I was lost, and found.
Up til last month my emotions had been on a roller coaster since I arrived in Japan. Every day I was buried deep in nostalgia, confusion, and fear. I doubted, regretted, and hated my decisions. But now I've come to learn to accept them, to love them.
This is for all of you out there who have felt lost and hopeless in life. I've found my way to get out of the blues, and it is to empower myself from within. I hope you can be strong again soon, too.
Love,
Cara xo

Cara, I think I'd better explain why I came to Japan forty years ago. I came to work in an orphanage that specialized in helping children born between Japanese women and American Service men. It was at the highest time during the Vietnam War and the children were rejected by both parents. I was to work there for two years or more. I was having a great time at the Home( orphanage), but half way through my second year I got violently ill. Can you imagine what it would be like to be dying and not be able to communicate with the people caring for you? I had to have three operations on my abdomen in six months. The last time they called my family to come to be with me because they expected me to die. The people at the hospital, the friends I had made at the orphanage all took such loving care of me during that time. After the last operation I went back to Seattle for a year to recuperate, but I missed the friends I had made so much, and I felt cheated I didn't get my two years I volunteer for finished. While I was in Seattle recuperating two wonderful things happened. A group of doctors were passing through Seattle and when I told them how much I missed Japan one of the doctors asked me to come and volunteer at his hospital the other thing was I met my future husband, he was in Seattle teaching Japanese language and culture in Seattle Public Schools. After working at the hospital for a year my husband and I were married. My husband was such a fun guy to be with. After four years of married life we applied to adopt our first child a newborn baby boy. After six years we heard about the Japanese foster system, so we applied and became parents to three more sons in one year can you believe it!! For the next twenty years we were busy raising our family. I had been really healthy, then all of a sudden I started having pains in my right side again, they found a tumor and thought it was cancerous ( it wasn't) but the surgery was dangerous anyway and I was left in chronic pain. We had had a lot of financial troubles over the years my husbands health, both physical and mental started to deteriorate too. And one evening I woke up and my husband was no more, he had taken his own life. Why am I telling you this honey is because wherever you live,whatever you do in life there are going to be ups and downs and it's how you deal with those times that helps you deal with the pains in life. It doesn't matter who you marry, who your friends are, where you live, you you will have good times and bad times. Ask your parents and grandparents they went through the same things. My grandparents came from Wales, they immigrated to the United States, my grandfather died when he was forty leaving my grandmother with four sons to raise. It as though our lives are intertwined and just playing themselves out in different ways before us. You said you grew up in Hong Kong, I don't know if your grandparents were of Chinese origin or Japanese but they probably tried to follow their dream to a different country before you. You are just completing the circle Cara. I'm now 69 years old, I'm in a wheelchair but I still look forward to seeing other parts of Japan I have yet to see. I still have dreams. Cara you are just starting your journey, I hope it is a good one. Good luck.

Linda, what a beautiful message you have written me! I was close to tears as I read the end of the message! Guess what? I am still in Japan.. and have in fact signed the contract to stay for another year! It was really, really tough when I posted this video.. Burying myself in tears, doubts, and regrets day after day really didn't feel great. But what you wrote above is exactly what I need(ed) to hear. The hindsight you have, knowing that no matter what path we end up choosing will have ups and downs along the way, is exactly what I needed to feel assured that my decision to come to Japan wasn't a wrong one. Your story is so inspiring! Really shows how windy life can be but how magical it also is at the same time. I guess forty years ago you would have had similar thoughts like mine? I'm still slightly confused about what I want to do after leaving Japan (that said, I don't even want to leave Japan!!), and when my Dad asks, it still worries me. I somehow know that wherever I end up I will be happy, but having no clue what future is going to be like is quite scary! And you're right, my grandparents moved from mainland China to Hong Kong when they were young for better opportunities. Following your dreams is tough! But without dreams, what are we? I can't wait to find out where I will, location and life-wise, in 5, 10, 20 years from now. Thank you for watching this video, Linda! Please take care, and stay in touch!

I’ve applied for JET 3 times, and this week will be my second attempt at the interview, and might I say I give you many kudos. I was all for it the first time I applied, but looking back I don’t think I would have lasted long if I got in right out of college. I was much more well versed in work life than my peers, but none of that prepared me for working life out of college. I ended up having your experiences in Milwaukee, WI, over 12 hours drive away from home, which was a daunting task, but not nearly as daunting as it could have been. The only saving grace was the fact that I had the means to go home if I needed to - a 12 hour drive could still be achieved, or a $200 plane ticket. While I won’t tell my family lest they fret, I’ve reminded myself a few times that I can’t just come home if I need to during this. I plan to set aside enough money for an emergency, round trip plane ticket, but I won’t have the luxury of knowing I can come back easily if I’m needed, or if I need them. I thought of this last year, and it convinced me to stop my application altogether (I don’t include it in my 3 attempts). When I thought about it this year, though, I realized life was not without its risks, and that at the end of the day I’ll endure. Nonetheless, this reminded me of that reality, and I give you many kudos for enduring like you did this time 3 years ago. I hope that wherever you are now, you’re in a good place and doing everything you wanted to do.

As someone who's currently doing teaching abroad, this is just great. The living abroad blues are no joke, so it's good to know that there are other people going through the same things. The letter you wrote looked like a pretty constructive way to deal with it, I might have to write one myself! Thank you for posting this video, your sincerity is refreshing. Happy birthday and all the best.

Hey there! Writing my feelings out actually really helped me straighten out my thoughts. In fact, it forced me to think and not escape the blues that I was feeling, so I'd really really recommend you to do that! Are you teaching in Japan also? I hope you all the best as well! Hang in there!!

Cara, If you are still in Japan, and haven't thrown in the towel yet, I want to tell you I listened to the letter you wrote to yourself when you were really down. That letter reminded me of myself when I came to Japan over forty years ago, from Seattle, Washington. It has been hard at times but I am still here can you believe that anyone would chose to stay here, but I did, because it took time to know the Japanese people, and I am still learning. All over Japan you will find groups of what or who I call the "old timers", most of us have met and married Japanese men and had children and have made Japan Home. Have you heard the saying "Home is where the heart is"? Well it is true if you have the people you love around you, you can live almost anywhere. If you have anymore blue periods in Japan just write me and I'll answer you. One thing you should be proud of is you made it through one year in Japan, now you can live all most anywhere in this world. Take care. Linda-Day-Sakamoto

This was really inspiring. I'm a current JET applicant (interview was last week) and while I'd heard a lot about culture shock and rural loneliness blues, this was the first time it had ever been made to seem so real. Depression on JET is not a joke, and you really have to be strong and proactive to make it through. I'm glad you're doing much better now. If I ever find myself feeling the same way, I'll think back to this video as a reminder that as long as you don't give up, and keep looking to the future, you can survive anything.

Hey! Thank you so much for your comment :) It's really not easy to move to a new country where you can barely speak the language! A lot of ALTs have adjustment problems in the beginning but things will eventually get better. Good luck with the JET application and let me know how you went in the interview! When you're in Japan, just know that things WILL go south but you gotta stay strong!!!! Seek any help that you can. I got your back! :)

Thank you for the support! :D My interview was so much less stressful than I expected - everyone at the Embassy, from the former JETs organising everyone to the interviewers themselves was so kind and supportive. I got the feeling that they really wanted us all to do our very best. The interview was a really chill experience, and I think (hope!) I showed them all that they were looking for. Fingers crossed that I'll be able to pass on the same kind of support and energy as you this time next year...

I have been working as a researcher in rural India for a couple of months now. I live alone in a small town, away from home, and started getting the blues much sooner than I expected. Monsoon turned into something I loved back home to something I dreaded here. I have not been having a great time at work either and keep binge watching KZfaq videos when I am at my flat, and being really unproductive. Your letter really gave me some hope. Because of what you went through is somewhat similar, your positive outtake really started making sense to me and I have been trying to follow the vows you made myself. I do not know whether it's been working but at least I see some hope where I couldn't in the beginning. Thank you for this. Good luck with your new job and have a great time in Japan. Lots of love.

Hey Cara! First off I'd like to wish you an early happy birthday! My name is Josh Benner and I am beginning the first semester of my junior year (university) tomorrow morning. It is currently 12:19am and I visited KZfaq for something relaxing to watch before heading to bed. As you have probably experienced in the past, college is an insane roller-coaster that constantly has you questioning your motivation, dreams, and what you want to do in life -- that's at least how it has unfolded for myself. This video of yours, specifically, has left me completely and utterly inspired to say the least. This video has reminded me to own my decisions, whether negative or positive, and be proud of myself when I accomplish something. I loved hearing about your perspective of how your life differs from your friends -- how they are all becoming doctors, lawyers, accountants, etc while you're in Japan experiencing something truly amazing. I am a Pre- Physician Assistant student and I have been studying Japanese for 5 years now. I have been contemplating doing the JET program after graduating in the fall 2018 before applying to PA school. But, I often hit a road block (comparing my temporary halt in career, doing the JET program, while my friends are all progressing). Your video has made me realize that this is my life and I should do whatever makes me happy. I am sure the JET program will throw many challenges my way when I decide to apply and I feel very confident thanks to your many stories and reflection of your own experiences. Anyway, I hope my rambling was too terribly boring for ya. I really needed to hear all of this and I thank you so much for your videos. I'm sure you'll hear from me in more comments to come haha Take care!
@Caradventures
@Caradventures 7 жыл бұрын
Joshua Benner hey Josh! I love reading comments from my subscribers cos I feel really connected to you guys so don't even worry about boring me cos you didn't! Haha That pressure of being "behind your peers" is huge and is also somewhat detrimental because why should our lives be determined by what the society wants us to do? Look, you are only in your early 20's and will be working for the next 40 or so years so what is 1 or 2 years spent in soul searching going to hurt? Nothing; this gap time off will only enrich yourself internally and actually allow you to live life before you need to dedicate completely to your career. It took my parents quite a while to accept that I'm not going straight into my career (Asian parents, alas!!) but eventually they began to understand and let me chase after my dream. It's really not easy when you're the only dreamer among your peer group, but please know that there are other like-minded people in the world, and that you should stand firm for what you really want to do! Try to have the hindsight that the you years later will have; he would probably be telling you to jump at every opportunity so that you don't regret! :) Good luck with college and I hope you apply to JET! Know that if you do, I'm here to support you through the process :) take care!

I was just upgraded to the short list for JET last week and I leave for Japan sometime in September. Having very little time to prepare has made me very anxious and worried, and I'm afraid of those feelings overtaking my excitement. Wow hi! Thanks for the speedy reply :) I've spent a good part of the day watching some of your other videos and the ups and downs you've experienced in Japan have definitely made me even more excited! I'm so happy I found your channel! I get the feeling that I'll have to rewatch them when I actually get to Japan to keep those lessons you learned in mind. One of my favorite things you mentioned to not lose sight of yourself is to keep your personal hobbies while adding Japanese hobbies. I think that could really make a place feel like a home rather than a place to visit. And yes, I did go to UCLA! Graduated in 2015 :) Nice to see a fellow Bruin on JET!

That said, definitely reach out to the local community and see how you can get more involved with the locals, cos afterall we came to experience the Japanese way of life, right? :D Good luck! And I hope we'll get to meet each other in person :D (and perhaps do an 8-clap? Hehe!)

Definitely!! Most other blogs I've read said that you have to completely immerse yourself in the culture and try not to go back to any home country comforts... but I feel like that would be uncomfortable after a while. I don't want to feel bad for watching some Disney movies in English every once in a while :P yes! We will definitely have to meet up for an 8-clap! :)

I am a fresh graduate and I understand about how hard it feels to transition from being a college student to an adult. It is tough, and still tough until now. I barely make a living on my own, even though I graduated from a national university with good reputation, and have a good GPA score as well. Now that I'm in this condition, I'm planning on teaching in Japan as an ALT to improve my quality of life. The anxiety and the "blues" will still be there, but I believe that it will be better than my current situation. That alone gives me some strength. I'm now fixated in my decision. I hope that I can be fully prrpared to teach there next year. Thanks for always giving us valuable information about living and working in Japan. You don't know how much that helps someone like me. Also, I wish you the best of luck in life.

I hope you get on board with JET one day and will be able to experience what I'm able to! It doesn't come without effort, so when you're here, please try your best to make the most out of it!

Thank you so much for this amazing video, Cara. My name is Alejandra and I'm here in Budapest, Hungary for a semester abroad in my junior year, which has been my dream since beginning college. I've battled with moderate depression throughout my college years and it relapsed while I've been here; I spent many days in my room not eating, crying, cooped up and in bed. I've had a really hard time pulling through my studies, and everything has seemed rather pointless, but your inspiring words put my mind back on the right track - appreciating what's right here in front of me while I still can. Obviously we have to take it one little step at a time, but it's good to know we have that shared experience and that we're not alone. I hope you're in a better place now, and may I say you're absolutely beautiful! :) I know the people who need to hear it most never hear it, and I just wanted you to know that.

As a guy that has lived most of my life in the rural norwegian countryside, I can sort of relate to the feeling of suddenly going from being surrounded by many people to suddenly living mostly by myself without alot of people around. Although it was the opposite way for me, going from living mostly alone to suddenly being stuck in a norwegian military-bootcamp surrounded by hundreds of other recruits 24/7. A change like that can be a bit difficult in the start, but as time goes one gets used to it. After some time the new way of living becomes normal, although in some cases it can take alot of time. Since your now living kind of rural(I think?) I would suggest finding some walking trails or roads, where you can enjoy nature for what it is around where you live. This will help you connect more with the new place your living. Best wishes, stay strong!
@Caradventures

Hey there! Loved this new perspective/suggestion! Where I am is indeed quite rural and there are many many trails nearby. I love the nature and have been hiking a few times. Right now though, it's started snowing so I have only been snowboarding in the past few weeks!!! Definitely trying to appreciate what is around to feel more connected with this town.Rural Norway sounds soo cool!!!!! I hope I get the chance to visit there one day in the near future :) Hope you're doing fine too with adjusting to the bootcamp--it's no easy transition. Best wishes to you too, and happy to talk more about the acculturation experiences!
@Marper8
@Marper8 7 жыл бұрын
Hey, good to hear you got some hiking and snowboarding options availiable! I've only been snowboarding once, and lets just say I'm happy I didn't die..haha but I've used downhill-skis a few times and it's very fun, but since you have to purchase a card to use the ski resort and you also have to pay some money just to enter the area with a car, it's quite expensive here. Rural Norway is very beautiful! I live on the east side, so there are not alot of fjords and the views aren't as spectacular as on they are on the west coast, but we have a lot of forest and I actually prefer it that way since it has a special beauty that most people walk straight past, but if you do take some time to look around you'll learn to love it. I'm am actually done with bootcamp, we have one year manditory military service in Norway, so I was done a half a year ago. I found that I was a bit down the first two months, but as the the third, fouth and fifth month passed I got more used to the new way of living. And by the end of the year I was totaly accustomed to it. And one more thing about acculturation is that when I was younger my family moved to the US where we lived for two years. We moved to the state of Nebraska, which perhaps is not the most popular state to move to. But we did, and it was hard for me to acculturate. I was so used to spending up to 12 hours a day playing outside in the forest with friends building treehouses and fighting with sticks, that when I moved to Nebraska which is in the middle of the prairie it was very hard for me. Most of the kids my age in Nebraska spent all their time playing computer games, which I had almost never done during my life. But as time passed I slowly got more used to it. Although after two years it still was a bit difficult for me to completly fit in. So in that case the prossess took alot of time and after two whole years it was still a bit difficult. But I feel as though I have learnt alot from that experience that I wouldn't have learnt otherwise. Like that you can still be happy although things aren't always like you want them to be. The same situation can be both horrible and also very good, it all depends on what you are thinking on the inside, staying positive and always being able to recognize the blessings in ones own life is very important. So the circumstances don't make you happy, but you yourself make you happy. You can have very bad circumstances and still be happy, and you can have very good circumstances and still be sad. It's whats on the inside that counts. Sorry for my rambling, this suddenly got a bit long, but I hope it helps.. Take care!

marcpopkema omg what an inspirational read! (I really enjoyed reading about your childhood spent playing in the forest and building tree houses... sounds like a movie to me!!!!!!!! I grew up in Hong Kong so there were only concrete buildings and busy streets and massive shopping malls in my childhood... no greens at all :( ) Thanks for sharing your acculturation experiences! Those times must've been hard on you.. but I'm glad you adjusted well in the end :D I've definitely begun to feel better on the inside but physically adjusting to the place is another thing. I loooooove you saying that it's the attitude, not circumstance, that makes oneself happy. It can't be more true! I gotta keep my positivity running so that life doesn't bog me down. Thanks for your comment mate! I hope you stay connected with my channel too :)

Yeah I had a good childhood :) I'm glad your feeling better on the inside, but yeah physically adjusting is just going to take a bit longer. Especially when your now living in a place where they speak a language which sometimes might be a bit difficult to understand.. but it's just going to get better with time. I'll definitely stay connected with your channel, I find your videos very interesting!

I'm hoping to hear back from JET about going to Japan this July, and I know I'll be looking at this video again. Probably multiple times as a reminder. You're very strong. The words you wrote to yourself spoke to me even now as I face a new adventure with excitement but also some trepidation. I think a lot of your words are universal to anyone, anytime, anywhere. "The day you begin to think that things look ordinary to you will be the day you lose curiosity about your surroundings." I really like this and I think it is good to be reminded of it.

Happy to hear that my video is helpful for life in general :) Not going to lie, but I myself have watched this a few times just cos I forget the things I want myself to do/meaning of being in Japan as well. We're in this together, and I really hope that you get into JET!!! Would be really cool to see what your experience here is like as well. Good luck and stay connected!

Thank you for sharing this. It was very emotional and something that I needed to hear. Because sometimes, even as I live in my same life right now, I have to remind myself of all the accomplishments I have done so far when I'm feeling sad and unsuccessful and moving at a slower speed than most of my peers I went to school with. Also, happy birthday! :) I hope you have an amazing one and keep on being strong!

Hey Natasha! I'm glad you found this video helpful. That feeling of being "behind our peers" is so self-debilitating and it honestly shouldn't even bother us so much because there would be no such thing as "being more/less successful" if we weren't comparing ourselves to others. If we only focus on our life and what we truly want to set out to do, I promise you that we'd feel so much better because then we would be giving the best we have, and know the value of ourselves, irreplaceable by others. Of course, other people have their strengths and they may very well be "smarter" than us, but that's okay--respect others for what they're good at, but know that what YOU are good at as well. I'm still learning that and trying to be stronger with what I have. So good luck Natashia, with this soul-searching journey! Life can so easily bog us down, but we can show it our resilience. Ganbatte ne!

Happy birthday Cara! I was actually planning to apply as an Assistant Language Teacher in Japan and it's been my second day watching vlogs on how it is to be teaching and living in a foreign land miles away from home (by the way I'm from the Philippines). Your vlog has been so far the most honest ones that I have watched and I kind of like it. Happiest of birthday's to you cara! Your videos are truly inspiring and insightful in so many ways - as I wish to move abroad to japan to not only make a difference in my life and truly define who I am, and my place in the world but also to be a significant impact on those around me. I hope that your future brings you much success in finding your place in Japan, your Japan home, and that when in doubt always remember this video and your own mission that you set out to do. You have the energy to keep achieving more so than you already have (which is so much!). Your videos are not only truly inspirational, but also have helped me define some aspects as was doubting in my own abilities to start my life in Japan in the near future. Hope that you birthday is spectacular, and that the future remains brighter than ever!

Hey Ashley! Thank you for your comment--how it just happened that you're watching this video when you needed it too! I feel like there is always going to be an imbalance between what the society expects of us and what we really want to do... I posted this video three months ago but I sometimes still struggle about the same thing haha. You've worked a long way to become a doctor so it's a long to "give up" if you apply to the JET... BUT I'd also think that BECAUSE you have the qualifications to be a doctor, you won't be losing anything by applying to JET, right? After all JET isn't a permanent job so you could still go back to being a doctor if you want to afterwards? Ah, I'm not sure how the medical path works, but I'd hate to see you bury JET away especially when that dream of yours has been buried for 2+ years now. In my opinion, you could always try applying: if you get the interview, then great go for it; if not, at least you've tried! Living without regrets is my motto for life haha!! And this program is all about sharing so here you go for a copy of the letter! You can now read it anywhere and anytime you like :) :) Good luck with your endeavours!!! Cara any time you feel down contact me. I can make you laugh with all the things I've been through. By the way you are worried about the friends you left behind getting more settled than you. But I found out a funny thing. Recently, I've been in touch with some of the friends I went to High School, and University with, and when I was your age I worried about the same thing, them getting on with their career choses, but what I found out was while I was wondering about them they were envious of me. So take care that you too are getting on with your life and doing something interesting, that they are envious of you for doing. Good for you signing on for one more year. You won't regret it.

A lot of my friends have actually said the same thing to me... Especially the ones going to be doctors and lawyers (the ones that I'm most "envious" about? Because they seem settled already?). @Caradventures
@Caradventures 7 жыл бұрын
Hey there! So there's around 20 JETs in my area and I honestly don't see alllll of them all that often. I'm close to maybe 3-4 of them and we hang out every now and then. I see all of the 20 JETs at monthly meetings but for the ones that I'm close to, I'd say 3-4 times a week? Some of us also take Japanese lessons together so we're closer. Now that I think about it I actually see the JETs quite often haha... but maybe it's the fact that I live alone that leads to all those feelings of loneliness! Hope this helps :)

Yeah! At first I didn't have a preference for where I want to be placed now I think a city would be better than a rural area because I'd rather be around people... Also how crazy is the indoor insects situation? I'm nervous about that haha
@Caradventures
@Caradventures 7 жыл бұрын
Ah, actually though, I've heard stories from my Tokyo JET friends that they don't hang out with each other that much... Like, yea there are many people there but at the same time people can also be very distant, if you get what I mean! But yea you're quite on your own in the countryside hahaha, a very different way of life! I haven't encountered that many bad indoor insects situations tbh. There were more flies and little insects in summer but if I can deal with it (think about a typical Hong Kong city girl), you should be able to deal with it too!!!! (just get a fly swatter and insect spray and you'll be fine!)

Great! Sorry for so many questions! Is it easy to make conversation or friendships with the locals? -Japanese neighbors or teachers? Can JETs have family visit and stay with them and/or can JETs go on vacation during holiday to their home country?
@Caradventures
@Caradventures 7 жыл бұрын
Haha no worries--shoot any questions my way! For your first question, I really gotta say it depends. I'm very lucky to have met three local Japanese friends that are super outgoing and open to meet foreigners so that helped me a lot! I also learn a lot of Japanese from hanging out with them. My Japanese teachers are also really really friendly so I talk to them quite a bit. Never be scared to joke with them! Once you start joking with them you guys become best friends instantly hahahaha at least with my young teachers it worked! and YES, of course JETs can have friends/family stay with them in their place. JETs also have 20 paid leave days per year so you can go on vacation pretty much anytime you like. (need to get permission from school, but it's not difficult) hope this answers your questions!
