Chapter 22 of the Acts of the Apostles in the Jerusalem Bible recounts Paul's defense before the Jewish mob in Jerusalem after he is arrested.
Paul addresses the crowd in Aramaic, explaining his background and conversion. He tells them how he was educated under Gamaliel in Jerusalem and was zealous for God, just as they are. He recounts his persecution of the followers of Jesus, including his journey to Damascus with authority from the chief priests to arrest believers and bring them back to Jerusalem for punishment.
Paul describes his encounter with Jesus on the road to Damascus, where a great light from heaven blinds him and he hears Jesus speaking to him in Aramaic. He asks Jesus what he should do, and Jesus tells him to go to Damascus, where he will be told what to do. Paul is blinded by the light and is helped to Damascus by his companions. In Damascus, a man named Ananias, who was faithful to God's law and well spoken of by all the Jews living there, tells Paul that he has been chosen to see Jesus and hear him speak.
