May of 1999

This brings back lots of memories. I attended the tapings of the 1999 Jeopardy College Championship in "Chicago". The tapings itself were actually in or around February of 1999. I still have my audience tickets in a file box somewhere and I'd have to find them to get the exact dates. Technically, this was taped outside of Chicago in Rosemont, Illinois but I guess nobody would need to know that. I have to say the tapings of this championship had the most energy of any game show taping I've ever attended. Johnny Gilbert truly "ran the show". While standing in the middle of the stage, he read the slate. Then he got the audience cheering. He remained in the middle of the stage getting the audience louder and when he felt it was right, he told the control room to cue the open and he would say "From Chicago, This is the 1999 Jeopardy! College Championship!" into his handheld mic while quickly walking back to his announcer podium. During that pause, he'd quickly sit in his chair, and start reading "Now entering the Rosemont Theater... (and so on)" from his script. Nowhere else have I've seen a game show announcer actually announce while walking across the stage. A total pro. Sad to read that Carolyn Cracraft had passed away.. The crowd went wild when she won the championship.

From Chicago, It’s College Week On Jeopardy!

At the time Jeopardy went to Chicago aka the Windy City for their College Championship back in 1999, that was also when Wheel went to Philadelphia for 2 weeks as well. So both of these game shows created by Merv did road shows in May 1999!
