Since most people have never seen the show, I'll try to give a little context to some of his choices. Mostly just to appreciate Geoff's brilliance: he's playing four different characters from the same notoriously powerful and scheming family, the Lannisters. Their symbol is the lion and they are very rich and typically known as ruthless. Also all blonde. The only main character that's a lannister he's not included here is the Queen of Westeros for obvious reasons. The song is kind of their theme song, about a family that stood up to them and refused to acknowledge them as lords (the Rains) that now... no longer exist. They had them wiped out. 'Main' Geoff is the father, the money behind the throne. Far left is his dwarf son who's actually the cleverest and ends up in league with a different queen, far right in leather is his other son, the soldier, and the queen's twin brother - who is missing his right hand, which is why Geoff is mysteriously not moving that hand. And in the red silk is the queen's son, Joffrey, who essentially shares space with Umbridge as one of the most hated fictional characters ever. So while only two of them sits upon the throne directly, they all are grappling for power behind the scenes somewhere. They all hold influence somewhere regardless of who's in power.

As I said above, the first four season are among the best TV ever produced. After that it kinda... isn't. I rewatched the earlier seasons over and over back when the show was good. After season six I'd stopped rewatching any of it. It wasn't bad TV, it had just fallen so terribly far down to mediocre. After season eight I can't even find any happy feelings about the show. It is, sadly, skippable.

That's the beauty of subharmonics: if the principle of the subharmonic is within your tessitura, the sub is going to be powerful, as well. I have heard Geoff do E1's and D1's live and it will rattle your soul.
@iizvullok
@iizvullok 10 ай бұрын
Depends. To me personally subharmonics on the absolute bottom notes are much much easier than in mid range. Others struggle with subs on their low end. Everyone has their sweet spot and a spot where it just does not want to work.
@johndeeregreen4592
@johndeeregreen4592 10 ай бұрын
@@iizvullok, Geoff is able to do something I have never been able to, so, yeah, you are sort of right. He can hit subharmonics above where he can also hit chest notes of the same pitch. My chest range extends down to D#1 and can hit a G1 in chest with ease... I cannot do a subharmonic there. Whereas, I have heard Geoff use subharmonics for quick octave drops well into the middle of his bass chest range... just for the sake of doing an octave drop fast and accurately. This is what makes Geoff so special and versatile... he is able to pull off techniques others can do... just not in the same manner he uses them to increase his versatility.

@@johndeeregreen4592 In my case B0 and C1 are my only reliable notes on an average day (in subs of course). C1 is usually also by far the loudest. My subs can be okay up to F1 or so and lose a lot of quality on F#1 already. My G1 and G#1 suck. Thats bad because my chest range usually only goes down to A1.
@johndeeregreen4592
@johndeeregreen4592 10 ай бұрын
@@iizvullok, I tend to be able to do F#0 to B0 subs with ease, while a C1 is pretty tough. I think this is partially because I hit an odd resonance at C2... I had a major sinus surgery 15 years ago and my chest range got MUCH louder from C2-A2, as a result... it also improved my upper range, where B4 is now in my chest range... when it wasn't, um, be for :D G4 used to be my top chest note.

I'm a rabid fantasy fan for many (many) decades now - but I simply could NOT get into GoT. I tried to read the first book and literally stopped after a few pages. Grim. Oh, how grim. So I'm with you on never having watched the show, though I've seen enough clips and read enough comments to at least know what the song is about. And I do remember how outraged the fans were at the end of the show, at how badly they handled the conclusion. Which isn't entirely the show's fault - George Martin has STILL not written the "official" conclusion to the series. His last book in the series was published 10 years ago and since then fans have pretty much given up hope. Robert Jordan at least had the excuse of DYING before he completed his series, "Wheel of Time." And did leave instructions for the author who was given the task of bringing it home. Geoff took what was apparently a fragmentary song from the show (online info says that bits of it are played here and there throughout the shows, in addition to being the title of the "Red Wedding" episode) and wrote out a complete arrangement that is really satisfying. Peter Barber (bass singer) is a fan of the show so knew what he was listening to and pointed out that the section that begins at 9:56 in your video is totally NOT a part of the original song, but he said was clearly inspired by several of the composer's use of "driving force" music (I'm having trouble picking my words here). So, even more kudos to Geoff.

It's so fun when you're flummoxed! LOL! You're not alone; I've never watched GoT either. Too violent for me. Still appreciate this song from it, and have learned enough to know this song is about destroying your enemy. The (oversimplified) reason there's no one to hear the rain at Castamere Hall is because the guys singing this song killed 'em all. I love how this song stays low, true to the original, with Geoff's spin on the characters and rhythm. We expect awesome vocals from Geoff and attention to detail, like the "Jaime" on the far right doesn't move his right hand -- which had to be hard for a guy who can't sing or talk without moving his hands -- because the character's hand has been cut off. It's some kind of prosthetic in the glove. (My only quibble is that he should have moved the sword to the other side, considering Jaime is left-handed.) But this one goes to new levels of sophistication in video editing. Took 12 costume changes to get all the shots, all the angles. It's been a while between solo releases from Geoff because VoicePlay has been so busy. They have some really fun minis out and more to come, plus a full length video with a familiar guest singer coming soon. It makes me want to hug Cesar as much as I did Geoff in Ain't No Sunshine. Kathy hinted that they have something fun planned for Geoff's birthday later this month.

I’ll put it this way, Geoff’s cover of The Rains of Castamere perfectly encapsulates the song, its undertones and the history behind it, as well as how it portrays Tywin and House Lannister in Game of Thrones and A Song of Ice and Fire. It’s a song a terror, it was written and commissioned to intimidate and put fear into the hearts of men - “When dealing with rebellious vassals, some lords would send an army, my father Tywin would send a singer” - Jaime Lannister. The song describes the brutal crushing of a rebellion and the annihilation of an entire family. Put simply, Geoff is perfect for this song!

Don't fret, you're not alone - I've never watched Game of Thrones either, but I can tell you Geoff is representing some the the Lannister clan. On the Iron Throne is Lord Tywin Lannister. From left to right, the other characters are Tyrion (his second son, played by Peter Dinklage in the show), Joffrey Baratheon, Tywin's grandson, who becomes king, and Jamie Lannister, Tywin's elder son. Interestingly, we all know how Geoff "hand sings" and you'll notice "Jamie" doesn't use his right hand. This is because the character lost his hand in the course of the story. Got to love Geoff's attention to detail!

Not exactly. He’s dressed as different members of House Lannister. The song was written after the head of the house slaughtered a whole offshoot of his house as a warning.

I don't know game of thrones either nor any other likeness of that category!!!! So --- Don't feel bad :). But ... what Geoff does is nothing short of amazing, he's worked very hard to get to where he is; has turned out very entertaining/pleasing. Be Safe

I went to look up the pronunciation of Castamere, but it was in British, so it was like "Costemii"

I have not watched any of GoT either, and really, it is not featured in my future plans. You need not apologize. Those lows, Jenn! You're getting down to a rumbling earthquake, too!

I have watched the game of thrones show. The last season was not very good. I had no idea that this song was from the show. Now i know why the throne looked familiar. Hope no one gives you grief for not watching it.

Regarding GoT, I've only seen the first season and a little bit of the second myself, because I was watching it with my gf (sort of) at the time, then she broke up... Never watched any more...
