Does Jet Force Gemini still hold up nearly 20 years later? I just replayed the entire game, and here are my thoughts on Rare's obscure 1999 bug blaster.

@@GoodOldDaysGaming Late 90s and early 2000s were the golden era of gaming imo. The creative juices were absolutely flowing...ps1/n64 and ps2/gamecube/xbobx era, plus all the great PC games coming out. Possibly the best game on the n64. The worlds are massive with tons of secrets, both mandatory and not, the music makes Robin Beanland one of the best composers in rare and thats saying something! You should also bring up the difficulty as this game is a behemoth in that aspect. Gone are the managable difficulty of dkc and banjo-kazooie, this pushes the difficulty to its length without going battletoads on our asses.

But I was drawn to its space science fiction setting, so I got it anyway. I disliked it for the first hour, mostly because the control scheme felt strange. But after I got used to it, my love for this game just grew and grew. It is amazing, and I am always searching for something else like this, but I have not been successful. It succeeds at being cute and charming and violent and atmospheric at the same time. A perfect game for me!

Very underrated game I was born in 99 so I never got the experience of all the cool classics when they first came out, the first console I ever played was the Ps1 I started at two years old it's quite a suprise when I look back on it because I use to play with my older brother, then the second console I played was the N64 in 2002 the first two games were super mario 64 and WCW nwo revenge, third I played the Gamecube in 2003 when my brother's father bought it for him as a Christmas gift, oh and 03 was also the same year when we first got Jet Force Gemini and Rampage, Ps2 was the fourth console I played and really had fun with my childhood with that, I still play a couple of new games here and their but they just don't interest me as much as the older games, great review and I still love this game.

I just bought the cartridge. I missed playing this and can never comfortably play it on emulation software or the Wii (Not64, more like Notworthit64). I gotta have that authentic experience. I have the console again and I still own the box, instructional manual, and strategy guide+poster for it. I was holding out for an Everdrive, financially that will probably never happen. So I bought Jet Force Gemini for the N64 for way less and now I own it, it's in the mail but I own it; a part of my life will be complete again. I am so excited to play this, just watching the footage for it has me hyped, so much that I'm spending a good chunk of time typing this out. The expert control scheme in this game is absolutely perfect. The use of holding R to switch to tank control mode and using the C buttons to move was so forward thinking and really makes the game. It’s also really nice that you can jump while strafing, especially when running. Not possible on the normal control scheme due to button assignments. Expert feels so fluid and well designed. You’re used to it by the end of level 1 if you mess about just a bit. I’ve played through the game with both normal and expert controls many times, expert is the best.

One of my favorite games of all time.. Me and my dad played this game casually for about 4 months before we 100% completed it after several campaign restarts. He's in his 60s now and I hope someday me and him can play this again.

Omg my mom bought us this game randomly and we absolutely loved it we lost it a year later when we moved to a new house (along with our Sega and all but one of our Sega games, Street Fighter 2) but I never forgot about it. This game and A Haunting are two great games that don’t get talked about enough.

I dodnt realize thos was such a late release in the 64's span. I remember this being a contra (lite) for my N64, because as a kid the controls were challenging for me, and I would die a lot but I pushed through because it had so much fun playing it. With the perfect auto aim system, varied arsenal, and the super jump/jet pack action, I could just run around and blast bugs all afternoon despite all the restarts. Great job on the video.

I remember this game being so fun, the controls were very innovative and it was basically at the pinnacle of what the N64 was capable of graphically. Classic.

This was a really good game for its time! I gotta admit! When I was a kid this game was my go to, never could figure it out though when I was little I couldn’t find all 12 parts for the space ship 🚀. I love this game so much I’m gonna buy it and play it

Thanks! Yeah, the controls are as good as they can be for what it is. I just remember critics complaining about them at the time, but once you put in 30 minutes or so, you don't even think about it. I just feel like they may be a reason for why people didn't bother with this game. I know it's still fairly popular, but definitely nowhere near as popular as the rest of N64 Rare.

Loved this game, but that damn mantis boss man. I remember seeing Adam Sessler from Xplay said on TV once one of his most memorable moments playing was this game and that boss. He got stuck on it too and had to get his friend to play and blew all the ammo down to the puny infinite pistol and got so excited and anxious and finally beat it, "that was my most intense moment and I wasn't even playing". I yelled YES ME TOO because I also had to get a friend to beat it the first time. MEMORIES.

I've still got the OG N64 cart I had my parents buy me in 2000. According to it, I've logged over 40 hrs into 1 save file, but that's probably mostly with me constantly revisiting old areas and stuff.

The first game I played for N64. A family friend gave me and my brothers an N64 in October 99. But the console didn't come with a game so my big brother Melvin went to GameStop and bought JFG. The game was awesome

I bought this game about 6 months ago, and I still haven't beat it. Though I don't use KZfaq videos. I'm about halfway through. Funny story, I found out about this game in a Nintendo Power exclusive VHS tape promoting the game along with DK64. lol
