That's the thing, the Norwegian Armed Forces asked Jerven to make a bag that could replace a sleeping bag during wintertime, and that's what they came up with, the Jerven Extreme.

I’d still use warm clothes inside or another lighter bag

@@The_gear_review_channel Wouldn't use another lighter bag inside, uniform yes but not an extra bag inside during winter.

good to see someone talkin about this amazing bit of gear in English. I carry a hunter in Australia on my day hikes when I'm not carrying my full kit in case I get stuck out over night or someone needs help.

Thanks for the feedback. It’s a solid piece of kit. I’ll be uploading some decent use of it this autumn here and instagram.

Tks for sharing. I have the hunter model myself and totally agree with you (from experience) that a zipper sealed system would be a great improvement to make it more watertight. You say you feel quite safe underneath spruces cause they offer some protection against rain and snow. Be careful with that 'cause complete branches may snap of by the weight of collected snow on top. Being a ranger I have to clear lots of snapped branches of pines and spruces that came down on walking trails after snowfall. Some of them are serious widowmakers. But besides that, the evergreens are great places to camp stealthy. Will check out more of your vids. Atb fm NL. Cheers

You're absolutely right about spruce trees especially in winter. They become somewhat brittle.

great video, good advice 👍🏽! I treated myself to a Jerven extreme and a 170g/m^2 liner for x-mas. Haven't used it outdoors yet, but spent some nights in a garage to learn what it can do for me. Sofar I know it'll keep me very warm at +2c without an additional sleeping bag, but a good enough sleeping pad (R value >3.2) is a must on bare concrete!

Thanks Alexander. When I used this inside my lavvu with no wind to get at me and a big bed of spruce boughs, it was good at minus 4 celsius. I was wearing two layers inside the bag and had a wool blanket over the spruce boughs. When you get the chance to test this outside, bring a dedicated sleeping bag with you also and try to get a decent amount of spruce boughs so when lying on them you will be at least one foot off the ground. Let me know how it goes 👊🏼

Great job! There is a real lack of practical use and true-life extensive English-language reviews of these products on KZfaq. For some reason, these bags haven’t really caught on in my neck of the woods (United States). It’s too bad, tho’ as these products are exceptionally good for what they are. Top-notch quality with immense attention to details of construction. I have the Extreme (older model without waterproof zipper) with heavier insulation liner and the King. I have used both for hammocking with the King-sized one as the cocoon and the Exclusive as the top quilt (overkill, I know...but effective) per Suzanne Williams, another active KZfaqr. I will definitely use your ideas when I go to ground. I agree with your ideas for improvements. I hope to get the newer model Exclusive with the waterproof zippers but will likely keep using the one I have until perhaps it wears out. It’s been 6 years so far and it still looks new, so it may be many years before an upgrade comes my way.

Thanks for the comment. Great points. Paired with an insulated poncho is something that these bags work really well with also. Something like a Hill People Gear Mountain Seraph. The uses for the bag keep on growing. Testament to it's build quality.

@@The_gear_review_channel Have you seen the set that allows you to add ends and partial floor/skirt to the King-Sized Jerven bag? Really extends the utility of that thing...but for the life of me, I cannot find a seller of the product and the company is not responding to emails...

@@The_gear_review_channel It really looks amazing...it allows you, using two hiking poles or other supports, to create a surprisingly large insulated tent structure. If anyone has any info on purchasing, I would be incredibly thankful for more information. And I would also spread the word...

Great video as always, I've used a similar setup with the zip at the top but only suspended from the head end from a branch. Arm and top zip open for ventilation. Good low profile whilst keeping the bag away from your head.

I used this setup in the Ardennes in Belgium, thinking it would be a dry night, man, it started raining without stopping, I became soaking wet inside and my condensation builded up as well. I'd only use this setup in summertime and prefer to put up the Hunter as a tent above my head.

Great review, very useful. One question, I find using the extreme in that way fairly tight / lack of space. Have you tried zipping the hunter and extreme together to make one big shelter? I have both, might try at weekend, won't be as warm but more room..
@The_gear_review_channel
@The_gear_review_channel 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment my man. When I set this up like this it is tied up about 2 feet from the ground so the space is ok for me. However, The lower down I rope it against the tree the more space I have inside. I have tied two bags together but for a tent set up for two people. You could try zipping one side together as you said and just looping around each other and tying off the eyelets against the ridge line. That way you'll get more warmth and more room inside.

@@richardwatt8845 For me at the moment I use tents from m Hyperlite Mountain Gear between 500 and 800 grams. The weight is important for me. The Jerven is more as an emergency to use as bivy with a candle inside to gain heat. I wonder if this heat can still be achieved with the candle in this tent set up that they have. It's an expensive test though that I won't be doing 😜 unless Jerven want to give me these extenders 👊🏼💥

Those hyperlight tents look good, tried out the Jerven at the weekend. First night was zip down, 2nd night was zip on top. Loved the zip on top idea, you can peek out and during the day use it as an easy access place to stash equipment, easy to get into too. Great idea. Didn't suffer from any notible condensation. Weather was dry, clear and went down to freezing level.
