Part of what makes the movie is just how minimalistic it is. The use of the ruins as a main set piece, and not attempting to have and insane amount of people, keeping the whole production very tight like a cast of players was a stroke of genius. It really keeps the stage or performance element intact that can so often be lost when a musical is put to film
@michaelwilliamybarra24093 жыл бұрын
And to characteristically explain why there aren't so many people, the film establishes from the beginning that the whole movie is basically a passion play performed by this bus load of modern day(70s) performers in an Israeli desert! It not only helps explain the lack of people, but establishes a precedent with how the show/album can be described as one of the critical means people back then were trying to re access how the public viewed The Christian Bible and religion as a whole. Within the same year the album came out, 1970, you also had Godspell by Stephen Schwarts playing on Broadway, which the public lashed at for it's own attempts at letting the young people of that time develop their own perception of Jesus(as more of a joyous friend to follow, rather than a deity that must be obeyed), when the older generation would rather they stick to "following what the Bible preaches(which is basically THEIR interpretation of it, which many of the younger generation probably saw as two faced with how those in power were willing to continue the then raging Vietnam War "in God's name")". With all this context in mind, for me, this really feels like watching a time capsule for how those of the younger generation tried to respond to the time period they were living in(as with the modern day references and symbols the several anachronistic lyrics in the show were trying to convey), and helps paint a comparison to what we now face in today’s society(War in Afghanistan, over commodification of political movements and basic necessities for survival, racism in general (both personal and systemic) that hasn’t changed too much in it’s ugliness and influence on the populace as most would like to think, etc.)! :)

Look at Pilate, right after he says "You're Herod's case". He changes expression, looks like he recognizes in Jesus the man who was in his dream. And the way he turns his back at Jesus, his expression, the way he walks away, is so: "Oh no...it cannot be". He actually realizes that his nightmare 's gonna come true.

I love how his intonation and facial expressions perfectly compliment each other and enphasize every emotion he feels. You can see him start with curiosity, wondering who is this man, and than a curious amusement of "so this is Jesus Christ", finally seeing the man everyone is talking about. He follows it up with mocking disdain "You look so small, not a king at all". Than, when Jesus says "Your words, not mine", you can see the anger in his face and tone when Pilate says "What do you mean by that?", followed by a certain amusement when he says "You're deep in trouble friend", like he is trying to figure out how can Jesus be so calm in his situation, kind of wondering whether Jesus really understands his situation. Than he goes back to a mocking disdain when he says "Someon Christ, king of the Jews", but now he is more aggressive in his tone. FInaly, he goes back to anger, but now with some added spite and mockery when he says "Since you come from the Galilee, than you need not come to me. You're Herod's race. You're Herod's case." you can feel his spite and anger especially form the "come to me" to "you're Herod's case". And he ends it by having a shocked and scared expression, as he stares Jesus in the eye and recognizes the Galilean from his dream. He is so surprised and gets so frightened by the memory of his dream he immediately turns around and goes away, he doesn't want to spend any more time near Jesus. It's just a brilliant scene and a masterclass in acting.

I see a lot of Jay Robinson's performance as Emperor Caliguia in The Robe in this. Arrogant, high strung, disdainful of those whom he sees as beneath him. And yet, for just one moment before he turns away, he seems to catch something in Jesus' eyes that shakes him. Just a brilliant performance.

HIs wife knows from the beginning of the scene and Pilate realizes it when he is face to face. He knows he will see him again and the dream is beginning to come true. Even as a non believer I enjoy this because of actors like Barry, he fills the screen with his character, he shows his desire to be powerful as a Roman leader but shows his vulnerability as a human with no choice in the matter, as Jesus says its all set and no one can change it.

Everything about this scene is an understated emphasis on just how powerful the Roman occupation must have been. In the opening the Romans are almost inaccessibly out of reach, and Pilate has to descend from on high just to even carry on a conversation. The part that really gets it across, however, is at 1:29. The expression on the woman's face when Jesus gives Pilate the wrong answer says it all.

I’ve seen several stage performances of this on youtube and just saw a live stage version last night and I can say nothing beats the movie (imo). I feel like the movie has a bit more grime on it in a good way. You can feel/see the emotions more whereas I feel in live performances most of the cast are really trying to show their singing chops and it can take away from the story. The cast of the movie have great singing moments, but the acting and emotion come out much more in this version and really help the story telling. Barry’s face when he realizes he’s looking at the man from his dreams is SO good. Also love Barry’s portrayal of Pilate. Every other Pilate I’ve seen seems so angry at Jesus when really I think he’s supposed to be disappointed and sympathetic. Pilate being angry defeats the purpose of Pilate’s Dream.

Pilate was the most powerful civil authority in Judea and Jesus was giving him a runaround with his vague and seemingly arrogant non-answers. That took balls. Jesus had already deliberately pissed off the religious authorities and now he was giving Pilate very little motivation to spare his life. Pilate had killed lots of Jews he considered rebels and troublemakers but he probably thought Jesus was just a crackpot and maybe even felt a little sorry for him.
