It happens all the time in the major. They do whatever it takes to win . Sad but true . They come down on the smaller programs because they don’t make them the money the bigger programs offer like Duke , Kentucky , North Carolina , etc. For whatever they really came down on “ Shark” at the time .

I should read that book. I hated that hack piece. Herren was a 22 year old kid who had a burgeoning drug proble, not a bad kid. And old two-faced Mike sand bags him, smiles to his face then puts this "trash" out on national tv. I hated Mike Wallace since '98 bc of this, cheered when he died.

Took them to back to back NCAA Tournaments in 2000 and 2001. In 2001 they beat California for Tarkanian's final NCAA Tournament victory. I think they've made it back to the tournament once since he left in 2002.

I am Fresno State grad and was a huge Dogs basketball fan during the Boyd Grant era. I was one of the FSU slums who was against the hiring of Tarkanian. Why, because despite the “Father Flanagan” image many like to heap on him, the truth is that Tark brought in highly questionable kids both at Long Beach State and UNLV and then ran a very loose program with almost no controls/checks on these kids. He destroyed the program at UNLV and proceeded to do the exact same thing at FSU. He was successful on court but at way too high a cost.
@MattSmith-iq1ld

You need to do more research Dan Myers, although, as a FSU backer, you have more right to gripe than anyone. The NCAA ruined UNLV. They harassed Tark. The NCAA had to pay him well over a million bucks for harassment because they were scared out of their minds that he would unveil their selective enforcement rules to the Supreme Court of the United States of America. Tark and UNLV had sworn affidavits from the state of Nevada that clearly revealed that Tark was wrongly accused for the things he was accused of over the years, but the NCAA refused to listen or read it. You cannot bypass the law like that. The Nevada State Attorney General rightfully called the NCAA the mafia. You need to read Tark's autobiography "Shark Tales", which Bobby Knight wrote the forward for. Knight called him as good of a coach as there ever has been - especially when it came to getting effort out of his players. Bad kids don't exert that much effort for a coach unless they are loyal. There is no way Knight would have penned his forward if he felt Tark was a cheat. We're talking about a guy (Knight) who called John Wooden a cheater, and yet he NEVER did that to Tark during his coaching days or after his passing. I trust him on a matter like this far more than some network news TV trash story trying to tear down a guy who positively influenced the lives of scores & scores of inner city black kids. Kids deserve 2nd chances. This whole thing started Dan back when Tark was at LBSU and he could see first hand how Sam Gilbert and other UCLA boosters were buying off players and giving them things illegally left and right. The NCAA ignored it all, as did Wooden. Knight knew it, which is why he calls him a cheat. Moneyball at UCLA. So Tark wrote an editorial to a Long Beach paper which said that in basketball and football, the NCAA ignored the horrible transgressions of big programs and punished little schools like LBSU and Centenary. He cited all sorts of evidence. The NCAA sent a letter to him and the LBSU AD which said that Tark couldn't write such an article. Why? This a free country! So Tark did it again when the NCAA totally destroyed the Western KY program so they could allow Kentucky - the NCAA's "brand name" - to assert more dominance. Same thing - the NCAA sent a letter LBSU and Tark. So Tark wrote another letter. Ever since that point, they harassed and stalked his programs night and day until he left Fresno State. And yet despite undergoing more scrutiny than any sports program ever, the NCAA could never prove that Jerry, his assistants, boosters or anyone paid off a player, which to me is by FAR the WORST transgression of all. The "lack of the institutional" charge is a bullshit charge - it's basically when the NCAA comes after you, can't unveil a thing, but because they took so much time investigating you, they felt they needed to justify their silly actions. I wish to make this clear: I am by no means saying that Jerry was a saint. He made mistakes, and what's sad is that the worst of them happened when he had UNLV rolling big time. He had zero business recruiting Lloyd Daniels, but Syracuse, Kansas and St. John's were all over Daniels too. Why weren't they slammed? As far as Fresno State is concerned, he shouldn't have taken the job. For one thing, the NCAA was going to be on his tail before he even stepped on campus. He should have known that. As I documented in another post, having had been a huge fan of Tark while he was at Vegas and knowing his methods, he got very lazy with recruiting at Fresno State as many coaches do in their sunset years. Tark totally admits this error in his book. The players just came to him at FSU, whereas in the Vegas days he would go to the Bronx and look into to the kid's family, friends, girlfriend, teachers, etc., to see if the guy would take advantage of the opportunity and be loyal to him. Loyalty was his deal. He said it is almost impossible to teach a kid out of being disloyal. If he's loyal, he'll practice his butt off, he will go to class and so on. Sidney Green came from arguably a worse area than any guy who played under him at FSU, but Sidney made something of his life. It's all documented in his autobiography. Tark once said, when it comes to inner city black guys, that a UNLV sociologist said that you're lucky if 3 out of 10 become very successful human beings. Tark hit the mark a lot higher than 3 out of 10. Especially at Vegas with their restaurant and hospitality major (or whatever it is they call it these days - I was attempted to apply for it coming out of HS.) that always guarantees you a job after college. Think of all the hotels in Vegas and the advantage of being a ball player after graduation. Many of his kids took advantage of this instead of being stuck in the ghettos of D.C., Detroit, L.A. and so on. I could go on and on and on about this, but I will let Tark's autobiography (cowritten by Dan Wetzel, possibly the best sportswriter in America). But before I end it, I must say one thing: NEVER, EVER trust any report that refers to a programs graduation rates. They are high deceiving. According to the federal guidelines, if a juco kid comes into your program and he graduates with a 4.0, you don't get credit for graduating him. If a player leaves your program to go to Dartmouth to get more playing time, he is considered a guy who failed to graduate from your school. And of course if a player leaves your team after his sophomore year to be a top 10 pick in the NBA draft, he is considered a guy who failed to graduate from your program. How is this any different than Bill Gates leaving Harvard to begin Microsoft? It's why the NCAA adopted the APR (academic progress report) to make sure kids were in good academic standing when they left your program. No on deserves to get hammered because their 12th man transfers to Arkansas-Pine Bluff. The APR is about one of the only smart things the NCAA has done. Other than that, they are basically crooks who are still allow big name teams to get away with all sorts of crazy things. Meanwhile, the NCAA would sit Vegas players for 3 games for not paying a hotel back for a 10 cent telephone call because they were a Big West team back then. Stupid stuff that everyone does and is only brought out if the NCAA hates you. They pulled this crap constantly from 1998-1991, and often wouldn't tell Tark until 5 minutes before tip time, forcing him to alter his entire game plan on the spot. I could just go on and on. I still feel he has not been given ANY CREDIT for the fact that NONE of his players were ever found to have been paid off. The NCAA investigated him so deeply that they couldn't have gotten away with anything. So out came the "10 cent telephone call" type violation. Just so hideous! As he said during the promo for his book, he nor any assistant were busted for a major violation except for the "lack of institution control" tag which, as I said before, is the NCAA's out. The Fresno State academic fraud charge was B.S. No coach she be accountable for 2 kids whose playing eligibility had expired. If two of his EX-players got help on some papers because they wanted to start prepping for the NBA combine, it is not Tark's responsibility unless he was directly involved, which the NCAA could never prove. He never told those kids: "Hey go to this guy or that guy and he will help you pen your papers." I wish Tark would've taken those bastards to the Supreme Court (which he threatened to) to expose their hypocrisy. They had the goods on them. But I just feel Tark was so pissed that it was effecting his health, his family, and most of all, his players, that it be best that he take his money and ride into the sunset. I feel Dan that Tark should have never come to Fresno State, and I understand your anger regarding some of those years, but I really advise you to read his autobiography to get the full picture on LBSU and UNLV. So much of his career is based on an erroneous viewpoint that where is smoke, there must be fire. I don't feel the average college basketball fan understands the DEPTH that LBSU and UNLV were investigated. They even hired students aids at UNLV to try to catch the players committing a violation. As Tark said, in the history of the game, he and LSU's Dale Brown were the only coaches to ever strongly criticize the NCAA and get away it for years and years without getting fired. It's because they had athletic directors who backed them. The NCAA doesn't like coaches attacking them. People advised Tark to kiss up to the NCAA, but that was not his way. He was brave man who stood on principle, despite the faults I have admitted.

Since when has the NCAA gone after a kid because some local restaurant gave him a rice bowl? This report very biased. I will never forget when Fresno was nailed with academic fraud charges because two kids whose eligibility had ended. They got illegal help for papers from people outside the program when their elibility had ended. They were no longer Tark's player's! And since when should you be denied a 2nd chance just because you did something stupid in the past?? Now if the coach keeps playing the dude and playing the dude, that's a different discussion. The only I will say, and Tark admits it in his autobiography "Shark Tales," he did get lazy with recruiting at Fresno. At Fresno he was just taking in transfers without really looking into their background, the people around them, etc., to see if they had the goods to take advantage of an opportunity. Coaches as they get older don't like the travel as much, and by the time of this report, the NCAA rule book was as thick as three Bibles.
