Likewise. I was on staff at a church in Orange County. Used to shop at Maranatha Village and also briefly did voice-overs on KYMS. Also, as a college student in Chicago, I had volunteered with a Christian Concert promoter. Over the years, I worked with so many of these bands/vocalist. What a trip down memory lane!

Later became KLTT aka 80 K-Light and was for a time sister station to KYMS in Orange County for a time.

@@christopherskipp1525 KLTT was eventually bought out by Crawford Broadcasting. The current incarnation of KLTT is on AM670 as a Christian Talk station while 800 AM was moved to AM810 and is now able to broadcast 24/7. AM810 is now an Adult Standards format.

Agreed. I’m so tired of endlessly hearing the same songs by a few artists on the Fish in Los Angeles. Some of it is awesome but let’s not forget the great music preceded the modern stuff.

It’s not that Christians don’t appreciate the early music, the Christian music industry controls what gets played and the old stuff doesn’t generate dollars for them. Many Christian labels are owned by major secular music labels so it’s about the bucks, not blessing people or ministry. The artists may be serving the Lord but the record labels serve the almighty dollar.

Totally agree Svetlana! I'm so tired of hearing the same songs and all the same sort of genre - it's all the same. What happened to all the great Christian bands and great songs? Not to knock Hillsong, Maverick City and Elevation Worship, they all have their place and worship music is beautiful, but I do miss the old bands of the 2000's.

I saw 2nd Chapter of Acts when i attended a large church in Cedar Hill - which was only about 100 miles from their home in Lindale, TX. Matthew did one of his hard rock solos and the older people in the front row walked out.

That's a great question and comment. My only connection to this music was from what I heard on the air, first on the independent radio shows (as I outlined in the intro to the first video) and then on stations that played the songs for more of the day (as I mention in the intro to this video). I can speculate and give my opinion. 🙂 As more and more artists came on the scene playing this kind of music, I would imagine that it became a challenge to find a new way to present the message, in a winning way that would capture the interest of an audience, and be a performance that the artist liked. Some artists disliked the industry (Larry Norman comes to mind), some were getting started and had to depend on the advice of the early record companies who were investing in them by recording and pressing discs to sell. And the more that was made available, the more content was demanded, particularly as radio stations grew and needed more music to play. Also recognize that the big labels (Sparrow, Myrrh, etc) were Christian-focused to begin with, and were ostensibly concerned about the message and artists not straying too far into unusual territory. (I think of Sandy Patti compared to Steve Taylor, for example). As for the lack of Jesus' name being mentioned in later music, I *believe* this would be an attempt to not overuse his name, but still communicate the message. Sometimes, perhaps, the point would be to grab a listener's interest with a song style or interesting lyrics, and letting a listener later dig deeper in to those lyrics to see what they meant. As for the secular record labels: When the big companies purchased the Christian labels, they did it to make money, not to try to change the music they made. The secular labels wanted successful artists who would sell product to their niche audience. Now, this is not to say that everyone's start and their finish is the same. U2 was a Christian band early on, but not so much today. Some artist have strayed away from their beginnings (as any of us can do). I do agree that the early "rawness" and earnestness of those artists is a reflection of the enthusiasm of their early encounter with the Savior.

Funny thing is, my family and I have been attending Calvary Chapel here in my area for the last 19 years and I had no idea about Jesus Music until I watched a documentary on Chuck Smith...and then went to see the Jesus Revolution movie. It made me want to look into it and that's how I ran across your videos. I've come across some great music, and I think my favorites have been Love Song, 2nd Chapter of Acts, and Keith Green. Man I love how on fire Keith Green was for Jesus. I appreciate you doing these videos.

This is unclear. Which song by which artist is listed as 1973 and was actually 1972? I can't change the video (it's been completed for nearly 7 years) but if there is a song in one of the playlists that is in the wrong year, that I can change. (And, BTW, this is the 1980-89 timesweep - are you referring to the 1969-79 timesweep video?)

You did not listen carefully. They have songs in 1981, 1982, 1984, 1987, and 1988. And of course are featured in the earlier 1969-1979 timesweep.

It's on my to-do list, but other priorities have pushed it back. Some day, I hope!

That is an interesting comment. There are a number of the songs from this of which I am particularly fond (Keith Green, Don Francisco, Michael W. Smith, Amy Grant, the Imperials, and so on), but there are a number of others that "charted" that are less enjoyable to me. I can speculate that what differs the 70s from the 80s is the rise of the CCM industry, wanting content for new CCM-focused stations to play, a change in the output from older artists who have had their salvation for a while, and singing to an audience that is similar. There is less of an intensity of "confess your sins and come to the Lord", and more of the "here's the Christian life and how to live it". And then there are songs that are just trying to make a point. Some that are not formulaic would be those by Steve Taylor ("I Want To Be A Clone", "Whatever Happened To Sin", and "Meltdown") which point at various things in the world or Christian life or the world that need attention, but in a more subtle way than in the music of the 1970s. Also, so many of those 80s artists used so much synthesizer. It was new and cool, but does seem overused. That being said, I am still fond of this decade in a different way than I am fond of the 70s. I guess it might be like the difference between a first love and a later more mature love; both important, but both different.

@@StevenWeyhrich Yeah, I'm not saying all of the music fit into a particular mold, if you will. But a lot did. Still does, for that matter. From a music only POV, it's...pretty limiting. In the case of Christian music, there are some genres that get virtually no airplay, so it must be very difficult to garner any sort of fan base, because it never gets heard on the air. One has to do some investigating. Nowadays, it's easier to do. But it just wasn't possible in the 80's, on up to the mid-90's at all. The 70's, it appears, gave everything a chance, lol I noticed the shift in the late 70's. Through much of the decade, the music wasn't fitting into any particular mold, if you will. The 80's was an over-produced (in the studio that is) decade. There is a reason for that. We moved into the digital realm. It allowed more tracks. It allowed more digital effects, and, because people COULD use them, they used too much of them, and far too often. It was like that for all genres of music. I am not critiquing the singers. They are fine. I'm just looking at the music.

@@Just_in_Rich I recognize that. Here are my limitations, however. First, the 1970s and 80s were my golden age of CCM. I listened to the music heavily during that time. I understand that for others, the 1990s, or 2000s or 2010s may be THEIR golden age, and that's why they'd like to hear clips of those songs again. However, after I married in the mid-1980s and had a family, my available time to keep up with the new music dwindled rapidly. I have other music I recorded off the radio that are on other videos on this channel, but it was just not as intense as before i married. I do enjoy some of the music of the 1990s, but don't know a large amount of it. The other limitation is that to create the 1970s and 1980s Timesweep videos was a fair amount of work; finding the music to take clips of, getting album art, etc, is involved. And I still have a full time job that actually pays my living expenses; these videos out KZfaq are completely non-monetized, as I do not own the rights to any of it, so I put them up just because I want to share it with others who may also enjoy it. So, yes, I do have an interest in creating a Timesweep for the 1990s, but it's just not on the forefront of my projects at this time. Pray that God gives me the time and enthusiasm!

Great use of call letters! For a brief time in the 1980s we had a Christian station in Lincoln, NE called KBHL, "Kept By His Love".

Oh, early on they were Christian in their lyrics. Where were their hearts, did they just get tired of doing that type of music, I don't know. But KYMS was really digging U2 in 1984!

Praise God for the Christian Book Stores that had these wonderful songwriters: Agape Christian Bookstore and Val Peplers Christian Book Store both at Longmont ,Co .and Ken and Linda Miller Family who helped me with so much music at their Music Store ,thanks for this inspiration .
