You don't need forced air with your high pressure gas regulator. A venturi works great, the flame shouldn't be burning inside your tube, it will eat away at it pretty quickly.

I am thinking that they should have used a flame trap just inside the mouth of the burner tube to allow for complete air/fuel mixing and to prevent combustion inside the burner tube.

With forced air, the temperature will rise. Venturi designs can only go so hot. I think that's the "Extreme" part in "Make It Extreme"....

It's still a rather poor design. Even if forced air is needed to attain a desire temp range there are better designs.

Absolutely right, you can use a tube with a higher melting point but the end result is the same, a slagged burner head. If you do it right the venturi process should give you a perfect air-fuel mix, self cool the majority of the burner head, less downtime in replacing parts, and very close to the same temps as the jet burner in the video. You will need to bypass the gas regulator to do this however. I would suggest a thermal safety cuttoff valve as well, no one wants an explosion. You should never ever have part of your flame burning inside the tube. It should be burning just outside the tube so the heat is used in the foundry. Need to seriously fix that. JMHO

Well budy you made an awesome torch and I am sure it can reach temps up to 900-1000 C but I Wouldn't really suggest the combustion inside the tube cauze due to intense heat the tube is gonna start weakening until it probably will fall out. (Sorry for bad english, I am from Greece but I wont all the audince to get what I am saying) rather than that an amazing video keep going with the good work.

i have seen a few propane torch builds this is the first one that uses a welding tip for the propane injector nozzle great idea.

A couple of other torch builds have used mig tips, it is certainly easier to get an accurately sized hole that way rather than to drill one. The smallest bit I had was 1 mm and mig tips go down below that, 0.9 0.8. I ended up drilling a series of stepped holes into the plug to reduce how far I had to drill with the 1 mm bit, which are easy to snap.

in my experience there is something quite wrong when the flame burns inside the burner pipe instead of just outside it. I suggest adding a flare section when not sticking the burner inside the forge.

Mate, a cylindrical bushing in the end of the burner tube, into which a circular bit of fine stainless steel mesh is inserted will stop flash back in the burner tube. Should get you more bang for your buck... So to speak.

Hm. A bit of searching on teh interwebs shows that I was perhaps over-reacting - www.sperkoengineering.com/html/articles/WeldingGalvanized.pdf claims that ill-effects of zinc (oxide) fumes are only temporary..

Trying to be positive here... the actual presentation of the video was pretty darn good. With regard to the burner.... a huge amount of unnecessary work, resulting in a flame that is heating the burner mixing tube? Some are right in saying forced air is not required but when it is running correctly you should achieve a more efficient heat. This is an old video, so I’m wondering if there was an amended and improved version??

Hi, I guess someone has already written this in the comments, because you can see it as soon as you light the flame. The diffuser (reinforced tube at the end) is too long, shorten by 2/3 and you get the hottest part of the flame. Hi

Awesome! I was wondering why are there two/three adjustment knobs (one of them being at the bottle, obviously)? I just got my self a torch and got a gas bottle that only turns on or off , no nuance of adjustment, so the only adjustment can happen at the handle of the torch - but I'm unable to get the proper jet engine blue flame style, only flame. Any idea? Cheers!

end result is great. 0.6mm mig tips are ideal, very complicated though, you are lucky it worked so well,mine is much simpler but took a dozen tries to get it right. cheers

research research. Ron Reil is the man with all the knowledge. there are many ways to build a burner,just depends on what resources are available. In Tasmania you can't bloody buy anything so i used an assortment of bits and pieces.you will need a decent LPG regulator, apart from that a bit of trial and error will find a solution for you. Never use galvanised pipe, a flared end is superior. simple or complex really depends on your fabrication skills, design depends on end use e.g. foundry, forge,heating, cooking ? A foundry burner does not need as much control as a forge or cooking burner. the tricky bit is getting the gas orifice central in the burner tube and getting the air/gas mix right. Look at a few other builds and copy what suits your needs and skills best. Hope this helps. Cheers

How does the outer sleeve of the torch section hold up after repeated use? I noticed that it got pretty yellow, which I know can make it pretty brittle after even a few heat/cool cycles...

I think it would get brittle if it were quenched or rapidly cooled, and the 'brittle' factor may depend on the alloy he used, I didn't catch that, the alloy he uses may be (probably was chosen to be) ideal for the application.

2 questions: 1: What was the ideal air/fuel ratio? 2: Is the teflon tape good enough for that much heat?

1: No idea, depends on how much oxygen is currently in the air, the humidity, and the elevation you are at. 2: Depends on the depth of the threads. If you have really deep groves, go with the pink Teflon tape. If you are using plastic, and the threads aren't that deep, use white. Yellow is the middle density of the two. I have heard that yellow can sustain at a slightly higher temperature. But if you are threading tape on something that is going to get hot, I think you setup might be incorrect. Only use teflon tape for pressurized line. I've seen people put tape on their 'burner nozzles' that have giant holes in them to let oxygen in, but they have the threads covered with tape. xD Yes I know it's been 6 years. This comment wasn't meant for just Brian. It's meant for all to see.

Yes need a combustion chamber. Fuel air mix threw smaller pipe into a bell keeps flame at end not in the middle. Gonna melt that pipe

The 30 degree angle of the air supply tube seems irrelevant because the round hole drilled into the tube diverts the direction of flow. If the hole was reamed or cut out to be oblong to port match the shape of the angled hole at pipe end, then the air flow direction be undisturbed.

I want to build some of this stuff... You are the DIY man that Ive always wanted to be! I wish you'd give the items that youd need to do this stuff! Like what was the size of that welder tip you took? .030, .035 or even a .023? A lot of this stuff looks like it could just be bought at Homedepot!

I don't think you can get a MIG tip in 0.023", they USUALLY come in 0.035" and 0.030" in the US.

When welding galvanized metal you should grind the pieces were you are going to weld as one it is no good to breathe the galvanized metal and two it contaminates the weld.

Why not use a propane regulator instead of restrictor nozzle ? Are there benefits to doing this ? Also using shop air, that's going to need a lot of CFMs, is that really the most efficient way ? And that combustion chamber , why not let the combustion happen around the crucible ?

the video is fantastic but you made a small mistake the flame lights too internally instead should turn almost towards the end of the tube you should reduce the length of your pipe or increase the nozzle

Yep, that pipe will be done for after 3 - 4 burns, bulged out or blown right through the side.

how big a compressor do you need to continually feed a burner like that ? allso i read a lot of the comments about the pipe getting red hot , i wonder if you can just shorten the pipe a little passed the point where it goes hot and just stick it deeper intoo the forge

watahyahknow a small compressor should be enough, doesnt take a lot of air to burn like that, some people use a hair dryer but remove it when not blowing or the heat will travel back up the pipe and melt it!

Near the end of the video, you added brass fittings to the end of the pipe on to which you screwed the steel weld flange. Why? Why not just put the flange on the end of the pipe? Was it just for added length?
