Welcome to Day Two of a 30 Day Cracklathon with polymer clay. I'll be creating a different crackle veneer every day for a whole month.
In day two of the polymer clay cracklathon I'll go through the basics of using metal leaf and foil. I'll include as many tips and tricks as I can to help you get the best result possible when using foil and metal leaf. This is a basic tutorial as we will be doing more complex tutorials later in the month with foil and metal leaf so practice the tips and tricks now so that later it's super easy to use.

Wow, I remember watching these when they first came out, but didn't see them all & wanted to give myself a "refresher course" but I can't believe it's been 3 years already!

It's reassuring to see the foil being difficult. I thought it was just me. Thanks for sharing difficulties in the tutorials too❤

A nother tip for the foil, a quick wipedown with alcohol or acetone on the back side (the one that goes on the clay) can help with stubborn foil, that´s a trick we use often when you´re working with nails :) there are some foils that just wont come off no matter what, but if you wipe it before, it comes right off :) Very good tutorial, never even crossed my mind to use foil with clay, metal leaf, that I knew, so THANK YOU :D as a nail deco hoarder, I have LOTS and LOTS of foils! lol great to have another area than nails to use it on :) Can´t wait to see what comes up tomorrow :D this 30 days of Crackle is a brilliant idea! :) I´m so glad/happy that you´re doing it! :D

CrixJoki, good tip about the alcohol. It seems we have all had that piece of foil that just won't adhere. I just had that happen for the first time two days ago.

Thanks CrixJoki. I have a number of LP foils, particularly the light coloured ones that refuse to come off, so I'll try the acetone trick. Also any red ones I have have the same problem so I'll try again with the acetone. Thank you.

Thanks for such an interesting and informative tutorial on metal leaf and foil, Samantha. So many valuable tips. I don't feel so intimidated by the foils now, and your tip about how to lay down metallic leaf without it flying all over is genius!

Thank you for the tips on the Mylar backed foils. I used the one by Lisa Pavelka one time, and found it so difficult that I have avoided it since, despite loving the colours and patterns. Now I have some new tricks in my arsenal, I can try it again!

Day 2 is offering some much needed tips about foils. From the comments below, it looks like foils can be more problematic than one would think. I like the tip about the heat gun and the different colored metal leaf.

Thanks Samantha, I bought these metal leaf & it was disastrous. I got into such a mess. I also tried the foils but thought they were the same as metal leaf. As you can imagine that didn’t work well either. I really had no idea what I was doing. Now I’ve seen this video I’ll give it another go, they are so pretty. Theses tips were great. Do you need to seal the foils after it’s cured. I imagine you would.

I was looking up the mylar foils today after seeing someone do a Bargello effect with them but I only saw Lisa P ones. Thanks for sharing how to use them...I wasn't sure if u could use those coloured foils in Spotlight, can u only use foils with mylar on them?

I typically use the Lisa Pavelka line of foils. Some can be a bit tricky to use, but they're the best bet. Nail foils also work, but not all the time. There isn't really a way to tell. Personal advice would be to go with the metal leaf rather than the foils. They're easier and give pretty much the same result.

Would you recommend rolling the foiled clay between two sheets of paper to keep the foil from coming off in the pasta machine? Lovely tutorial, thank you for your generosity!

I learnt a lot of the tricks for the foil from her firemountaingems video. She goes into depth on using the foils. The heatgun was my idea though. It happened when I got fed up with the foil and took it out by heatguning the clay cured with the foil on top. It came off like a charm. That's how I found that the heatgun works so well.

Sooo when you turn these into a cabochon can you sand them? If not do you have to varnish them to protect the stone?
@JessamaTutorials

No. If you sand, you'll sand off the foil. I protect with a varnish or resin.
