If you're a partner of a nurse, student, or any other professional, whether male or female, this video is tailored just for you!
Drawing from our own life experiences in New Zealand over a decade, we'll dive into the various job options you can pursue and detail the requirements needed to secure these positions. From understanding the job market to tips on meeting the necessary qualifications, we've got you covered.
Introduction
In this video, we aim to provide comprehensive information and practical advice for Malayalis who are moving to New Zealand on a dependent visa. Whether you are accompanying a nurse, a student, or any other professional, this video will offer valuable insights into the job market and the opportunities available to you.
Current Job Market Scenario
Before we dive into the job opportunities, it's important to address the current situation in New Zealand. The financial landscape is not as favorable as it once was. Many people are struggling to find jobs, and it can take anywhere from 3 to 6 months to secure a position. We want to provide a realistic picture so you can be better prepared for the challenges ahead.
Common Jobs Among Malayalis in New Zealand
1. **Caregiving and Aged Care**: Given the growing demand for aged care services, many find opportunities in this sector. Basic caregiving certification might be required, but it's a rewarding field with steady demand.
2. **Hospitality Jobs**: Working in cafes, restaurants, and hotels is another common option. Roles can range from kitchen staff to front-of-house positions like waiters and receptionists.
3. **Retail Jobs**: Many Malayalis find work in retail, whether in supermarkets, clothing stores, or electronics shops. These jobs often do not require extensive qualifications and can be a good starting point.
4. **Cleaning Services**: This includes both residential and commercial cleaning jobs. While not glamorous, these positions are often readily available and can provide steady income.
5. **Driving Jobs**: From taxi drivers to delivery drivers, there are various driving jobs available. A valid New Zealand driver's license is essential for these roles.
Requirements and Tips for Securing Jobs
1. **Resume and Cover Letter**: Ensure your resume is up-to-date and tailored to the job you're applying for. A well-written cover letter can also make a significant difference.
2. **Networking**: Connect with other Malayalis in New Zealand through community groups and social media. Networking can often lead to job opportunities that are not advertised.
3. **Job Portals**: Use job search websites like Seek, Trade Me Jobs, and Indeed to find openings. Regularly check these sites and apply for relevant positions.
4. **Certifications and Training**: Consider obtaining relevant certifications or training that can boost your employability. For example, a food handling certificate for hospitality jobs or caregiving certification for aged care roles.
5. **Volunteering**: Volunteering can provide valuable work experience and help you build connections in your new community.
6. **Local Job Fairs**: Attend job fairs and career expos to meet potential employers and learn about job opportunities.
Challenges and Realistic Expectations
It's crucial to set realistic expectations about the job search process in New Zealand. As mentioned earlier, it can take several months to find a job. The competition can be stiff, and the process might be slower than anticipated. Patience and perseverance are key.
