From the 2006 Kennedy Center Honors tribute to Dolly Parton. As mentioned in her memoir 'Open Book' she was broken up with by John Mayer shortly before she hit the stage. Taken from Canadian news footage, since removed from the internet and reuploaded by me!

I love Dolly so much, because you can tell she seems to be saying something to the affect of "she was doing fine" to the person with her. Then right after this, she came and saw Jessica and said "I wrote the song, and I cant remember the words" like, shes so sweet and supportive.

I’m here after listening to the story of this on “You’re Wrong About”. I am so grateful for that podcast because I now know we can blame it all on John Mayer. Such a jerk.... messing with Jessica’s mind when it’s a big night like that. Can’t he take a break from being a totally toxic douche for one night? In honor of Dolly Parton he could keep his manipulative BS to himself until the next day, but instead he’s calling and texting Jessica, trying to break up and then sending her songs to listen to..... calling her before she went on..... Jessica had an alcohol problem, and John made her anxious and she wouldn’t have been such a mess if he hadn’t been triggering her in a moment when she really needed to be sober. Her substance issues aren’t his fault, but he knew she had them and knew what he was doing.

I agree. He knows that she had an issue with drinking for anxiety reasons, and men like him know how to trigger their partners in manipulative ways in times where they will be most vulnerable. That’s what he did. Any decent person would attempt a break up on a day where the person being dumped is gonna be available to receive difficult news and either talk about it or be able to go and be alone afterwards. If you dump your girlfriend right before she supposed to sing before Dolly Parton, while not just her but many legends are in attendance including Obama...... you deserve all the songs Taylor Swift writes about you.

I had an abusive boyfriend in high school, and there was one horrible fight the night before I had to get up super early to get to a horse show. I'm talking yelling, screaming, threats, all because he didn't want me to go to the competition. This was a show at Ox Ridge, and if you're on the show circuit you know how important their shows are. I got a few hours of sleep but it was horrible. I did pretty well in the show, but I remember that his father came to watch me because his whole family was supposed to come, but since he was angry and refusing to go himself, her and his brother didn't come out of "solidarity." But his dad said he had made me a promise and that he was going to keep it, and when his son was screaming and cursing at me and treating me like trash he'd intervene, tell him son off and drive me home to get away. While not identical situations, I completely feel for Jessica here. When a man is abusive and you've been broken into needing them, despite our because of their abuse, them turning on you in a moment that should be triumphant for you feels like the earth has shattered below you and you don't know why or how to fix it. As an adult I now know that men whi treat women like this are doing it because they're insecure and so terrified of you leaving them that they have yolo beat you down to what they believe is their own level. They do this to create dependence in you in the need to please them, to focus on nothing but their happiness, regardless of what you actually want or need. They need you to put them before yourself. I broke up with him not looking after that show. I had gotten my driver's license (I was 16, he was 20 and didn't have one himself) and one evening his parents where traveling home and couldn't pick him up from work and they asked if I could. When I picked him up at first he was thankful, "thanks, you really didn't have to do this," but it slowly morphed into a full blown rage "you didn't NEED to do this, YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE DONE IT!" I got to a stop sign and he jumped out of the car and ran to his house. I followed but his father wisely told me to go home. And that was the final straw. I told him I needed time to think, and that every time he contacted me it would add an extra week to the time I gave him to leave me alone. The date was 3 weeks and by the end I was free and totally done. If you're going through this, you are strong enough to leave, just like I did. It feels hard hard because of the control, manipulation and outright abuse, but once you get distance you'll see them for what they are, little pathetic men who can't tolerate you being your own person. Life will be much better without him.

I am reading Jessica’s book now and saw her mention that she sang for Dolly at the Kennedy Centre. I’ve watched those clips and didn’t recall seeing Jessica, so I came here to check. After watching this, I went back to the book to read the whole story, and now I think you should take this down. It was a painful and humiliating night for Jessica. That’s not the kind of thing that needs to be available on the internet for all to see, especially as it wasn’t broadcast. There’s no merit to having this available, no lesson that people can learn just from the clip, it’s the context that makes it powerful. Without that, it’s much more like kicking someone when they’re down. I hope you take this down, I think it would be a kindness.
