Initially, Eli had already recorded Jose’s part and there was a different lead to be featured. But Covid flared up and that lead wasn’t able to fly in for the recording. So Jose agreed to step in to sing Eli’s part and Eli stepped into the lead. And did a remarkable job. (Those years singing with a rock band served him well!)

@@lkayh It was someone that they have said in the past that they wanted to work with. Hopefully, they will still get that chance later on. That’s really interesting to know, it explains so much as to why Jose had such a small amount of solo time in the song as compared to other features, so thank you (however…. I feel Eli’s metal vocals really make this song so glad it went this way)

girl, you can post 10 VP videos a day and you won't hear us complain one bit!!! VP is like a candy store for vocal coaches and musicians who have knowledge within music and arrangements, as VP never ever goes the simplest route with their music. there is SO much to unpack, more than you could possibly pick up on from just one listen. hearing what musically knowledgeable people think of VP is always great fun. and hey, you're not doing reactions because you are forced to, you do it because you love it. and if reacting to VP makes you happy, what better excuse than that would you need?? 😉

I love that heartbeat rhythm towards the end-I assume Geoff was thinking of the whole Davy Jones’ heart theme. Reading the comment from Wildecat101, I’m actually so glad they couldn’t record with the original lead here, so we got to see Eli do this. So much respect for everything he did here! And compare his vocal timbre here vs. Little Mermaid and some others-not only is he going full rocker, but there’s something so soothing about his voice in LM, and here, he’s got that hard edge that so fits the character. All of these guys can adjust their voices to varying degrees for different roles but he’s really very chameleon-like, both vocally and as an actor. Speaking of acting-I love the crazy looks on Layne’s face, too. He had a lot of fun with it. This is the song where it hit me how much these guys had invested in upping their game with the videos. The quality here, in every single aspect from the staging and costumes and lighting to the vocals to the acting to… you name it. Everything was just so tight and excellent. Anyway, excellent reaction/analysis! I’m glad you got around to this. And there can NEVER be too much Voiceplay. (I forget, have you done Geoff’s Ain’t No Sunshine yet?). Oh, and I just heard Peter Barber say The Bass Gang is about to drop some new stuff. If you haven’t checked out any of their work yet, get ready!

One of the things I love about KZfaq is the enormous variety of "reactors" that I can check out to widen my appreciation of the music videos I love. This is probably my 30th "review" of Hoist the Colors, and what each of you focus on is so different I always come away with just a little bit MORE. I love your professional understanding of the voices and who's doing what. Something that's rarely commented on more than perfunctorily is the actual theatrics. Some videos more than others, obviously, but, even though they are seated throughout this particular one, I find myself watching José rather closely as he begins to prepare for that sword thrust overhead, along with the return to station afterward. His movements are so precise and flowing, and so carefully pre-plotted, so he has the sword in hand and ready at exactly the right moment, followed by the extravagant throat-slicing movement, and then meticulous repositioning back to point-down, hands on pommel. It's beautiful, and I love watching it. Especially because I know how this kind of video would require multiple takes and retakes, and yet watching it doesn't give off any feeling of discontinuity. Craftsmanship.

This was the first one VP did that broke reacters. So complex and captivating. Fun facts: Geoff has a "scar" on his arm that says VP, and when they were setting the scene up he and Eli were singing SpongeBob Squarepants. I just love how they give you something so theatrical and emotionally charged when you know that earlier in the day they were playing around. LOL Their new one coming out is another leap for them and will blow your mind. Awesome brand new guest star too.

I reckon there's a definite pattern to becoming able to focus on their individual voices: 1. Initially, "Oh my gosh! That bass! Geoff is amazing!" 2. Soon after, "Wait a minute, I forgot that's beatboxing! Layne is incredible!" 3. Some time later, "How did I ignore Eli's voice so long? Be still my heart!" After that you come to your senses and can choose to focus on whoever you want.

What do bacon, chocolate, and VoicePlay have in common? There is no such thing as too much. Glad you finally did this one. Every reactor I've seen has been rendered speechless at some point during this song, this incredible performance. Eli lets his rock tenor out to play, Geoff does an amazing slide from the basement up to rock tenor, Layne with his awesome percussion and crazy eyes joining on the Yo Ho bass line... So much attention to detail. Geoff even has a pirate brand on his right forearm, only it's VP instead of P for pirate. Jose fit in perfectly. He and Cesar performed together in high school. And to get in the spirit, in the BTS video Geoff walks into the studio carrying a trunk, one of the set pieces, singing the SpongeBob theme in two different voices for the call and answer. I look forward to your reactions. You always hit just the right balance between appreciation and analysis.

This is some of Voiceplay's best work. Their performance here encompasses more than just the vocals. As you mentioned as well it's the lighting and overall design of the costumes and the whole package. Geoff's 3-octave slide really caught me by surprise the first time I heard it. 5:15 There's another, more technical reason for staying on an open, more 'neutral' vowel: it's because he's singing that F1 in his subharmonic register and transitioning to a brighter vowel (like "ee" or "eh") would considerably alter the harmonic content of the sound. It happens always but more so with subs since the technique is extremely delicate and the higher octave note (here an F2) as well as its overtones are still very much present. The vowel "ah" has this amazing property that it's close enough to an "oh" in terms of mouth shape for the two to be interchangeable when you use subharmonics... and "oh" is the ideal vowel to sing a sub (because it's technically a natural, adjustable semi-occluded vocal tract position). The only position from which it would be easier to produce a sub would be complete mouth closure. That's where most of us begin when learning the technique, actually 😄 Once you understand how subharmonics work, you'll begin to notice that Geoff doesn't choose when to use them haphazardly. In that regard too, he's a master of his craft. I mean, there is a reason we call him the *King of Subharmonics* 😄

Layne does a bunch of singing in this as well. The whole beginning, up to the point when Jennifer imitated the percussion, and then that "yo ho" section that start with just Tim he comes it before the others do. I agree that it's awesome to hear him singing though. He's so amazing with the vocal percussion that I sometimes forget just how great a singer he is.

Layne blows my mind. All of them are so talented and have such musical gifts, but Layne is mind blowing. I cannot believe all the beats, rythms, sounds coming from that man's throat, mouth, lips. He can literally sound like crashing thymbals.

In that initial low part, I think it's also worth noting that Geoff does sing the "i" vowel in "high" ("hoist the colors high") which leads the ear to expect the rhyme in "die" and not get tripped up by him sustaining the "da" sound.

I’d be so glad if you recorded several VoicePlay reactions per week even. So you won’t hear (read) any complaints from me! Favourite group + Favourite Reactor/Vocal Expert = Happy!! 😁 If you’re curious you could, not as a reaction but for fun, check out “Eli kills Superstition on The Bitter End” on VoicePlay’s channel. It’s one of the earlier videos there. After a VoicePlay gig, Eli goes on stage and jams with the house band. Unplanned, and the sound quality isn’t the best, but it’s still fun!

The phrase "too much VoicePlay" is completely without meaning. Like "non-slarkish futzpahs" or "colorless green ideas". Also, yes, Hoist the Colours is my favorite VoicePlay video so far. Oogie Boogie Song is not far behind. You would probably appreciate their Little Mermaid medley, If I Were a Rich Man/Girl, and Phantom of the Opera. Phantom is quite old (before Tony left) and in my opinion, it's the first one they ever did that was really really good. Save You're A Mean One Mr. Grinch for December.

I just realized upon seeing that you were just doing "Hoist the Colors" that you have yet to do "My Mother Told Me" also featuring Jose Rosario Jr., or at least it didn't show when I checked your reactions for Voiceplay. You must do "My Mother Told Me" next. Not only do the two, shall we say, compliment each other, but--actually if I were to say more I would be giving away spoilers.
