Oh man, the Bones tour was my introduction to Primus. My friends and I arrived a little bit late and Primus had already started their set. Tim was doing the cymbal intro for Too Many Puppies as we made our way to our seats, and we sat down just as Les and Larry roared in. I just remember thinking to myself "Ok THIS is different and I LIKE IT." As I'm also a bass player, you can probably imagine why. To think now that I saw two of history's most iconic bassists on the same stage back then...

Frank Beard did this in the late 90s. He was trying these new toms that were toms, but had the length of otobans. I can still remember the pictures in Modern Drummer and couldn't help but think how weird it looked. Years later, I kind of did the same thing by getting a left-hand double pedal so I could move the kick to my left and move everything lower. Gotta say, it save a lot of movement and made moving around the kit a lot easier.

I love that Herb uses a lot of toys and always experimented w super weird setups...I chalk that up to the Rush influence. I don't envy his drum techs but he is a no-nonsense monster on the drums. Tim is an amazing drummer. And the way Primus records, he has to build his parts AFTER Les has already recorded bass… Which is not the traditional way or easy to do. Wanna know an unanswerable question? "Who does Primus sound like?" I'm a fairly eclectic listener -- I love the Beastie Boys, the Doors, Devo, Metallica, and The Eagles with equal intensity... but there's something SO unique about Primus, and other posters have said it here.... it's the blend of virtuoso musicianship and the absolute disdain for traditional melodies and rhythms... they are ALONE in their own genre. They're infinitely smarter than any other band out there, with the possible exception of Tool... but Tool is a bit too didactic and intellectual. There's no sense of humor in Tool's music. Primus knows it's a genius and says "Let's do jello shots!" Truly unique, truly mind-bending, and above all, ENTERTAINING.
