How old are you lmao I was dressing like this in the early 90s thru highschool too and if you were alive and grown enough to understand and still remember the world then, you won't ever get it and shouldn't speak on it. The only thing you people should be saying is wow we've come so far. We did stuff like this when NO ONE had ever seen it before EVER first EVER this is nothing vs the trans or whatever you can think of today that would offend old people, the trans accepted today and even hated today wouldn't believe what it was like for the trans community in the 80s and before. The 90s opened the world up to alt culture and these people are seeing it for the first time. This is HISTORY SHOW SOME RESPECT SMH instead of hating these people, MOST OF THEM ARE PRO EVERYTHING TODAY BECAUSE OF THIS!!!!! THE BIKER DAD WAS BORN IN 1930!!!!!! It was a different time! You're witnessing these people's first EVER experience seeing these types of styles and people! Jesus Christ these comments make my head want to explode YOU GUYS ARE ALL SOOOOO IGNORANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

+Eleanor Partridge this is a change in generations. I was around that age then, this is just how it was. This is why people my age get so annoyed at the 'anti bullying' stuff we see today. We learned to cope so can this generation. It is part of growing up, and becoming comfortable with who you are. Bullying is wrong but If you can't find a way to deal with it, you will likely conform into behaving and looking like everyone else even though you don't feel like everyone else. Thats why we delt with it and as a result we learned to mature, and grow, and genuinely not care what was thought of us. all these kids have jobs, are responding maturely and are living responsibly. this is why it was allowed on tv,, this is why the outrage of being judged or shamed for any reason needs to stop. Shaming is wrong, but Not growing up and just being yourself and learning to cope with mean people is worse. (sorry if this is written weird i had a few drinks)

This was so common in the 90s. I grew up watching these with my mom, and we always thought the guests looked just fine. I had a mom who let me experiment with hair color and clothes. She trusted me to work through things and express myself. The audience disgusts me.

+Eleanor Partridge Mmmm I guess you're really young? This was a THING in the 90s, all people volunteered, and the teens loved to show off their fashions even if they didn't smile and pretended to hate it. Crazy fashion (much crazier than this) was a thing in the 90s and many parents didn't like it. Not a big shock. My sister used to be a freak. When the minimum wage was $4.25 she'd regularly spend a couple hundred dollars on day trips to NYC to buy custom-made Marilyn Manson-esque goth clothing. Obviously my parents weren't thrilled. Instead of saving $ for life after HS, she was blowing it all on clothes.

Ikr? I remember when I used to watch these shows, parents always lament on how they lost their little boy or girl on account that they became teenagers! It's not really about their teenage children dressing differently. The root of it is that the parents would rather have their kids stay little children forever than face them becoming adults.

True, and I don't condone that. However these mothers are just psychopaths. To be worried about your daughter joining a gang is normal. However publicly bullying her on a TV show is a load of horse shit. If you have a problem with your kid have a serious sit down with her and address it. Don't publically humiliate her in front of a live audience. All that will do is get her more upset, and continue with what she was doing in the first place.

Max Kanaszka I believe that mother was trying her best. My brother was lost to street violence in 98’ and just about a month before, my mom signed up for one of these types of shows, with (in her eyes) no other option (being a single mom of 3 boys and having already tried everything in the book). Gangs are absolutely serious, and insanely dangerous. My younger brother and I had to be extremely careful about how we acted and what we said growing up, because one wrong move and we’re dragged into a situation similar to the one our big brother was in. I was raised by an active addict so I go to a group meeting for adult kids of dysfunctional families... and one of the people who goes literally is there bc their parents went on a show like this and the topic was “having a kid (meaning the person I know) ruined our sex life” (yes really)... this person got so bullied about it... not only would no ones parents let their kid hang out w them, bc obviously all the other parents thought they were freaks... but even like legit any friend they made before their parents went on the show didn’t want to be associated w them anymore, bc who wants to be friends with the person who’s known as being from the freak family... or friends w the kid who’s parents “don’t have sex anymore” bc of their existence? So this kid legit never had a friend bc of their parents decision to go on one half hour long show when they were like 9. I met her when she was around 23-25 and she was having SERIOUS struggles still bc obviously if you never trusted anyone or had a friend til 18 you wouldn’t just move out of your parents house and suddenly be normal. Life is so hard for her because of one selfish decision to go on a tv show like this. Anyway I thought it was interesting to see how something like this really destroyed someone and they weren’t even on the show...

Custer Custer The girl in the g@ng was bullied least. Are you joking? One of the kids- a literal 15 year old kid- was called “white tr@sh” (KZfaq is being super weird about replies that have “trigger words” cause it thinks I’m being mean to you) by an adult man bc she had shaved hair and black clothes.... if you’re triggered by the word “bu//ying” like I am, then let’s just call it cruel... Character building: You deserve better than a life where you’re giving people an excuse to make fun of you just because you think they will anyway. You’re better than that. And anyone who makes fun of you is just as insecure as you, don’t let them use you to make themselves feel better. You deserve to feel good too. Cruel: Change your clothes. You look like white tr@sh. This girl probably got called that for the next four years Of Hs.... bc of a grown man.

People talk about how bad reality tv is currently but this show, Maury and jerry springer has been around for thirty years and is absolute trash! I will be honest, as a parent I would probably be concerned and not want my kid to dress that way, but I wouldn’t allow people to put her down because that is total bs. I like Cheryls mom, she seems to be genuinely concerned for her as opposed to being judgmental and I think Cheryl understands that, I am glad that her mom defended her since that person was totally out of line to be so mean and rude. I think it’s so rude when an adult pulls the holier than thou card over a teen just because they are an adult, not ok.

I just don’t understand how a mother can ever say her daughter scares her simply because she looks different. It makes me sick that any of these parents would allow their children to be belittled and bullied this way. If someone even looks at my son wrong I’m all over them. I personally will be proud when my Rex expresses exactly who he is. The 90s were horrible for people who fought against the main stream

But it doesn't make sense though. People were going unconventional in the 1960s and 1970s. One would think that by the 1990s, this would have been acceptable.

THIS is why alternative was rare back in the 1900's and early 2000's. not because alt is ''trendy'' now but because there is more acceptance and material available for people to actually express their true selves. i don't think that i as a metalhead would've had half the chance to listen to the music i like or dress how i want because of how heavily i would've been discriminated back then

They're dull, idiotic people that nobody pays attention to..... so instead of developing a personality, they dress in some stupid, over-the-top way to get attention. PEOPLE LIKE THIS NEED TO BE TALKED DOWN TO!!! THEY NEED TO BE MADE FUN OF, OR THEY WILL NEVER GROW OUT OF IT AND DRESS LIKE HUMAN BEINGS. Dressing like this means no worth-while job will hire you.... nobody will see past the stupid shit you're wearing. IF YOU HAVE A REAL PERSONALITY, YOU WOULDN'T NEED A 'LOOK' TO DEFINE YOU. get out of here with this weak ass shit. REMEMBER: MAKING FUN OF GOTH, EMO, AND PEOPLE THAT DRESS OVER-THE-TOP IS DOING THEM A GREAT FAVOR! MAKE FUN OF THEM AS HARD AS YOU CAN IN HOPES THAT THEY WILL REALIZE THEY'RE GOING NOWHERE IN LIFE.

Delta Echo Alpha Delta I get what they’re saying. They mean that she could have prevented it by not being in that environment, dressing like that and going for a smoke at a bar. What business does a 14 year old have to do being at a bar??? Now, the parents should be on top of all of that or that wouldn’t be happening but at the end of the day, accountability lies within the people themselves and we have to examine where things went wrong. Nobody said it was right of her dad’s friend to do what he did, it’s just what it is. He liked what he saw and she even said she was sexually active and liked dressing that way for attention. You can’t pick and choose who you get the attention from, ya get what ya get.

Frankly, the audience was horrible and no one should ever say those god awful things to anyone. I get that they have opinions but sometimes “THEIR” opinions don’t matter. Yes it is hurting someone. Themselves, by dropping out of school. That’s the only “hurt” that they are doing besides to their parents being sad about who they are and what they are doing. The only two that I’m genuinely concerned for is the girl who wears gang colors/clothing, because that was really dangerous. People who are in gangs take that really serious, and the sexually active 14 year old. The show was not the right place to try and “help” their daughters.

It doesn't affect my work life or anything really So you do you boo, you'll figure it out one day, just keep your head high and thoughts straight. If the music and look helps you through the bs that life throws in your way then keep at it. Times have changed quite a lot since my peak years and various alternative looks are more acceptable in todays society, there will always be people who judge, people who give you weird looks, people who silently admire you and the rare occasion when someone takes the courage to compliment you. It was just the mindset back in the 90's. Bad I know, but it's how people thought back then. Though I've also found that the tables have turned in society nowadays and if you're perceived as "normal" in any way you're now considered a piece of garbage by the more radical alternative crowd. Kind of sad considering how some of the people who didn't want to be made fun of back then became what they hated and are just as prejudiced as their old oppressors.
@noebodi1920
@noebodi1920 8 жыл бұрын
Who does that? No one except people *online*. Snobby idiots online don't count. They are too cowardly to even dress like that in real life (or else they are rich hipsters, so who cares what they think, anyway? They were going to be snobs no matter what they wear...) In reality, "alternative" people are very accepting of others and there is no dress code to get along. As long as you're respectful, you're cool. :)

You gotta love those 90s makeover shows. This was 27 years ago, I was a young adult then and went through many phases in my youth, but only got criticism from my peers. Once an elderly woman told me how in the 60s she shaved off her hair and drew pink flowers on her bald head with lipstick. She told me, "every decade will see change in one's personal style, soon so many changes will happen that people will just come to accept one's individually one day". I'll never forget that because it's true. We've come a long way from this moment.
