enjoy it for what it is - a product of its time, when Bond-mania ruled the world. An era we are never likely to see again.

Of note, it does have an all-star cast, music composed by Burt Bacharach (my favorite being the main title by Herb Alpert and The Tijuana Brass, not to mention The Look Of Love, sung by Dusty Springfield). The original soundtrack vinyl pressings are sought after by audiophiles and collectors as the original studio master tapes were damaged. Debra Kerr was in Black Narcissus and David Niven and Cantinflas were in Michael Todd's Around The World In 80 Days. {)

A very fun and silly movie. But the music is great. And then there was Peter Sellers' on-screen relationship with Ursula Andress. So, don't forget it was the sixties...you had to be there.

There was a blank in the gun and the burning gunpowder and shreds of the blank hit me directly in the face. First I thought I had actually been shot, and when I realised it had been a blank I thought I had been blinded. My face looked like a shower spout of pin pricks leaking blood. Everyone on the set could see that I had dozens of tiny wounds. Of course I dropped the bottle of champagne on my foot as well."

This is definitely a love it/hate it movie. I love it. Especially the music. The astonishing thing is how close the story is to the book. My favorite line is when Vesper asks Evelyn, "Isn't that a girl's name?" he responds, "No, it's mine!"

Casino Royale 67 really has to grow on you, unfortunately. I did not enjoy it on my first watch either, but now really enjoy the multiple Bonds, Ursula Andress (Honey Rider), and poking fun at Bond's cliches (womanizing, gadgets, murder, etc). Peter Sellers shouting "More!" to Orson Welles' ridiculous magic show will always make me laugh.

The beginning of this movie presents a theory I had of James Bond since I was a little kid: that there were multiple James Bond’s. Through the decades new agents took on the role of 007 and therefore the name James Bond. As a sort of infamy title

This was during the time of a TV show called 'Laugh In' that had similar humor. There were other movies as well in the time that had similar humor.

Orson Wells apparently insisted on the magic being in this film. It is weird, wacky but not very satisfying to watch. I think all the behind the scenes drama, change of directors, people being fired is far more interesting than the actual film, which is also the case with Never Say Never Again.

The 1960s were crazy times

I remember trying to watch this about 30 years ago. I gave up about half way through and never tried to watch it again.

It's practically an unwritten law in popular entertainment: anything new and successful breeds imitators... not to mention parodies. And they had the rights to an actual James Bond novel. They probably thought, "Hey, Broccoli and Saltzman won't let us make a real Bond movie... what the hell *ELSE* are we gonna do with it?!"

For an exhaustive and exhaustively funny breakdown of this film I recommend episode 46 of a podcast called Kill James Bond. It's extremely NSFW but they dig into every insane detail particularly how Seliers was a great actor but a total a#"hole.

Orson Welles and Peter Sellers hated each other to the point where the card-playing scene had to be filmed with each actor separately and merged later. Orson had some skill with stage magic and insisted he be given a chance to display it. It all came to a head after Peter began bragging that a member of the royal family was coming to see him on the set, (I want to say it was Princess Caroline) and when the day arrived, she walked right past him and straight to Orson Wells, as they were friends from childhood.

There is a behind the scenes interview with Val Guest, one of the directors of this movie, in which he discusses all the onset drama and shambles that went into producing it.

Glad you gave equal attention to this whacky version of a Bond film. It was a typical goofy, zany and frivolous romp, very much of its time. For a sorta/kinda similar but better film, see What’s New, Pussycat, featuring some of the actors from this film (no spoilers) and others, a guaranteed enjoyable watch. I've never seen this movie but if Jen is watching it I will go along for the ride. I won't do that for any other reactors. The sets in the Berlin sequence seem to be a nod to the German expressionist cinema of the 1920's.

Jen, you're a trooper for suffering through this. All the credit in the world to you. As I understand it, the reason Orson Welles did so much magic was because he liked magic in real life, so insisted on doing it in the movie. And Peter Sellers was very superstitious, so he didn't like it.

This film has ten movie stars in it whose prospects were in decline when they decided to do this one. I can name for you ten truly classic films that each one of these actors starred in that you absolutely should watch. This movie also has the greatest number of actors who actually appeared in real Bond films.

Nice job catching the connection between the song and Austin Powers. Mike Myers said film Austin Powers was partially inspired by "The Look of Love". He said hearing the song on the radio led to him reminiscing about the 1960s, which helped inspire the movie.

You've now seen why this doesn't have the greatest reputation among Bond fans i give you credit for sticking it out.

I was 6 when I first saw this and I loved it. Great soundtrack totally absurd now, but then just visually funny. Don't let the main James Bond, actor David Niven's portrayal influence you in any way about him as an actor. He made some truly classic movies. One being my number one film of all time. A Matter of Life and Death. And as you've stepped into the spy movie genre. I'd like to suggest you try The Ipcress File (1965) starring Michael Caine. Who you met before as Alfred in the Dark Knight trilogy.

The way the movie is using sight gags in the background makes me think it was ahead of its time. Airplane and The Naked Gun movies did that to, but that was many years later.

The 1954 version of Casino Royale that aired on Climax! as a TV special is the closest version you get to the book. ...but I do love the silliness of this.

This movie is pure insanity. You could almost make a movie ABOUT the movie and all the batsh*t things that went on with production. "O.K. Connery" is probably the only other "James Bond" film that has this beat in the crazy department.

This is such a weird, muddled movie. The three impressive things about it are the "Look of Love" song, the theme song and introducing Woody Allen to the movie world. I always imagine everyone making this film was drunk, high, or both most of the time. It's the only explanation.

The stutter they gave Niven’s James Bond was very subtle sense of humor…retired and not the person he once was. Comes out of retirement to become the man he was.

Also, it's hard to see John Houston without thinking of Chinatown. Prob the most loathesome characted in all of cinema.

James Bond has to play Le Chifre at cards and defeat him, Le Chifre kidnaps Vesper. Bond is tied to a chair and tortured. - it's the same base plot as the novel and the Craig version. The execution is somewhat different though. :) Peter Sellers was sacked after the introduction of the car chase - you'll notice an abrupt jump in the film where the car chase should be.

Okay, this seems to be the one kinda funny thing: When Lord Bond's daughter goes to Germany the following scenes are shot in the Expressionist style of early German silent movies, in particular "The Cabinet of Dr. Calligari".

Love this wackiness. It is just so ridiculous. The older I get and the more of the absurdity of the world I see, the more I think this is the most accurate of the Bond movies

Jenny Penny I guess they can't all be winners lol. The only thing I really liked about this movie was Woody Allen. Thankfully Daniel Craig's Casino Royale is Bond-Tastic, easily a top 5 all time Bond movie in my humble opinion. Keep up the awesome job Jen, you always bring your "A" game.

That askew/Escheresque set seems very similar to the nightmarish sets used in the antique horror classic, "The Cabinet of Dr. Caliari", so much so that I suppose this may have been directly inspired by it.

Hi Jen! I love your determination to see all the Bond films, even the outliers like this Casino Royale. Ian Fleming (in the 1950s) wanted either David Niven or Cary Grant (North by North West) to play Bond. The James Bond movies inspired a load of mocking imitators in the UK, starting with The Beatles Help! (McCartney bought an Aston Martin right after Goldfinger) and including Modesty Blaise (Monica Vitti as a female Bond and the gorgeous Terence Stamp as her Bond Boy) and, funniest of all Otley with Tom Courtney as a hapless London chancer mistaken for a Bond. Len Deighton's The Ipcress File (written as a reaction to the flamboyant, glamorous focus of Fleming) focussed on low-level everyday spy work in London with Michael Caine as an anti-Bond hoping to earn a little extra so he can buy a car as he travels by bus, as we see! The Spy Who Came in From The Cold (Richard Burton) was an anti-spy movie based on authentic experience. All very Sixties movies as is Bond.

I always found it funny that they had David Niven as the straight-edge original Bond, as he was well-known for living an extremely hedonistic lifestyle in his younger days. He appears in many far better films than this one; Dawn Patrol, A Matter of Life and Death and The Guns of Navarone are personal favourites.

Sellers was the one who wanted to play it straight before he left the film. And Sellers hated Welles.

I was a teenager when I saw this but I remember only the mansion blowing up and the song "The Look of Love."

A crazy mess of a film,multiple directors, dozens of well known faces,silly plot (especially towards end when they seem to be making up things as they go along),Sellers character just disappears for reason you said and he felt out with Orson Welles abd they were shot separately for scenes they had together in the casino...abd that's just the start.Very,very 60s...I love it!!.Peter O'Toole's cameo is a link to another silly 60s film-Whats New Pussycat?-when O'Toole has a similar exchange with Richard Burton...many of the film's familiar faces your probably too young to recognise (unlike me!)🎩

Jen, as a historical side-note, when this movie was made Dr. No, From Russia With Love, Goldfinger & Thunderball had been released, You Only Live Twice came out the same year as Casino Royale; then the franchise made the mistake of replacing Sean Connery w/George Lazenby for On Her Majesty's Secret Service. Then they decided Sean had greater sex appeal & recast him in Diamonds Are Forever and then retiring him for good and casting Roger Moore in Live & Let Die. As in so many other things, consistency in the late '60s was a thing of the past. Hence the chaos. A lot of the movies from the late '60s were just as vapid.

The final song starts with “Seven James Bonds”, and it’s funny that you watched this right now. There have been seven actors that have played James Bond.

I consider myself an Uber fan of the James Bond franchise but will freely admit that I haven't ever really tried to sit thru this entire film as it is just too painful. Jen, you are a brave person for taking this particular ride. I love (most of) the early James Bond movies, but this one I watched exactly once.

Perhaps a documentary about how this train-wreck of a movie ever got made would be more interesting than the product itself, but I'm not sure I would be interested in seeing that one either.

The music is definitely the best thing about this movie. It was written by Burt Bacharach, who also makes a cameo appearance as himself in "Austin Powers". And, silly as it is, this film is still arguably more entertaining than any of the "Matt Helm" films from the same era - which were unintentionally cheesy and wanted to be taken seriously. Not an issue with "Casino Royale". And I disagree that "it doesn't make a whole lot of sense". Actually it doesn't make any.
