No one could play guitar like Jerry Garcia...completely singular in every note, and it’s one of my favorite sounds in the world. Electric..acoustic...matters not.

I remember the 85 version of this one at Chula Vista literally brought tears to my eyes (Jerry sang all lyrics instead of trading with Bob for those electric versions to the best of my recollection) I was a taper and the sound from that show in particular was just stunning. This is one of my favorite Dylan tunes but in the hands of the GD folks it is on an entirely other plain of transcendence.

Originally in color, this was video taped for the Bob Dylan 30th Anniversary at Madison Square Garden in October of 1992. Plans were for at least Jerry to perform live, but he collapsed August and an entire fall tour was canceled, so they taped this one song. Apparently the "powers that be" (GD Management) felt that Jerry didn't look to good in color...

Thanks Steve. Was this actually played at the MSG Bob Fest? It was obviously not part of the ensuing video release.

The freaking genius of Dylan lyrics enchanted the fellas. Only thang close is hunter lyrics. I've heard Phil sing this like 2 years ago.. honestly I think my favorite live version was Stu Allen I'm DH since 77, as much as I miss those that are gone, I appreciate those still with us. Dead and Co last year at Red Rock. Of course this year last shows in SF. But more than the shows that even DSO lay down, with guests like Bobby, Peter it doesn't matter. It's my tribe, there isn't anything like our DH community on this planet. I'm only DH since 77, and yes I'm a Cornell/Ithica WTF kinda guy for my 2nd GD show. Not sure where I was heading with that lol, so now I'm 67, should Bobby or Phil or DSO or Stu or blah blah blah carry on with GD music.. well I'm in. Hopefully c c.u.all at the Warfield soon for DSO Anything else is a freaking bonus

Anyone got the entire movie on here? So many childhood memories. I was born in '97, 2 years after Jerry died. I remember (very vaguely) sitting in my house, at only 5 years old, watching Backstage pass. It was unlike anything else.
@groovy19677 жыл бұрын
While this particular song isn't on there, you may want to give this one a listen, it's the band without the drummers, playing mostly acoustic, and they sound remarkably good, especially considering how far they would fall in the coming months. archive.org/details/paf1994-09-24.matrix.sirmick.78005.flac16/phil94-09-24d1t02.flac

So much soul, feeling, ability, inventiveness and a combined musical knowledge and history makes this spontaneous, slightly loose version a gem. For those of us old enough to have been aware of Dylan as a contemporary, this song has always been outstandingly poignant and true. This simply can't be known or felt as much by a much younger person. I feel lucky to have grown up with these guys. There is nothing else like it now.

I love this version. It has a livelier and folky feel which benefits from the vocal switch off. They always played it at a slower tempo with full band which sort of brought out a certain feel that made it even bluesier, but I love it this way too. Imagine being at some outdoor fire with them playing and it certainly couldn’t get much better than that.
