Jenny visits the monument to The Hertfordshire Regiment, and talks about her Grandad's World War 1 history. We follow on with a visit to Tyne Cot Cemetery, the largest Commonwealth Graves Commission site in the world.
Charles Chapman (1892-1965)
I have been investigating for ages where my Grandad was captured during WW1. He was a private in the Hertfordshire Regiment and joined in 1915.
Last year I discovered he was wounded and captured at The Third Battle of Ypres/Ieper on 31st July 1917 when nearly 75% of the other ranks were either killed, wounded or captured. 132 were missing of which one was my grandad Charles Chapman.
I have now found the German records (trying to translate some of the words) but what we have found is:
1. He was wounded and captured near Ypres/Ieper on 31st July 1917.
2. He was taken to a military hospital in Roesalare (Roulers) Belgium as he had a shrapnel wound in his left leg (can confirm he still suffered from that when I knew him).
3. He was taken to a POW camp in LIMBURG in November 1917.
Tyne Cot Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery and Memorial to the Missing is a Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) burial ground for the dead of the First World War in the Ypres Salient on the Western Front. It is the largest cemetery for Commonwealth forces in the world, for any war. The cemetery and its surrounding memorial are located outside of Passchendale, near Zonnebeke in Belgium.
The name "Tyne Cot" is said to come from the Northumberland Fusiliers, seeing a resemblance between the many German concrete pill boxes on this site and typical Tyneside workers' cottages (Tyne cots). (Wikipedia)

Thanks so much folks ....my late dad was a dessert rat,ww2, ramc, called up x mum didn't hear from him for 4 years bar the odd note ! He never spoke about the war except his hate of baked beans 😄and the fact they were issued with wooden guns as from the air it looked like a fully loaded army !! Hence my sister was born soon after his return 👍 What the war did for dad was to carry on and become senior chief nursing officer for the royal collage of nursing and a psychiodrist. Mum was a TB nursing sister x my sister x I reached ward sister statis. What the 1st x 2nd war solders went through was unimaginable. ......thank you for reminding us all bob x jenny 💞👍

We (Kirriemuir Heritage Trust) have just completed the 4th Exhibition documenting WW1 on the home front in out little town of Kirriemuir. Of the then population of some 2,000, 212 men & boys were killed in WW1 and countless injured. Terrible times, we have a lot to be grateful for. Thanks for the VD the timing is very appropriate as the centenary of the Armistice approaches.

My grandfather, Private Harold Martin, from Bishops Stortford, was wounded that day too. I was privileged to attend the unveiling of the memorial, 100 years to the minute that the Hertfordshires went into action. It was followed by a battlefield tour that was incredibly emotional. At one point we stopped at the point where the battalion advanced to that morning. The guide began by showing a large photo of Grandad and read from his memoir. (supplied by Herts At War) I was shocked because I didn't know that he would be talking about him. I had to walk 20 yards into the field where grandad was wounded that day. The guide was told by some others in the group that I was Pte Martin's grandson. He didn't know that I was in the group! Probably the most powerful moment of my life!

Very emotional day to reflex the past and what might or may not have been. Pity all these politicians do not remember what was, they could all do with visiting war graves to see how their decisions are crucial to decide all of our futures ? I have been having trouble with the you tube app, have deleted and reloaded twice, now I seem to have the comments and the bell icon working again ! Have you heard of anybody else having trouble with the notifications and comments ?
