TIMESTAMPS:
0:00 - Jet Set Radio (2000)
17:18 - Jet Set Radio Future (2002)
29:11 - Shape Da Future
Jet Set Radio was a brilliant, boundary-pushing, but short-lived franchise for SEGA in the early 2000s, and everything about these games is rooted in that era. From its funky, incredible music and genre-defining visuals to its fast-paced, but rough around its edges gameplay. Jet Set Radio and its sequel Jet Set Radio Future were influential games that have gained a cult following in recent years, but with 20 years without a new JSR game, many creatives who were influenced by Jet Set Radio and JSRF have taken matters into their own hands, creating games like the uipcoming Bomb Rush Cyberfunk. Join me today as we discuss this series, its history, and its legacy, and its impact - both on the people who made it and on the people who played it. Thanks so much for watching, and if you liked this video consider subscribing to the channel. More videos coming soon :)
QUICK CORRECTION:
Electric Toothbrush was composed by Toronto, not Hideki Naganuma. Apologies for this editing error!

BRC is what brought me to this wonderful video. I loved JSR so much and BRC just improves on what I loved 10-fold. From the characters to the story to the old people, it just has so much life and joy that I missed from my days playing JSR. (Maybe possibly probably you could make a video on it wink wink nudge nudge)

Toronto composed "Electric Tooth Brush" not Hideki lol. Really cool that you used "Just Got Wicked" during Grind City footage, since it seems like no one likes to use the more "licensed" songs while talking about these games, I understand why however. Having played both games, I love them very much and now with BRC being released I'm glad that the series has inspired numerous projects; regardless how I might feel about some, it's just nice to see. Very much aware about the JSR leak that happened in April and I don't have any strong feelings on it since it was nothing more but used in an investor video with Sonic Frontiers and P3R. Good video man.

You DAMN RIGHT IT DESERVES TO BE REMEMBERED!!! Heck it deserves a re-release. Both games on one disc, cart or whatever. I loved the soundtrack and I remember when our friend would visit and bring his DC and the games. Now I see what Bomb Rush Cyberfunk was recommended as a "spiritual successor".

I play this game a couple of times with each year that passes by. I still have my original Dreamcast copy, but I usually play the versions on PS3 or my Vita. The music really made this game as the cherry on top! I just remember picking Combo for the first time, and when his introduction came in with the Rob Zombie while grinding on the train tracks…Man!!! This game definitely shows it’s age at certain areas, but if you have mastered it overtime then nothing will stop you from accomplishing this masterpiece. !!!SEGA!!!

I enjoyed this video so much. Jet set radio future is my favourite game of all time. The setting, the music, the characters! I have so many fond memories from childhood of playing the multiplayer with my sisters too. (4 player games were mandatory in our house haha) The artstyle still influences me to this day, the colour palette is so gorgeous. I played Bombrush Cyberfunk and thoroughly enjoyed it but it definitely gave me the hankering for JSRF again, time to whip out the old xbox. This video great and well put together and you have a great voice for video essays, clear and good pace . Keep up the good work 💪💪

The New York or Grind City maps are the weakest parts of the first game, but also the most rewarding after finding the right routes to keep your momentum going. I overall prefer the tight and arcadey original over Future, despite some bad choices and limitations that Future and the HD remasters fixed Looking forward to JSR 3. And hopefully it includes a port of Ollie King, haven't played it in ages

I yearn for a modernized version of Jet Set Radio. I once saw a Jet Set Radio graffiti mural, featuring Beat, Gum, Yo-yo, at my local train station. Sadly, it was recently replaced on the early summer, and didn't get to take a picture of it (even though I would frequent that train station daily for school). I did find a picture of the mural online, but it's half finished. The Dreamcast era is home to many underrated cult classics.

I wouldn't go as afar as saying the bosses were bad, if anything, most games had that time had limitations really and most of the games actual bosses were equally 'bad' when you look at them on a 2023 scope vision. I remember them being really hard in my times just because the mechanics were frustrating rather than boring 'wait your turn'.

Amazing video, can't wait to play Bombrush Cyberfunk on my PS5 on September 1st, I heard it's practically JSR 3, so I'm beyond hyped. This video does the game's justice and as a decade long fan at this point, glad more people seem to remember the series. While the issues you mentioned especially with the first don't bother me, I can't deny some of the game's issues even if they don't bother me and JSRF is like a near perfect game for me.. I say near perfect because Fortified Residential Zone is genuinely a god awful level.

I loved it regardless and for me it was pretty perfect. It has become one of my favorite games I've played since getting back into gaming in the last five years. I believe it's a pretty worthy spiritual successor and would be interested to see how Team Reptile might improve and build upon the core gamplay aspects in a sequel. Giving Sonic a break would be really bad for the series actually, it makes fans lose interest and it is a really bad play in general, considering nowadays mainline 3D games are taking around 5 years to release, and they fulfil these years with tons of spin-offs, I think they should keep doing that and release tons of spin-offs beetween the mainline games and keep releasing the mainline games themselves SEGA has tons of studios inside the company, Sonic games can still be developed simultaneously, and if you know about the news, you know SEGA is bringing back some old IPs including JSR

23:30 there is a little workaround with having no wavepoints, characters like Corn and Gum often remind you where to head off to in each Chapter when you choose to converse with them, that and you'll often have DJ K or one of the antagonists have dialogue that's relevant to your objective when you load in the map that progresses the story. There's a few instances where this doesn't happen but I've never ran into that issue in my first time playing. Regarding difficulty though, the game is a little too easy and I'm fine with that, makes the player feel like they have a ton of power and I think that really pays off with games in this micro-genre of 3d platformer-skating games. The added edge with the intense and incredibly cool soundtrack with music like "Fly Like A Butterfly", "Shape Da Future", "I'm Not A Model", "Me Likey The Poom Poom" and "Grace and Glory (B.B Rights Michael Harrison mix)" also allows for a ton of flair in mission objectives. I'd rather a very fun and enjoyable 7-10 hours of experience than the nightmare of achieving Jet rank on Fight or Flight in the original Jet Set Radio, that level gets joked on a lot but the SEVEN tries of Jet ranking that level will really do a number on any player lol
