Everyone is (rightfully) talking about Jessye Norman's perfect performance, but I have to say, this Jose is also by far the best I've heard. Absolutely no strain or struggle on that high note. Totally clean and powerful and beautifully emotional. These two are a match made in heaven.

Woaw, her french is perfect. First time I can understand pretty much everything carmen says (and I'm french). A lot of "life" in this song as well. She's not just singing, she's also acting.

Yes, Jessye said she doesn't sing in any language she doesn't speak fluently. She thinks there should be a bigger emphasis, aside from the standard diction classes vocalist take, to a bigger emphasis on learning the language more so it can be more authentic.

Yes ! Miss Norman speaks French, Italian, German perfectly. She has been, is and always be a great artist. Her vocal range, the beauty of her voice, her musicality and a lot of qualities she has, are some of the reasons she is on the top 3 or 2 of the world. She is great ! I do not know if she speaks another language ( I am sure she does ), but as an international opera star, surely she does. I hope to meet her soon. She is one of the "must" in my life goals.

@@coreycox2345 Other singers did not treat Carmen as an intelligent and gentle woman, at least not enough details as Jessye dived into...I did hear it from the tenor's side of recording only, and it is true Jessye did not do Carmen live on stage. The tenor with her here is american's outstanding voice that is forgotten. Neil Shicoff sings with squillos. Gorgeous.

I think it is important for children to be exposed to high art and fine music. I am going to play this for them as they sleep. opera, ballet, the symphony.

If you are the mother of those children they are in good shape. I am always grateful that in our home we had classical music recordings when we were still in grade school. And THAT is why my high school classmates thought that I surely had an edge over everyone else. I did. Thank you, Mom and Dad.

One of the better interpretations I have seen. I was not expecting to hear this beauty from Norman - but I swallow my words. Bartoli falls flat and her diction is overpowering. This is simple with a clear delivery, and in tune throughout. Breath control and presence is fantastic. Over-the-top? Perhaps a bit - but consider the context of the character. She is in the middle of seducing a soldier - I would be dramatic too!

Now, listening to Ms Norman's rendition... everything else seems rush. This interpretation was so sensual and seductive, it is like a river of sensations that sweeps you of your feet to drag poor guy in an ocean of despair. I don't know what else can be said. This is one of the few reasons I am grateful to KZfaq, jewels like this are here for us to relive them. Thank you Ms Norman. Forever!
