RIP JJW. I used to have an old 83 F150 that my kids and I would sing this to in. No A/C, so we used to have the windows down. They're all older and moved to other places across this nation of ours, but ahhh, the memories. Listening to this brings a tear to my eyes. Thank you for all the great memories.

When I moved to Austin in 1981, the first concert I saw was JJW at Gruene Hall. Second row. Fight broke out right in front of us. JJW just kept playing away. Our group put our feet up on the seats that were thrown around. Quite a night.

Grandpa and I went everywhere in his old blue Ford. My favorite times were when we'd go up to the flea market on Saturdays; I'd stay over at his house Friday nights so we could get up and get going by 5:30 AM, when the sun was just crawling over the pasture and the grass was so wet with dew that you'd be soaked to the ankles after just a few yards walking in it. But I digress. Bless JJW and this song for always bringing back those happy memories.

Here we call it "The Hondo Hill" So several (20 30?) years back I was out in Luckenbach having a few & picking some songs. I decided hit the Hondo hill & go for the record, imaginary as it might be. With a fair buzz I hit the top of the hill, radio blasting & eased my old giant suburban into neutral. A few minutes later started slowing down & got into the smaller hills still coasting along. Then I caught a smell like burning clutch or hot engine. The moral of the story is..... dont EVER put an auto in neutral with the cruise control on! LOLOLOL That old suburban was never the same.

I am crying listening to this. This was my childhood. My dad used to let me drive (although I’m not sure it’s as right to say he let me drive as it would be to say he *made* me drive) while he sipped wild turkey and chased it with a 20 ounce Coca Cola until one or the other was empty. Then he would either stop at a gas station for more coke or the liquor store for more wild turkey. We were in an old Chevy S10. Those were some of the best days of my life. Times were simpler back then, hitting old dirt roads as a 9 year old kid while my dad blasted JJW and got shit faced drunk. Then keeping the secret from my mother that I drove his drunk ass around 😂 He is now 11 years sober but this song and others by JJW still remind us of those carefree (or so we imagined) summer nights in Bowdon, Georgia. RIP JJW. Love, Me and Dad

I first saw JJW at Billy Bob's Texas in 1982. I went by myself, and was lucky enough to get an odd front row seat at the box office. I got a little drunk, and before the show was over, JJW cussed me out from the stage. I felt like I had arrived. Then, in '84, I saw him again at the Palomino Club in North Hollywood. I wanted him to sing TOO OLD TO CHANGE, but he refused. I got a little drunk, and before the show was over, JJW cussed me out from the stage. Having been cussed out in two states probably isn't a record, but it was a lot of fun!

As a teenager in Michigan my buddy and I did this in my VW, ourbest trick was the coast down a winding road past grandpa's house into a drive back on the road, turning the car around to face the other way then back down the hill to park in front of the house with my buddy .The car was not running for about one mile during those maneuvers. It was all by inertia and using higher grades against lower ones. Latter we tried that with the family station wagon and almost got killed I failed to realize on that winding road where the VW steering did not lock with the key out GM station wagons DID! It did boost our adrenaline for the hello's as the keys where out from the top of the hill but we discovered the locking issue about two hundred yards from a 20 foot drop off with trees, swamp and a slow 90 degree bend in the road made for some excitement in the car! My buddy helped by shouting out obvious instructions like "put the key back in" as I I fumbled the keys back into the ignition and cranked the wheel just in-time to make the turn! We were so glad to see my grandma and grandpa and us in one piece with no damage done to dad's car! As a teenager you always think about the damage you do to dad's car!

One of my friends had a '71 Chevy Nova that you could take the key out of the switch while in was still motion. Someone had modified the steering column before my buddy bought it. I was driving it one afternoon, and my buddy pulled out the key, and like your dad's wagon, it locked the steering wheel!! He finally got the key back in, just as we were starting over into the side ditch, with a 5 to 10 ft drop off. I floored it, and got it to spin out, and back onto the roadway. We left black marks all over the road, and he wanted to ride back up there to see 'em. I had a '69 Ford Mustang, and started to get into it to go back to see what we did, and my buddy said "let's take his Nova back up there, and I said that I wasn't going anywhere in that death trap", lol!!!
