I practiced medicine in Central Florida for30 years before retirement. I since have settled in Colorado and Arizona. Unfortunately, the quality of health care in Florida is notoriously poor. Physicians qualifications, accessibility, and decision making is unfortunately lacking compared to many other geographic areas. There are exceptions, but few.

On Medicare we’re allowed one wellness visit each year. Our local clinic wants us to do a televisit for the annual wellness visit. I said NO WAY! If I only get one visit per year I want to see my doctor in person!

Hi Jerry and Linda. As far as your medical call backs...I use my healthcare portal (your doctors website should have one) When ever I have a question, I post it on the message board and my doctor responds usually by the end of the day or within 24 to 48 hrs. The portal has your wellness visits and all your necessary appointments and health history. It's your own healthcare webpage that is connected to your doctor. Everything is online now and less frustrating than the old school call back system. I even have to make my haircut appointment with an app on my phone.Your healthcare portal should also have an app for you phone. You know what my son's say to me after their experience in Iraq and Afghanistan..."Adapt and overcome dad" Thanks so much for posting your journeys.

To the person asking about buying a lot, the design process can be daunting but with a little pre work, the design meeting that is supposed to last seven to nine days can be completed in two hours and fifteen minutes. That’s all mine took. And I LOVE my new home.

Although I can't recommend a PCP in or around TV as I don't live there yet, as a now retired R.N. that worked the last 21 years of my career as a primary care clinic R.N. I can recommend a few things to look for while searching for you next PCP. #1, find either a retired or still working R.N. or LPN who lives in or around TV and ask them who they would recommend as a PCP. This is no different than asking a retired TV plumber for good plumber recommendation because they have the expertise to spot faulty plumbing work a mile away. Generically speaking from my experience, look for a PCP who is in a moderate sized group practice of 4-5 doctors and or nurse practitioners, and this practice also has on their staff an R.N. or LPN that triages all the sick calls that come in and not just a staff person who will take a quick message for the doctor that you are requesting a call back. We who perform telephone triage which I hold a certification in have the training and expertise along with the use of an algorhythm to ask the right questions to elicit the right info. And that along with the ability to quickly research an electronic medical record for pertinent patient data all contribute to determining the urgency of a patient's situation which leads to making an appropriate disposition. Needless to say, a practice that does not have a nurse trained in telephone triage I would stay clear of because there is not enough info in those messages taken by likely a non medically trained receptionist to pass on to the doctor. And this results in the doctor not being able to determine who needs an ASAP call back and who can wait a day or two for a call back. And I can tell you from many years of experience most patients down play how ill they are, and it took a great deal of effort for me to convince more than I can count patients to call 911 or have someone drive them to the nearest ER. And on occasion I made the 911 call for them. Glad this topic came up as it has prompted me to call a former many years LPN colleague of mine who retired a few years ago and relocated to a community in Leesburg to get a PCP recommendation from her as I have no issue traveling when I relocate to TV traveling outside the community for better healthcare options. Good luck!!

My 61 year old husband died in August from untreated sleep apnea and a critical Vitamin B-12 deficiency. We were married for 41 years (HS sweethearts). For the twelve months before he died he had every single symptom of a B-12 deficiency. He had been taking Metformin for over 10 years. One of the side effects is it can block the absorption of B-12, so even if you’re taking supplements they may not be absorbed. B-12 injections would be indicated in that case. My husband was weak, aged 10 years overnight and was constantly dizzy. I took him to several different doctors, including specialists. He was even admitted into the hospital for fainting in a restaurant. No one checked his B-12 levels. It’s a separate blood test (part of a neurological panel) that you have to request. They were focused on his heart, which was fine. He suffered needlessly for a long time and then died when he fell asleep while watching a movie. His airway was blocked from the position of his neck. Sadly these days you have to be your own doctor.

You pick your base model. After this you can move walls, internal and external to fit your lot/requirement. I’ve seen plans where people have moved rooms around. Added rooms - including external toilets by pools. I’ll send you an eml. The other reason for not allowing people to sit on land is to avoid disruption and an eyesore to other residents.

I remember Exile. They were popular in the 1960s. “Kiss you all over”. I’m not being fresh, but the song gives me chills. I was so in love with my future husband at the time. A few years ago, I had a chronic infection following surgery and I couldn’t get a return call from my physicians office to save my life. I ended up going to urgent care several times. Of course they said I should go to my own doc and I explained the problem. I ended up consulting a specialist anyway. When I saw my doctor the next time, boy did I let loose. I also had an appointment following my heart attack and it was canceled. Because I was at my rehab center, I didn’t get the message. I went to my appointment and they explained he wasn’t in. I understand that, but they wanted me to wait like 6 months for an appointment. I refused. I said I’m being penalized for something beyond my control and I needed an appointment very soon. I was about 30 days post MI. They insisted they couldn’t do it. Well, I’m a type A personality and part of that is I wasn’t leaving until I got an appointment. Long story short, I got my appointment Monday and this was the Friday before. I was firm but insistent. You have to fight for yourself. However, there was no excuse for their behavior. I understand they were ignorant.

Based on my experience, medical care in AZ is below par. Drs go where the seniors go ... FL and AZ! In Phoenix valley, medical companies are buying out individual family practices and setting up chain clinics only serving seniors. Independent, Personal, face-to-face, family practice care is on its way out. It’s all “one size fits all” care. :(

My mom and I stay at a GREAT VRBO right on the sand at Sunset Beach on Treasure Island- it even has a beachside pool! The sand is soft and white like floor and the water is in the 80’s!! It only takes us about 90 minutes to get there and we leave our fur babies at Miss Kate’s Bed and Bisquit to board. It’s walking distance to Caddy’s - a great restaurant and bar and music right on the sand with free umbrellas and chairs/chaise (just tip the attendants). Also, Ka’Tiki - bar and live music venue is across from Caddy’s. But don’t worry- the VRBO is far enough away you can’t hear the music- about a quarter of a mile!!!

How interesting. I had been thinking about how it would be great if you would do a show on health care in TV. It’s pretty confusing and hearing from some qualified people would be so helpful. My husband is still working so we have his insurance but he begins Medicare next January and I won’t begin until next September so we have a gap period of no insurance for me. And even with Medicare different places require different plans. We got all our medical appts done before we moved here in November to give us time to find new doctors but apparently that’s going to be difficult since they aren’t accepting new patients! I had one emergency appt with a medical eye dr because my left eye went all blurry. After searching who takes our insurance I was blessed to be able to see someone the next day. I was very impressed with the care and I go back for a followup (hopefully it resolves itself) and routine exam soon. But trying to find primary care, dental and gynecological care in a timely manner is a challenge. Back home many times we could call our doctors and be seen the same day if needed. Healthcare is such a huge issue and it’s even more complicated here in TV where comments are regularly posted that you are not seen for months or, like you said, don’t even receive call backs. We love our new home here in TV but like you, we are seeing some downsides to living here. Maybe it’s even worth flying back home for a week just to get all our routine visits done? We’ll see. Hopefully the powers that be will address the needs but a show on this would be a great resource. Thanks for all you do for us!

Good morning Jerry and Linda . I had emailed you over a month ago asking about the healthcare situation in Florida but i never heard back from you. I know it was probably an oversight. We were planning to move to St Augustine last year and one of our concerns as seniors was securing a good medical doctor. In my quest to find one I was repeatedly told no office was taking on new patients. I called several offices. This was very concerning and frustrating. Not having a good doctor deterred us from moving to Florida last year. We have heard that there are a lot of bad doctors in Florida as well. Can you provide some clarity in this regard? I know you had difficulty getting your doctor when you were both sick with Covid. This does not encourage me about medical care in Florida. I’m glad you’re both feeling better. I hope you do find a competent physician. Linda, you always look lovely. ❤️

We use the Rivers Family Medical group. They opened an office in Brownwood Square. Also, an office in Spanish Springs. Have had very good response time from them on multiple occasions even on the weekend.

Another great show. Primary care is now a numbers game and I'm sure it has something to do with how insurance works. Many dental practices now are numbers games also. Neither are how they were when I was a kid. I don't have any complaints about the care I receive, but it feels rushed or rationed somehow. My new dentist is running between many chairs at once.... my old dentist had one chair and did everything himself. Grocery bills are another thing all together. Prices and "package shrinking" are advancing faster than inflation. Just our 2 person produce bill is $100.00 a week. I give it a positive spin though..... a large benefit of higher prices is that is gives you less money to manage.

If your doctor does not call you back after two calls immediately call another doctor. You are sociable. Ask a friend who they have and call the docs if they get good feedback. My doc does both telemed calls where we have internet sessions as well as office calls. I love telemed. I dial up the internet and we “FaceTime.”

I live in Nevada and have the best Doctor. We were always able to get in within a day. They are now so backed up that our family doctor takes 2 weeks to get into. If you liked your doctor, it may not be them that is the problem. We have severe shortages in staff everywhere. People are getting sick and are going to see their doctors more now due to fear of consequences of not going in. I’ve gone to get lab work done and the location I like was closed. They never close. They only had enough staff to fill their other locations that day due to staff calling in sick! Hang in there. It’s not just restaurants having trouble keeping and filling jobs! Our schools only provide bus transportation on a rotating basis of weeks. I have no idea how working parents get their children to school for the three weeks their neighborhood doesn’t get bus service! Not enough bus drivers. No one will take the jobs with benefits!

Good idea Jerry and Linda, you are retired and have time enough to check prices and the contents of items you buy! I call this my weekly exercise! I check prices, check contents, check my budget, check my menu! Then once a month, I walk Costco, I walk BJ'S. then I check my local discount stores! We are aging, but we are not stupid yet and can add! So I will say as long as we can budget and save, keep it up!

Good idea.. It is easy to check the prices when companies advertise sales including their prices. The one I was referring to does not. A sale ad that features items that cost more than they do at other stores when not on sale? Restaurants that advertise menus without prices? Some people have more money than others. In my experience people that watch what they spend often end up with more money TO spend.
