If you want to find vintage and cool musical gear, you have to act fast. The problem is that work schedules and life can get in the way.
I tried to buy this Mandolin but was beat to it by a friend from down the road. He called me and told me he bought it and I asked right away if I could come play it and make a video.
He used a couple simple tricks to find it and buy it right...1. He had facebook marketplace notifications so he saw it immediately when it was posted. 2. he showed up quickly and with cash. 3. He knew exactly what it should be and the price was fair, he didn't have to negotiate.

Man... that sucks when a friend does that! But that’s cool that you had joy for your friend and went to check it out.

Great video Jeremy! I don’t play mandolin, but have been curious about it for the last few years. Looks like a beautiful instrument and sounds it too. That’s really unfortunate that you lost out on it, but still super cool that you were able to see it in person and play it. The guy who bought it seems like a nice guy but he literally stole it out from under you! Lol. Keep the videos coming bud!

I have a Flatiron A 5 it built myself when I worked there at the factory in the early '90s. It was part of a luthiery class we all had the opportunity to take part in if we wanted. The cost to us was just under $250 for materials and hardware, which gave us all a fine mando, retailing about $1250. I still have it and play it at jams and at home when learning new tunes, etc. A friend of mine that made one also said he sold his while in Japan, and pretty much wished he had not done so. Those mandos from that era were real good instruments. Then they (Gibson company) closed down our shop, moved it to Nashville, eventually selling the name to a Chinese bunch. Quality really suffered, but if you can find one made before '95, you should have a decent mandolin. If well taken care of, you should have everything to make your music play well and enjoyable. Cheers, Bob

Thought maybe this could be my old Flatiron. I bought one from a fellow in Waynesboro a couple years ago. Had it maybe 6 months and sold it back to a different guy from Waynesboro. It was like a 2000 or 01 I think. Imported. But for the money it was pretty decent. Think I sold it for $600. I have a 2015 F-9 that I replaced it with. I will probably end up selling it and buying some thing else. I think I have a instrument problem. Maybe not as bad a you Jeremy, lol. EE

Why do you think this is a American Nashville made Flatiron? It sure looks to be the imported version, the neck/ headstock bindings and label are key differences.

Astor Williams I suspected it was an import. I didn’t see it until a friend found it. Didn’t want to burst his bubble. He’s gong to keep it forever. It sounded and played like an American made F style. I’m not very well versed in mandolins. What do you think of it?

I have a Flat iron Artist Signed by Bruce Weber. I also have a Weber top of the range Fern (F) The Flatiron is a better instrument. I wouldn't worry about losing out on a Festival it's about as good as a Sigma Guitar as compared to a Martin.

I bought my Flat iron in the 90s from mandolin brothers sight unseen, shipped over here to the Uk. It cost around $1,330 or so. At the time Flat Iron were made in the Gibson Factory. I was advised not to buy a Gibson as the Flat Iron were better. Then Gibson wanted their Mandolin builders to move to another factory. The Flat Iron section stayed and set up in a new factory down the road some where, and thats when Weber was born. There is money in buying new instruments My Weber Fern, top of their range cost me £3,300 or so, I only could afford one because I sold a house and had a bunch of cash left over. This was 13 or so years ago. The same model cost well over £7,000. Such is life.

What a pity, like. Now one of your best friends, like. I just kind of, like can't believe it. You could have like straight away, like sold this instrument on, like for 4 time the price and like, made a huge profit. Good luck Jeremy, like. I am sure like, you will find like other desperate people, strapped for cash, eager to feed their families. Well done to your friend, like, also!

Sorry if I offended you. Buyer set the price and was happy with the deal. My friend paid a fair price from a buyer that was ready to sell, not strapped for cash. No one was desperate and no one was cruel or predatory. Please assume the best of people and our intentions. Thanks for watching.
